Kindergarten WEEK 4 (Sept 23rd) Jesus will return (36.4) Bible Passage: Revelation 21-22 Main Point: Jesus is King over everything Key Passage : I am making all things new Revelations 21:5 Big Picture Question: What will happen when Jesus comes back? Jesus will make all things new. Leader Bible Study While he was a prisoner on the island of Patmos, the apostle John had an amazing vision of heaven. Jesus told John to write down everything he saw. John saw things that will happen when Jesus comes back to earth. In the final chapters of the Book of Revelation, John described a vision of heaven itself. He wrote about the beauty of the New City the New Jerusalem. The streets will be pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the city wall will be adorned with precious stones. The city will not need the sun or the moon because God s glory lights up the city. There will be no darkness, and nothing evil will ever come into the city. There will be no sadness, crying, or pain. Even though there will be no sun or moon, there will be no darkness because the glory of God will be its light. The Lord will reign forever and ever. What an amazing place heaven will be! Even with John s descriptions, we can t imagine exactly what it will be like when Jesus returns. Use this session to emphasize what we do know, using the unit big picture question and answer: What will happen when Jesus comes back? Jesus will make all things new. The promised return of Christ should fill believers with hope, strengthening them to persevere through the trials of this life and remain faithful to the Lord. When Christ returns, those who trust in Him will be with Him and enjoy Him forever. God will undo every bad thing caused by sin no more death, no more pain, no more tears. Christ s return should also give believers a sense of urgency to share the gospel with the world. It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes! (Rom. 1:16) Jesus is coming soon. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! BEFORE THE SERVICE: Be sure music is playing as kids arrive. Set out today s Activity Page and some crayons at the tables. Review the activities to make sure you re prepared for the day 1
WELCOME Greet children by name as they arrive, use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. As kids arrive, ask kids to share with you a time that a toy or other special item was broken. Say: It is sad when things break. It reminds us that the world we live in doesn t work the way it is supposed to. God created the world to be perfect, and sin messed it all up! Thankfully, things will not always be this way. 1. ACTIVITY PAGE: Undo matching Invite kids to complete the Undo Matching activity page. Instruct kids to draw lines to match the broken, sad, or painful things to their renewed and perfect state. Say: We have all experienced the brokenness of the world. People fight, toys break, and our bodies get injured. Because of sin, everything in our world eventually falls apart or dies. But that s not how God created it to be! Today we re going to hear a story about God s promise to make everything new again! 2. COLLECT THE OFFERING Pass around the offering bag or bucket to collect any offering for today. Say: Why do we give offerings? (Answer: To pass the blessings God has given us back to His church! Everything we have comes from God originally; we only have it because God has given it to us. Giving helps us show that we trust God to take care of us. Instead of worrying about how much money we have, we can give cheerfully to others and trust God to provide for our needs.) LARGE GROUP 1. MUSIC Invite kids to come stand on the carpet and get the worship DVD ready. Choose 3 or 4 songs to sing today. Say: It s time for large group, and first we re going to sing some fun songs together! Hand out instruments if you have them available or be prepared to lead hand motions. Right before you begin the songs, ask the children: Why do we sing to God? (Answer: To honor Him with our worship!) 2. LESSON When they are all seated, lead children to cross their legs and listen as you read the story or as they watch the bible story video. Say: In our Bible story, Jesus showed John something that will happen in the future. Jesus knows what will happen because Jesus is God s Son! 2
Jesus Will Return Revelation 21 22 John had a vision of heaven. He heard a large crowd of people praising God. John saw the things that will happen when Jesus comes back to earth, and he wrote about what he saw. John saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared. He also saw the Holy City, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. John heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, Look! God will live with His people. They will be His people, and He will be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more sadness, no more crying, and no more pain. These things are gone forever. John saw an angel come and carry him to a high mountain. The angel showed him the holy city of Jerusalem. The city was shining with God s glory. The foundations of the city wall had every type of jewel, and the city street was made of pure gold, as clear as glass. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it. The glory of God gives light to the city, and there is no darkness. The city is safe and clean; nothing unclean is in the city and no one will do wrong things in the city. Then the angel showed John the river of living water. It sparkled and flowed from God s throne. God s servants will see His face, and they will worship Him. The Lord will reign forever and ever. Jesus said, Listen, I am coming soon! I am the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Jesus is the One who says that all of these things will happen. He is coming soon. Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! Christ Connection: Jesus said that He is coming back soon. When Jesus comes back, everyone who trusts in Him will be with Him forever. God will undo every bad thing no more death, pain, or tears! Jesus is making all things new. 3. TALK ABOUT THE BIBLE STORY Say: There is a day coming when there will be no more crying and no more pain! Jesus will come back and make all things new. Jesus promised to come back soon and when He does, everyone who trusts in Him will be with Him forever. Point to the Bible story picture as you ask the following review questions: When will the things John saw in his vision happen? (when Jesus comes back to earth) Where will God live? (with His people) What city did the angel show John? (the Holy City, the New Jerusalem) What gives light to the city? (the glory of God) Who is coming soon? (Jesus) Who is going to make all of these things happen? (Jesus) 3
4. KEY PASSAGE Read the key passage aloud several times, then allow volunteers to say the verse from memory for the class. Encourage kids and thank them for their efforts. Make sure the kids that have the verse memorized get a picture taken for the big wall. Say: The words in our key passage are true. Jesus will come back and make all things new. Jesus promised He ll come back soon. Come, Lord Jesus! He who was seated (point to the sky) on the throne said: (make a crown on your head) Behold, I am making all things new (open and close hands) Revelations 21:5 (open hands like a book) 5. PRAYER REQUEST Say: Why do we pray? (Answer: To open our hearts to God and talk to Him!) Split the children in two groups if more than six. Guide the kids to sit in a circle. Start by discussing what prayer is and why it is important. Say: Prayer just means talking with God. Any time we tell God what we think, feel, want, or are confused about, we are praying. We can ask God for things we want, knowing that He will always do what is right. He may not always give us what we want, but He will always answer our prayers. When we pray with one another and for one another, it helps us stay focused on God and show our friendship and love for one another. God wants us to show friendship and love to one another. Let the kids ask questions about prayer. Then, allow the kids to share prayer requests that they may have. Take time to pray with the kids, lifting up their requests to God. BIBLE STORY ACTIVITIES 1. Make sun art Cover a table with a plastic tablecloth. Give each preschooler a coffee filter. Invite a preschooler to decorate her coffee filter with red, orange, and yellow markers. When she is finished, help her spray water on her art. Be careful not to oversaturate the filter. Point out how the colors spread to look like the sun. Set the filter aside to dry. Say: Today we are going to learn about a new city that is coming. This city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it. The glory of God gives light to the city, and there is no darkness. If we trust in Jesus, we will get to live in that city one day! We will learn more about that city in our Bible story. 2. Relay the message Form two groups to line up on opposite sides of the classroom. Choose the first child in line in one of the groups to run to the other group, and shout, Jesus will come back! The first child in the second group can then run to the other group, and shout, Jesus will make all things new! Allow play to continue until all children have had a chance to relay a message. 4
Say: John saw a vision of heaven and he wrote it down. We now read about John s vision in the Book of Revelation. We can share Jesus message with our friends and family. Let s practice now: What will happen when Jesus comes back? Jesus will make all things new! SNACK & PLAYTIME Go around and give each child a little bit of hand sanitizer to clean their hands, then give them each a graham cracker and small cup of water. Once snack is done, have a teacher lead the kids in the game while the other(s) can begin cleaning up the room and set out any take-home papers in the hallway where you or parents can get them easily at pick-up (coloring page, any craft and Big Picture Cards). 1. Play Play I Spy Inform preschoolers that you are going to pick an object in the room, and they have to guess what object you ve chosen. Give the children a clue by saying, I spy something [declare the color of the object]. Choose only items that are clearly visible to the children. Say: In our Bible story, Jesus gave John a vision. A vision is like a dream except you are awake! In this vision, there were many things that John saw and wrote down. We ll learn what John saw in our Bible study! DISMISSAL Greeter should stand just outside the classroom door with the attendance sheet, calling kids to come one at a time. Check that the parent and child tags match and collect them both at the door before allowing the child to leave. If parent lost their security tag, greeter should send parent to the check-in desk for approval (never allow a child to go to a parent unless they have the security tag). As children leave with their parents, remember to say: It was wonderful having you join us today! See you next week! and distribute the preschool lesson cards for families. 5
