The Word Became Flesh The Book of John Lesson 13 Triumphal Entry John 12:12-50 REFLECTION Review John 11:45-12:11. What did Mary s anointing of Jesus for burial in John 12:1-7 teach you about worshiping Christ? FOCUS VERSE Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain (John 12:24). SECTION 1 The Triumphal Entry Read John 12:12-21. 1. What did the multitude cry out and do in honor of Jesus as He entered Jerusalem (vs. 12, 13)? 2. How did Jesus come to Jerusalem (vs. 14)? LOOK DEEPER Find all the added information about Christ s Triumphal entry in Matthew 21:1-9, Mark 11:1-10, and Luke 19:29-40.

3. John recorded the prophecies from Psalm 118:26 and Zechariah 9:9 concerning the coming of the King that were written five hundred years before Jesus made His triumphal entry. Write them out and meditate on them (John 12:13, 15). vs. 13 1 vs. 15 2 3 4. When did the disciples understand and remember these prophecies 4 (John 12:16)? LOOK DEEPER How does John 14:25, 26 relate to this verse? PERSONAL Share a time when the Holy Spirit brought His Word to your remembrance? 5. Who were the four groups of people that attended the Passover 5 feast (John 12:17-21)? What was their response to Jesus? Group (vs. 17) Response Group (vs. 18) Response Group (vs. 19) 1 Hosanna! : save now, I pray thee! 2 Daughter of Zion: nation of Israel. 3 Zion: mountain that Jerusalem, the city of the King, sits on. 4 prophecies: God inspired words given to a man of God about the future. 5 Passover Feast: celebration of the Hebrew nation s deliverance from the slavery of Egypt; remembering the night when the Angel of Death killed every firstborn in Egypt, but passed over the homes whose doorposts were marked with the blood of a lamb. 2

Response Group (vs. 20, 21) Response SECTION 2 The Messiah Teaches Read John 12:20-36. This was the final week of Jesus life on earth. He was about to finish the work the Father had sent Him to do. 1. What did Philip and Andrew do with the request from the Greeks (vs. 22)? 2. How did Jesus respond to the question from the Greeks (vs. 23)? 6 Why do you think He answered in this way? 3. What are the teachings and promises Jesus gave regarding His soon approaching hour to die for the sins of the world (vs. 24-26)? PERSONAL How do these teachings apply to you as a follower of Christ? 6 glorified: Christ s death, resurrection and ascension. 3

LOOK DEEPER What does it mean to lose your life (John 12:25)? What does it mean to hate your life? Mark 8:34-37 Galatians 2:20 PERSONAL How can you practice these principles in your life? 4. How did Jesus express His emotional turmoil to His Father as His hour drew near (John 12:27, 28a)? Write out the Father s response (vs. 28b). I both it and will. 5. How did the people explain what they had heard (vs. 29)? 6. Why did Jesus say the voice had come (vs. 30)? 7. The time had come for God to judge the sin of the world and cast out its ruler Satan. What did Jesus say He would do when He was lifted up 7 (vs. 31-33)? 8. What two questions did the people ask Jesus (vs. 34)? 7 lifted up: Christ being lifted up on the cross to die for the sins of man. 4

9. Jesus answered their question with an exhortation and a warning regarding light and darkness. What is the exhortation (vs. 35, 36)? What do you see as a warning? What did Jesus do next? SECTION 3 Walk in the Light Read John 12:37-50. 1. What did Isaiah prophesy that was now coming to pass (vs. 37-41)? LOOK DEEPER Describe Isaiah s encounter with the LORD of Hosts 8 in Isaiah 6:1-10, when he received the prophesy in John 12:37-41? NOTE Israel s rejection of Christ their King as a nation was foretold in the Old Testament passages. This is spoken of in Romans 9-11. God is not finished with the Jew, their unbelief is for a season. This mystery gives the Gentiles opportunity to repent and come to faith. 2. Who did come to believe in Jesus (John 12:42, 43)? Why did they not confess Him openly and publicly? 8 LORD of Hosts: LORD of Armies; all, visible and invisible. 5
