What is Quran And why it was revealed: Quran is described by Allah Himself as: O mankind! There has come to you an instruction from your Lord, a cure for whatever (disease) is in your heart, a guidance and a blessing for the true believers, Say: It is the grace and mercy of Allah (that He has sent this Quran), so let the people rejoice over it, for it is better than (the worldly riches) they are accumulating). [Quran,Yunus 10-57,58] Quran has basically four attributes a) For continuous recitation (From the Arabic word Qira) b) Distinguishes between Right and Wrong (Al-Furqan) c) It describes laws, do s and don ts (Al-Kitab) d) It is for remembrance, reminder, pondering and reflection (Liz-Zikri) 1

Basic facts about Quran: 2 1) Quran is a revealed knowledge (Knowledge obtained through divine source, that is Allah, the creator of the whole universe sending his guidance, knowledge through his messenger Muhammad (SAW). 2) The Holy Quran is revealed in Arabic so the Quran is only the Arabic Text, not its translation in any other language. 3) Quran is literally the words of Allah as dictated to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by Angel Gabriel (Jibreel). 4) It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) over the period of 23 years. 5) It has 114 Surahs (chapters). 6) Quran touches upon all aspects of human existence, including matters of doctrine, social organization and legislation. 7) Quran is a gift and blessing of Allah to humanity, it provides us with a belief and value system that is valid for all times. Since Quran is Allah s words, He himself describes different virtues of Quran. We will attempt to list some of them direct from Quran, so we understand what Quran is? And why it was revealed as the final testament? Quran is Allah s words: Declare: Even if all human beings and Jinns combined there to produce the like of this Quran, they would never

3 be able to compose the like thereof, even if they backed up each other. [Q17/88]. Why they do not reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from any other than Allah, they would have found within it many contradictions. [Q5/82]. This is revealed by extremely loving and caring Allah. [Q41/2]. Alif Lam Ra. This book, whose verses are perfected and issued in detail by the One Who, is All-Wise, Al-Aware. [Q11/1-2]. Prophet! Recite what has been revealed to you from the Book of your Rabb: no one is authorized to change His Words [if anybody dares] will find no refuge to protect himself from Him. [Q17-27]. This Quran is not brought down by the shaitans (devils). [As was asserted by the disbelievers. Rather, it was brought by Gabriel, the Trustworthy spirit] [Q26/210]. And O Muhammad (SAW), most surely you are receiving this Quran from the One Who is wise and All-Knowing [Q27/6]. If you are in doubt concerning that which We have sent (Quran) to Our slave (Muhammad, SAW), then produce one Surah (chapter) like this; and call your witnesses (gods that you call upon) besides Allah to assist you, if you are right in claim. But if you are unable to do so, and you can never do so, then fear the Hell fire, whose fuel is men and stones which is prepared for the unbelievers. [Q 2/23-24]. This Book (Quran) is- no doubt revealed by the Rabb of the worlds, or they say He (prophet) invented it? Rather, it is the truth from your Rabb. [Q 32/2-3].

And when We substitute a verse in place of a verse- and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down- they say, You, [O Muhammad], are but an inventor. But most of them do not know. Say, the pure spirit (Jibreel) has brought it down from your Lord.[Q 16/101 102]. This Quran is revealed by the Almighty, the Merciful [Q 36/5]. Surely We have revealed this (Quran) in the night of Qadr. [Q97/1]. We have not sent any messenger before you, but were men, whom We revealed Our Message. You (O people of Mecca), may ask those who have the Reminder (the people of the Book), if you do not know the facts yourselves. [Q16/42]. Quran is guidance: This is the book about which there is no doubt, guidance for those conscious of Allah (those who have piety, righteousness, fear and love of Allah, willing slavery to Him, thankful to Allah and are not selfish). [Q 2/2]. O mankind! There has come to you an instruction from your Rabb, a cure for whatever (disease) is in your heart, guidance and a blessing for the true believers. [Q10/57]. This is a book which We have revealed to you, (O Muhammad SAW), that you might bring mankind out of darkness into light by permission of their Lord- to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy- [Q14/1]. Quran is a guide and good news for the believers. [Q27/2]. Do the people say: He (Muhammad SAW) invented it? Rather it is the truth from your Rabb, so that you may 4

5 warn a people to whom no Warner has come before you: so they may be guided. [Q32/3]. Those to whom knowledge has been given can see that the revelation sent down to you from your Rabb is the truth and it guides to the way of Almighty, the Praise- Worthy.[Q34/6]. And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command (i.e., the Quran). You did not know what is the Book or what is faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And surely you are guiding mankind to the straight path.[q42/52]. By Quran Allah guides those who pursue His pleasure to the way of peace (freedom from all evil) and bring them out from darknesses into the light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path. [Q5/16]. He sent a Messenger reciting to you the distinct verses of Allah that He may bring out those who believe and do righteous deeds from darkness into the light. [Q65/11]. Allah has revealed the most beautiful message, a book (Quran) consistent in its verses yet, repeating its teaching in different ways. Those who fear their Rabb are filled with awe when they hear it; then, their skins and their hearts become pliant to the remembrance of Allah. Such is the guidance of Allah: He guides with it whom He pleases. But whom He lets go astray shall have none to guide him. [Q39/23]. This Quran is enlightenment for mankind and guidance and mercy for a people who are true believer. [Q45/20]. Surely, We have revealed to you the Book with the truth, for the instruction of Mankind. So whoever is guided- it is for his own good; and who goes astray shall do so at his

own peril. You are not set up as a guardian over them. [Q39/41]. This Quran is the true guidance. As for those who deny the revelations of their Rabb, there will be a terribly painful punishment. [Q45/11]. Quran is a clear Message: That s how (through His commandments) Allah makes His Revelations clear to you so that you may understand. [Q2/242]. These are verses of the Quran, the Book that makes the things clear.[q27/1]. We have already sent down to you revelations giving you clear guidance and cited examples of those people who passed away before you and admonition for the righteous. [Q24/34]. In this Quran We have used different methods to make the people understand the Message, yet, the majority of them persists in unbelief. [Q17/89]. And We did not give him (i.e., Prophet Muhammad SAW) knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting for him, It is not but a message and a clear Quran. [Q36/69]. O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book ( i.e., the Quran). [Q 5/15]. He is the One Who has revealed to you the Book. Some of its verses are precise/decisive- they are the foundation of the Book (the Quran). [Q 3/7]. 6

