Your Financial Stewardship For the week ended Nov. 9, 2014 This week we continue our November focus, before the rush of the holidays, to lift our stewardship efforts of the parish, both in prayer and giving. Prayer opens the heart to the possibilities and desires that God has in mind for all of us. It helps remove blocks in the areas of heart that resist the invitation and can increase our willingness to be sacrificial. I would encourage you to begin using the little prayer card that we passed out last week. They are still available in the Narthex if you missed it. These little guides to prayer can help place our souls in the right frame of mind with God, especially when we are discerning choices and paths in any the area of our life. The card also helps to make sure our prayers are well rounded. In regards to our offertory aspect of the campaign, we are travelling down two parallel paths. One is the continued great response of all of us to SCRIP. We are so grateful. The other is our personal and family gifting. In regards to SCRIP, I hope you are tracking the numbers in the bulletin to see how your efforts of taking the time to purchase SCRIP (which can be tough) are really making a difference! If we continue to grow this and spread it over the fiscal year, this will be a HUGE help. The second path of gifting is the one that traverses through our budgets. Very difficult. If we are able to make a modest increase in our gifts to the work of the Church, we really do have the potential to smooth out the fiscal situation of the parish and balance revenue with expenses. So thank you for any considerations you are making. Have you wondered why the gifts of bread and wine are brought up with our financial gifts? I recently read this: Our financial gifts are most appropriately presented at the Offertory of the Mass because the celebration of Christ s sacrificial offering is a fitting context for our own sacrificial offering which is a grateful response to the unfathomable love God has shown for us. Too often, we want to separate the issue of giving, particularly the giving of money, from those more spiritual aspects of our faith life. Yet, the commitment to Sacrificial Giving of financial resources is one of the most important expressions of what our faith means to us. Offering our monetary gifts at Mass places them in an appropriate context of payer and response to God. In the offering, we can express our gratitude in having received and in being able to give. We are able to say, Thanks be to God! Weekly Joyful Giving Envelopes... $ 23,992.00 Offertory Collection...... $ 1,302.00 Budgeted Weekly Joyful Giving $22,660 Last Week s Scrip Totals Week of 10/06/14--10/12/14 Parish Sales: $ 7,015.00 Parish Profits: $ 310.08 School Sales: $51,951.00 School Profits $1,635.83 In the Mass we can give back some portion of the gifts that God has allowed to be given to us, and join it to the most important offering of the Eucharist, the gift of Christ s death and resurrection. We join our offerings to Christ s offerings, and they are made acceptable and holy. This context also helps remind us that our offering is personal as well as a communal offering and prayer. The Mass is an ideal place where this truth is fully experienced. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
