2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.1 His Status (2:6a) 2 Who, being in very nature God,

John 1:1-5,14 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5 4 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Colossians 1:15-20 15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:15-20

2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.2 He Submits to the Father (2:5-6)... did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage rather, he made himself nothing

2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.1 He Submits to the Father (2:5-6) {He} did not consider equality with God rather, something to be used»to his own advantage [WHAT: ACTION] [WHAT: STATE] [WHAT: ACTION] [HOW] 1 he {did} make himself [WHAT: ACTION] nothing [WHAT: STATE]

2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.2 He Serves Others (2:7) He made himself nothing, by taking the very natureof a servant, being made in human likeness.

2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.2 He Serves Others (2:7) 1 [HOW] He made himself nothing, [WHAT: STATE] by taking the very nature»of a servant, being made [WHAT: ACTION]»in human likeness. [WHAT: STATE] [WHAT: ACTION] [WHAT: ACTION] [WHAT: STATE]

2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.3 He Sacrifices for Others (2:8) And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross!

2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.3 He Sacrifices for Others (2:8) And being found in appearance 1 as a man, [WHAT: ACTION] he humbled himself {further!} [HOW] by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross!

The Sacrifice of Christ Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us for it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree Galatians 3:13 - quoting Deuteronomy 21:23 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Mark 15:34 quoting Psalm 22:1

Psalm 22:11-18 "Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And Thou dost lay me in the dust of death. 16 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.

2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.4 He Show s God s Glory (2:9-11) Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

2.3 The Example of Christ 2.3.4 He Show s God s Glory (2:9-11) Therefore {submits, serves, sacrifices) [WHERE] [WHAT] [WHERE] God exalted him to the highest place and {God} gave him the name [WHO, WHAT, WHOM] that is above every name,

2.3 The Example of Christ [WHY] 2.3.4 He Show s God s Glory (2:9-11) that at the name of Jesus every knee should [WHAT] bow, [WHAT]»in heaven»and on earth»and under the earth, and every tongue [WHAT] acknowledge [WHAT]»that Jesus Christ [WHY] [WHOM] [WHO] [WHERE] is Lord, [WHAT].

2.4 The Example of Paul 2.4.1 A Purpose to Achieve (2:12,14-16) 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

2.4 The Example of Paul C 2.4.1 A Purpose to Achieve (2:12,14-16) Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling [HOW] [HOW] [WHERE] [WHERE]

2.4 The Example of Paul C [WHY] 2.4.1 A Purpose to Achieve (2:12,14-16) Do everything without grumbling or arguing, [WHAT: ACTION] [WHAT: ACTION] so that you may become Blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation

2.4 The Example of Paul P C 2.4.1 A Purpose to Achieve (2:12,14-16) Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ [WHAT: STATE] [WHEN] that I did not run in vain that I did not labor in vain [HOW] [WHAT: ACTION] [WHAT: ACTION] [WHAT: ACTION]

2.4 The Example of Paul 2.4.2 A Power to Receive (2:12-13) Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in you [WHY] To will and To act [HOW] [HOW] [WHAT: ACTION] [WHAT: ACTION] in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Work Out Your Salvation Is Paul saying we need to work FOR our Salvation? For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not of works, so that not one may boast. Eph 2:8,9

Work Out Your Salvation Is Paul saying we need to work FOR our Sanctification? If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self- made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh. Colossians 2:20-23

Work Out Your Salvation What does Paul mean then by the word work? To mine gold from a mine To till a field that will produce a crop He who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:8-9

With Fear and Trembling Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling Psalm 2:11 Live your Christian life with a seriousness that reflects A recognition that God s glory will either be reflected or diminished by your actions. Matt 5:16 A recognition that you will one day give an account for the stewardship that God has entrusted you with. Romans 14:12,13 Matthew 15:14-30

2.4 The Example of Paul 2.4.3 A Promise to Believe (2:17-18) 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

2.4 The Example of Paul 2.4.3 A Promise to Believe (2:17-18) But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service [WHAT: ACTION] [WHAT: ACTION] coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. [WHAT: ACTION]

2.5 The Example of Timothy 2.5.1 He had a servants heart (2:19-21) 9 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

2.5 The Example of Timothy 2.5.1 He had a servant s training (2:22) 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.

2.5 The Example of Timothy 2.5.1 He had a servant s reward (2:23) 22 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. 24 And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon.

2.6 The Example of Ephaphroditus 2.6.1 He was a balanced Christian (2:25) 25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co- worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.

2.6 The Example of Ephaphroditus 2.6.1 He was a balanced Christian (2:25) But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother (the fellowship of the gospel) co- worker (the furtherance of the gospel) fellow soldier (the faith of the gospel) who is also your messenger (servant), whom you sent to take care of my needs.

2.6 The Example of Ephaphroditus 2.6.2 He was a burdened Christian (2:26-27;30) 26 For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.

2.6 The Example of Ephaphroditus 2.6.3 He was a blessed Christian (2:28-29) 8 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him,
