SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT FEBRUARY 25, 2018 WHATEVER YOU DID FOR ONE OF THESE LEAST B R O T H E R S O F M I N E YOU DID FOR ME M ATTHE W 2 5:40
FROM FATHER PHIL My Dear Parishioners and Visitors, The second Sunday of Lent provides for us the account of Jesus's Transfiguration. His disciples, Peter, James and John accompany him and are given the privilege of seeing Jesus in his true glory as the Son of God. The scene on that mountain, were Jesus was whiter than white, you could say they saw the Beatific Vision, which is something we speak of seeing when we are purified after death and see God, face to face. That vision did not last, but I am sure it kept their faith alive on cold nights. Lent is a time for us to see clearly. Connecting with the wonders of nature is the first manifestation of God. Taking time to see the stars or walking by the sea helps. We are also asked to purify ourselves through God's mercy that we might see one another differently, hopefully for who each and every human being really is as sons and daughters of God. Seeing with faith transforms who we are and has the potential for changing how we live, giving new vision. As our Lenten resolutions continue, I want you to think about giving to the beautiful work of Casa Juan Diego, a Catholic Worker House for those homeless and in a foreign land, and also to Christian Community Services Center, an ecumenical charity that we support along with over one hundred other houses of worship here in the Houston area. Let's make next Sunday awash with regular shampoo (15 oz.) for CCSC and large and extra-large adult diapers for the sick and injured in Casa Juan Diego. Bring them to our worship in the gym. This will be a sign of our solidarity with those who live close to us and we might usually not even see or be aware of. What a wonderful witness of love. In the words of St. Theresa of Calcutta, let's "Do something beautiful for God" by bringing to the altar signs of our love. With every good wish as we journey to Easter, Fr. Phil Lloyd Pastor
USCCB PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT, AND MIGRATION CHAIR ANNOUNCE NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY FOR DREAMERS FOR FEBRUARY 26 WASHINGTON Late last week, the Senate failed to achieve the 60 votes needed to move forward with debate on legislation to provide relief to Dreamers. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, USCCB President; Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, USCCB Vice President; and Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Migration, together issued the following statement: We are deeply disappointed that the Senate was not able to come together in a bipartisan manner to secure legislative protection for the Dreamers. With the March 5th deadline looming, we ask once again that Members of Congress show the leadership necessary to find a just and humane solution for these young people, who daily face mounting anxiety and uncertainty. We are also announcing a National Catholic Call-In Day to Protect Dreamers. This coming weekend, we will be asking the faithful across the nation to call their Members of Congress next Monday, February 26, to protect Dreamers from deportation, to provide them a path to citizenship, and to avoid any damage to existing protections for families and unaccompanied minors in the process. Our faith compels us to stand with the vulnerable, including our immigrant brothers and sisters. We have done so continually, but we must show our support and solidarity now in a special way. Now is the time for action. St. Theresa Early Childhood Center is growing and growing! STECC is now looking for a couple of loving and nurturing people who are willing to help us support the physical, cognitive, and emotional growth of our babies. All applicants must be willing to obtain CPR/1st Aid, and 24 hours of training in Early Childhood Development. We have part-time caregiver positions available! Contact Cindy Clements at c.clements@sttheresa.cc for more information.
LENTEN ACTION FOR DREAMERS: CONGRESSIONAL CALL-IN CAMPAIGN P lease participate in the Call-in Day to Congress on Monday, February 26, 2018! Your advocacy is critical to help the nearly 1.8 million Dreamers, young people who were brought into the United States by their parents as children. They may face deportation as soon as March 6, unless Congress reaches a bi-partisan deal to protect them. Please follow these easy steps to help: 1. Please call 855-589-5698 to reach the Capitol switchboard, and press 1 to connect to your Senators. Once you are connected to each Senator s office, please ask the person on the phone to deliver this simple message: I urge you to support a bipartisan, common-sense, and humane solution for Dreamers: Protect Dreamers from deportation and provide them with a path to citizenship. Reject proposals that undermine family immigration or protections for unaccompanied children. As a Catholic, I know that families are not chains, but a blessing to be protected. Act now to protect Dreamers, our immigrant brothers and sisters. 2. Please call 855-589-5698 a second time to reach the Capitol switchboard again, and press 2 to connect to your Representative. Once you are connected to the Representative s office, please ask the person on the phone to deliver the same message as above. After completing your call, please go to: http://www.justiceforimmigrants.org to learn more about Dreamers and find other ways to voice your support.
