First Sunday of Lent February 18, 2018 Lenten Music at Blessed Sacrament 2018 Beginning on Ash Wednesday, we will be omitting the opening and closing hymns at all Masses. Instead, the ministers will process in silence. Once they reach the steps to the altar, all will be asked to kneel. A bell will be rung three times, and the Kyrie (Missalette p6) will be sung. There is no Gloria during Lent, and in place of the Alleluia verse we will sing Praise and Honor to You, Lord Jesus Christ. At the end of Mass, the Marian antiphon for the Lenten season, Ave, Regina coelorum, will be chanted and the ministers will exit in silence. The text and translation of the Ave, Regina coelorum are provided below. Ave, Regina caelorum, Ave, Domina Angelorum: Salve, radix, salve, porta Ex qua mundo lux est orta: Gaude, Virgo gloriosa, Super omnes speciosa, Vale, o valde decora, Et pro nobis Christum exora. St. Vincent de Paul Society The next meeting of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be held on Monday, February 19th, at 6:00 PM, in the basement of the rectory. Lenten Services & Information Stations of the Cross (each Friday during Lent) 1:30 PM & Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament 6:30 PM (no Benediction) Lenten Reconciliation Service Saturday, March 17th at 10:00 AM Our Lady Queen of Peace Stations of the Cross Thursdays at 6:00 PM Fridays at 6:30 PM (Spanish) Lenten Reconciliation Service Wednesday, March 7th at 6:00 PM (Bilingual) Prayer ~ Fasting ~ Almsgiving Prayer: Throughout Scripture, Jesus goes to pray in deserted place. Lent is our "deserted place." We draw near to God through Mass, confession, and spiritual practices like the Stations of the Cross, but we are also invited to spend time in prayer alone with the Father like Jesus did. Fasting: Fasting is not a diet! With a diet, we try to achieve a physical goal in this world. In fasting, we try to achieve a spiritual goal in the next. Fasting helps us to sacrifice our preferences and less-than-healthy impulses to build discipline to choose the good in all areas of life. 3 Almsgiving: Time and time again, the Bible tells us that to love God we must love others. Our "neighbor" is someone we might not expect. Giving alms is an opportunity to support and care for our neighbor in need.
