The dstncton between a regular devl and one who s merely devlsh s exactly the dstncton between the professonal and the amateur n all occupatons. The devlsh do thngs purely for the eclat of the dong, whle the devls do them because they want the thngs done. A professonal carpenter n order that he may have a table, to be used for hs varyng ends: an amateur uses hs tools merely for the sake of the chps That an occasonalamateur dsplays unusual brllancy n the accomplshment has nothng to do wth the dstncton. The real devls, moreover, regard the devlsh purely wth a mld amusement, f they regard them at all. Ther ony vexaton s that o f professonal craftsmen of the "pn-money- " workers, whose spasmodc efforts cut nto legtmate trade. The most powerful proof whch can brng to the statement that Furnss was a real devl, however, s the one that he dd not regard hmself as a devl at all. On the contrary, he regarded hmself as an ndustrous ctzen, farly successful n the accomplshments of hs ends. As a career, devlshness dd not nterest hm n the slghtest. ts materal rewards were all that he sought. Now, at mdnght, on the thrteth of October, Furnss, wth the best ntentons n the world, was standng n a group n the ball-rooof the Ftchly Country Club, harmlessly sngng "Auld Lang Syne." At one mnute past CURTSS twelve the engneer turned out all tne ngnrs, navng standng n--. structons to do so, for Ftchlv was a goodly town, and on ths partcular nght the steward had forgotten to make an excepton. The result was that whch usually occurs when the lghts are turned out on a perfectly respectable and usually sane gatherng of grown men and women every bt of asnnty n the mob swarmed to cat-callthe surface. There were s, screams, and suggestve labals, whle all the naturally executve began gropng toward the door and the steward. What the others dd, however, dd not matter. t was generally understood that they were merely devlsh, and no score was to be counted aganst them. Furnss, on the other hand, played everythng for stakes, and hs tally had to meet wth a reckonng. For,, when the lghts left tber sudden wave of darkness on the mxed and rollckng group. Furnss quetly and modestly followed the promptngs o f hs professon, turned slowly, gathered the nearest wo man nto hs arms, and thorough-- y and delberately kssed her. Who she was he had not the slghtest dea, nor dd he, ndeed, have any very lvely curosty. The act was purely professonal, perfectly methodc, as automatc and unemotonal as a response n a rtual. Thus, despte Furnsss known make-uthe fact would have p, passed unnotced had t not been for two thngs, frst, that, owng to the delberateness of Furnss and the quckness of the engneer, the lghts went on agan before he was through, and the second that the woman thus dscovered n hs arms was the only one n the room whom he would have had the slghtest reason for wantng t o kss. t was a perfect trumph of crcumstantal evdence. THE GARDEN SLAND, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 63 t Forest Notes From furnshng materal for a canoe n whch to hunt whales some hundred odd years ago to supplyng Few England factores of today wth,000 cords of wood annually for shoe pegs and shanks s, accordng to the department of agrculture, only part of the servces the brch tree has rendered and s renderng the people of Amerca. Sr Alexander Mackenze, the department tells us n a bulletn just ssued on the uses of brch, hunted whales n a brch bark canoe. The anmals were found nt mouth of the Mackenze Rver. He faled to strke the game, and concluded that t was probably for the best. Whle the canoes are fral, t s ponted out that the bark of whch thev are made ressts decay longer than any other part of the tree. t would be dffcult, the department goes on to say, to estmate the value of the servc3 of the brch bark canoe n the dscovery, exploraton, development, and settlement of the northern part of ths contnent. From the Arctc Crcle to the Great Lakes, and southward, for a century and a half, that lght but exceedngly strong and servceable vessel threadee the lakes and rvers, bearng trade and carryng cvlazalon where no other boat could go. The French explorers and mssonares made journeys o f hundreds o f mles n these canoes, often carry-cargo- es whch would seem beyond the capacty of such fral vessels. The range of uses to whch brch wood s put s surprsngly large. Accordng to the department, the artcles nto whch t goes range from church pews to ktchen tables, and from organ ppes to newel posts. We may have our frst sleep n a brch crb and our last n a brch coffn. The spools on whch we get our cotton and slk thread are brch spools, and the lasts on whch our shoes are made are lkely to be brch lasts. The largest of the spools hold 2,000 yards, the smallest 20 yards. Tee woods beauty, strength, and rgdty make t promnent as a materal for muscal nstruments, and the same qualtes brng t nto extensve use for floorng. Many people have an dea that shoe pegs have nearly passed out of use, but the amount of brch prevously mentoned as made nto pegs and shanks yearly n New England seems to dsprove ths noton. Brch, the department says, s often put on the market n m taton of other woods, and we may open many a door, st on many a char, and wrte on many a desk whch we magne to be mahogany, but whch, s really brch staned to resemble the genune artcle. Nne speces of brch grow n the Unted States, but sweet, yellow, paper, and rver brch are those most used About 45,000,000 board feet of the wood fnds ts way to the market vearly. Paper brch s one of the few Amercan speces wth a hold on the "fjjrrnt stronger than t had when Amerca was dscovered.
