Confirmation 2018-2019 Information & Registration Packet St. Paul Catholic Church 1201 Satre Street Eugene, Oregon 98401 www.saintpaulparish.com (541)686-2345

Dear Parish Families, Welcome to the St. Paul Confirmation program! We are excited to journey with your family and teen toward the Sacrament of Confirmation. In this registration packet you will find all the information you need about the Confirmation program at St. Paul. This is truly a special time of spiritual formation for your teen; one that we hope will strengthen your entire family. In the Catholic Church, we know that the Sacrament of Confirmation is given to the baptized in order to more perfectly bind the Candidates to God through his Holy Church. Through this sacrament, your child will be enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit to be a true witness of Christ. Confirmation is not a graduation from Religious Education or faith, but rather a beginning to being fully brought into the church. Therefore, the preparation for receiving this Sacrament cannot be simply a class your child must attend to receive knowledge. Instead, this is a period of time for them to deepen their faith and ask God for the Grace to live it out in a more real way. The youth who fully enter into this process of ongoing conversion have the opportunity to encounter Christ and become his disciples. Confirmation preparation at St. Paul has several components to enhance and enrich their experience of faith throughout the year. We will again utilize the Matthew Kelly Confirmation Decision Point series for our curriculum. In addition, we will have a team building retreat, and emphasizing service to church and community. This way the Candidates are able to take what they are learning in the sessions and through discipleship and evangelization are able to reach a better understanding of what Love God & Neighbor really means. All candidates are required to attend ALL confirmation sessions, become involved in a parish ministry and most importantly attend Mass every Sunday. We also recognize that you, as parents are the first and most important teachers of your children in matters of faith and morals-therefore we have opportunities for parent involvement in our program as well. All parents are asked to commit to leading their child into a deeper faith relationship by attending Mass with your child, engage them in their journey and perhaps volunteer in our program. Please know that we are praying for you and your child as they enter into this journey of preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. In Christ, Fr. David Brown, Caitlin Breitenst and Gordon Okumu

2018-2019 CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS 1. Prayer and Fellowship And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose and went out to a lonely place, and there he (Jesus) prayed. Mark 1:35 God uses us when we take a break from our everyday lives and distractions to communicate with and reveal Himself to us. We are hoping a our whole and small group sessions will help the Candidates enter into their preparation more deeply, encounter Christ in a new way and bond with each other through activities, prayer, and talks. We will have an extended first meeting to build our community. 2. Sessions And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to breaking of bread and the prayers. -Acts 2:42 Each of the 12 regular sessions will take place from 12:00-2:30 (Lunch will be provided and we will need families to sign up for pot luck style); Sessions begin on September 9 th and conclude in April 28 th. See attached program dates. Candidates will receive a book and will need to bring it to class every class day. We have Bibles here, but they may bring their own from home if they wish. 3. Service- So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead -James: 2-17 Serving in a ministry: i) All confirmation candidates are required to actively participate in church activities on selected Sundays. These activities including but not limited to: a. Alter serving b. Usher c. Greeter d. Lector e. Faith formation for K-5 f. Sacramental prep classes volunteering. Your parish needs you! A minimum of 8 hours is required for parish service. ii) Finding a charitable organization in our community to serve at for at least one shift. 4. Patron Saint- Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witness, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance that race is set before us. -Hebrews 12:1 All Candidates will be asked to spend some time thinking and praying about a saint to choose as their patron saint for life. Confirmation saints should be a person they want to be like that teaches them something about how to live as a Christian. These saints then become someone who prays for them from heaven for the rest of their lives. You should desire to be like your saint! 5. Letter to Bishop- Each Candidate is required to present a well-written, typed letter explaining what Confirmation means to them personally and why they wish to be confirmed. The purpose of this letter is to help clarify what is happening in their faith journey. We will send letters to the office of Bishop Peter Smith in March. Candidates will learn more about this during the classes and as their journey progresses. Due by Sunday, February 25, 2018.
