Preparing to Write: Being an Urban Planner Urban planners who studied Pompeii asked themselves several questions that could apply to cities and towns in the United States today: Are there public spaces where people can gather? Do the buildings serve the needs of the people who live and work in them? Do the buildings look as though they belong together? Is it convenient for people and vehicles to move around the city? Think of two more questions that would help you determine whether you would find a city livable. Example: Are there playgrounds and sports facilities for young people? 1.
