AN URGENT APPEAL TO LUTHERAN CHURCHES (LCMS) A member of Grace Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Oak Creek, WI, Joy Lussier, is currently on the list to receive a kidney transplant as soon as a suitable donor is located. Joy has been advised by her physician that, in addition to the active searches being done by the National Kidney Donor Registry through St. Luke s Hospital in Milwaukee, she should attempt to recruit a kidney donor as soon as possible. None of her family members has been determined to be a suitable donor for her. The doctor suggests that she get in touch with as many people as she can, to see if they might consider being tested as potential donor candidates. She recognizes that this is not something entered into lightly, but after a great deal of prayer she is making this request of others in the Lutheran community. A recent news story told of two area judges, one of whom needed a kidney transplant. The other judge heard of the need, felt compelled to be tested, and subsequently donated a kidney to her colleague. There is also a transfer program whereby a qualified transplant donor may donate to a third individual who in turn may have a qualified donor for the first person needing a kidney. One man in need of a transplant advertised for a donor on a billboard, and another walked with a sign at Disney World in Florida each recruited a donor in that manner. While these exciting stories are not common, they do point out the sacrifice people are willing to make for a fellow human being, and how both reap the rewards. We are asking everyone to keep Joy in their prayers, and, if you are so moved, to consider being tested for potential kidney donation. Also, we would appreciate it if you would talk to your own family members, friends and neighbors to see if they might consider this testing, or passing this request on to other organizations with which you are associated. For more information on how to proceed, please contact: Jeffrey Klister RN, BSN Living Kidney Donor Coordinator/pair exchange coordinator St. Luke s Hospital Milwaukee, WI (414) 646-0584 Please keep Joy in your prayers for her as we seek to learn God s will.
