LIFE OF CHRIST from the gospel of Mark Lesson 25 Jesus heals a deaf man Mark 7:31-37 37 Created for use with young, unchurched learners Adaptable for all ages including adults Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark

Jesus Heals a Deaf Man Mark 7:31-37 Younger Verse Older Verse Lesson Goals Opener They were completely amazed and said, Everything he does is good! Mark 7:37 They were completely amazed and said, Everything he does is good! He even heals people who cannot hear or talk. Mark 7:37 Learn that Jesus healed a man who could not hear or speak Understand that everything Jesus does is good Learn that we can trust Jesus to work good in our lives When God made the world, He said it was good. In fact, everything that God does is good! Today we will learn about something good Jesus did for someone who needed help. Bible Story Please note: This portion of the lesson is given to help in teaching the lesson. Please read through the story and read it in the Bible. Do NOT read from this piece of paper. Instead, make a note sheet and place it next to the story in the Bible. Last week we learned about when Jesus went to visit the city of Tyre. A woman came to see Jesus because her daughter had an evil spirit inside of her body. Jesus sent the demon out because the Mom believed that Jesus had the power to do it. After spending time with this woman, Jesus left Tyre and went toward the Sea of Galilee. He was going to spend some time in an area called Decapolis, which means Ten Towns. We ve heard about this area before. Jesus had removed evil spirits from a man there. Then Jesus had that man go and tell everyone in the town about how Jesus helped him. When Jesus arrived in the area, many people had gathered around Him. Why do you think they came to see Jesus? Maybe they wanted to hear about God s love, maybe they wanted Jesus to heal them, or maybe they had heard about Him and were curious. A few of the people there had a specific reason for wanting to see Jesus. They had a friend that they really cared about. This man was different because he was deaf and mute. Does anyone know what that means? It means he could not hear or talk. The man s friends came up to Jesus and begged and pleaded for Jesus to put His hands on the deaf and mute man. They wanted Jesus to heal their friend so that he could speak and hear. Jesus took the man away from the big crowd of people. Well, guess what happened next? Jesus took His fingers and put them inside of the man s ears. Then Jesus spit and touched the man s tongue. Hmm, this was different from the other ways we have heard about Jesus healing people. Next, Jesus looked up to Heaven and said, Ephphatha! That means, Be opened! Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark 2

Immediately, the man s ears were opened and the man was able to speak just like you and me! We have read and learned about many people that Jesus healed. Each time He did it, it was amazing because that person s life was changed forever, along with the friends that had brought him to see Jesus. Jesus told the people not to tell anyone what had happened. But the more He told them not to tell anyone, the more they did tell. The people were amazed that Jesus could heal the man. They spoke to each other about Jesus, saying, He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak! The people were right about Jesus. Everything He does IS good! The Bible says that every good and perfect gift comes from God (James 1:17). God wants to do good things with our lives. He can even work good out of something that we think is difficult (Romans 8:28). The key is to trust Him and obey His commands. Like the man obeyed Jesus and went with Him, we need to obey Jesus and go with Him wherever He leads us! Jesus came to earth to heal us of our sin-sickness. All people have done wrong things, called sin. So we all need God s forgiveness. God wants to forgive us and be our friend. Jesus died on a cross to make this possible. Just believe that Jesus died on the cross and rose again. Invite Him into your heart. God will forgive your sin and give you a new life! Review Questions 1. Where did Jesus go after He healed the woman s daughter? (Decapolis, or Ten Towns) 2. Who did the people bring to Jesus? (a man who was deaf and mute) 3. Where did Jesus take the man? (away from the crowd) 4. How did Jesus heal the man? (He placed His fingers in the man s ears; He spit and touched the man s tongue) Prayer Time Praise God for His power to heal us from our sin. Pray for those who do not have Jesus in their lives. Sometimes Jesus told the people to share what He had done, but other times, like this one, He did not. Jesus wanted people to understand how much He loved them, not just to be entertained by Him. It is important for us not to treat Jesus like a TV. We watch the TV to be entertained. Then we turn it off when we are done. Many people would follow Jesus just to see what He would do next. Jesus wants to have a relationship with us. He wants to be our best friend. He wanted to be our friend so much that He died on a cross and came back to life. Life Application Planning for Lesson 26 Jesus Feeds Another Large Crowd Mark 8:1-10 Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark 3

Preschool Lesson for Jesus Heals a Deaf Man (Wave to the children and motion to them that you cannot talk. As they talk to you or ask you questions, play along with them for a little bit as if you cannot speak. Watch to see how they respond to you.) Hey children! My voice is actually just fine today. But in our story, we are going to learn about a man who could not speak or hear. Jesus had come to visit an area called Ten Towns. Jesus had been to this area before. He had healed a man with evil spirits here. Once Jesus arrived in this area, everybody wanted to come and see Him. Why do you think they wanted to see Him? Maybe they wanted to be healed because they were sick? Maybe they wanted to hear Jesus speak about God? Pretty soon there was a huge crowd of people all around. A few people had a special reason for coming to Jesus that day. They had a friend that they wanted Jesus to help. Their friend was different from them in two ways. He could not hear, and he could hardly speak. So how do you think the man communicated with other people? Maybe he used sign language. Jesus took the man away from the crowd. Jesus placed His fingers into the man s ears. Then He spit and touched the man s tongue! He looked up to Heaven and with a deep sigh, said, Ephphatha! (That means, Be opened! ) What do you think happened? Immediately, the man was able to hear and speak. Jesus healed him! We have learned about many different people that Jesus healed. Their lives were different forever because they had met Jesus. Jesus told the man and his friends not to tell anyone, but they did. They were so amazed at what Jesus had done, they wanted to tell anyone that was around them! They said to each other, He does everything well. He even helps people to hear and to speak. These friends cared for the man so much that they wanted him to see Jesus. We, too, can help our friends to know Jesus. We can bring them to Bible Study, pray with them, or share with them what we have learned. Jesus can change us just like He changed the man in our story. He died on the cross and came back to life three days later. He died to take away our sins. The change He makes in us is that the sins in our heart are completely washed away if we ask Him to forgive us. Once Jesus is in your heart, He is your best friend forever. If you would like to ask Jesus into your heart, please talk with me before you leave. Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark 4

Hands-on Activities for Jesus Heals a Deaf Man Practice sign language. Help them to learn how to spell their name and/or learn the memory verse in sign language. Play charades. Have children act out an animal or an activity without speaking or making any noise. Play the quiet game. See who can be the quietest. Encourage the children to give thanks and praise to God whenever they recover from being ill. Bring a CD player with head phones. Have one child listen to the song and have them show the other children the motions. Let the children try to guess what song they are listening to. If you do not have a CD with the songs, whisper a song into the child s ear to perform without singing. Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark 5