Praise be to Allah Who has revealed the Book to His slave and made it free from any crookedness/deviance. [Q18/1]. Quran is for believers: And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad (SAW)-and it is the truth from their Rabb- He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition. [Q 47/2]. Those to whom We have given the Book and who read it as it ought to be read, they are the ones who believe in it; as for those who reject it, they are for sure the losers. [Q2/121]. Only those believe in Our revelations who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Rabb, and they are not arrogant. [Q32/15]. Those who have believed and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort. (Note: The best remembrance of Allah is to read His words i.e., Quran and ponder over it) [Q 13/28]. Say, The Holy Spirit (Jibreel) has brought it down piecemeal with truth from your Rabb to strengthen the faith of the believers, and to give guidance and good news to Muslims. [Q16/102]. 7

Quran is mercy: We have sent down Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for the believer, while to wrongdoers it adds nothing but loss. [Q17/82]. And indeed, it is guidance and mercy for the believers. [Q27/77]. And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book (i.e., the Quran) which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe. [Q 29/51]. This (Quran) is enlightenment for mankind and guidance and mercy for a people who are certain in faith. [Q45/20]. Quran is protected: Surely, We have revealed this reminder (the Quran) ;and surely We will surely preserve it Ourself. [Q 15/9]. No falsehood can approach it from before or from behind. It is a revelation from the One Who is Wise and Praiseworthy. [Q41/42]. This is indeed an Honorable Quran, inscribed in a wellguarded Book, which none can touch except the purified (angels); a revelation from the Rabb of all the nations [Q 56/77-80]. Allah abrogates and confirms what He pleases-with Him is the Master copy of the Book (the Quran).[Q 13/39]. Quran is in Arabic: We have revealed this Quran in the Arabic language so that you may understand.[q12/2]. 8

We have not sent any Messenger except that he spoke the language of his own people, so that he could explain to them clearly. [Q14/4]. We have made the Quran easy in your own language so that you may give good news to the righteous and warn the hostile people.[q19/97]. Thus We sent down the Quran in Arabic and clearly proclaimed in it some of the warnings so that they may take heed or that it may serve as a reminder to them. [Q20/113]. Quran is a revelation from the Rabb of the all nations in a plain Arabic language. [Q26/192-195]. This Quran is revealed in Arabic, which is free from any crookedness (any deviance from truth), so that they may learn to be righteous. [Q 39/28]. Allah revealed a Book whose verses are well explained, a Quran in Arabic language for people who understand. [Q41/3]. Thus We have revealed to you this Quran in Arabic, so that you may warn the residents of the Mother city (Mecca) and its suburbs, and forewarn them of the Day of assembly about which there is no doubt: when some will go to paradise and others to the blazing fire. [Q42/7]. We have revealed this Quran in the Arabic language so that you may understand its meaning. [Q43/3]. Quran confirms previous scriptures: Believe in My revelations (O children of Israel), which are confirming your scriptures; do not be the first one to deny My revelations, and do not sell them for a petty price, fear Me and Me alone. [Q 2/41]. 9

He has revealed to you (Prophet Muhammad SAW) this book with the Truth, confirming the scriptures which preceded it, as He revealed the Tawrat (Torah) and Injeel (Gospel). [Q3/3}. And We have revealed to you, the Book (i.e., the Quran) in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. [Q5/48]. This Quran is not such as could be produced by anyone other than Allah; in fact, it is the confirmation of prior revelations (Torah, Psalms and Gospel) and fully explains the Holy Book; there is no doubt in this fact that it is revealed from the Rabb of the all nations.[q 10/37]. They (group of Jinns) said O our people! We have just listened to a Book that has been revealed after Musa (Moses), confirming that which came before it and a guidance to the truth and to the right path. [Q 46/30]. Quran as a preacher: Admonish with this (the Quran), those who have the fear of being assembled before their Rabb in such a manner that there will be no one to protect them or intercede on their behalf other than Him. It may be that, (by this admonition) they may become righteous. [Q6/51]. This Book is reveled to you; let there be no discomfort in your heart about it, so that you may thereby warn (the unbelievers) and remind the believers.[q 7/2]. I (Prophet) (have been commanded by Allah) to recite the Quran. Now whoever follows this guidance will be guided for his own good, and to him who goes astray, say: I am merely one of the warners. [Q27/92]. Let no one turn you away from the revelations of Allah now that they have been revealed to you. Invite people to 10

your Rabb. And never be of those who associate others with Allah. [Q28/87]. We know very well what they (unbeliever) say. You are not there to compel them to believe. So remind them by Quran who fears My warning. [Q50/45]. Quran is easy to Remember: We have indeed made the Quran easy to understand and remember, so is there anyone to remember? Note: The Holy Quran is revealed in Arabic so the Quran is only the Arabic Text, not its translation in any other language. We all agree that any translation of the Quran can never be equal to or to be the replacement of the original, therefore no translation including in this booklet can be designated as the Quran. But translation is one of the avenues available to us to share this priceless gift of Almighty Allah. 11
