H O P E Hope Lutheran Church Sunday, August 12, 2018 Jesus says that the bread he gives for the life of the world is his flesh, and whoever eats this bread has eternal life now and will be raised on the last day. In Ephesians Paul tells us what this life Jesus gives us looks like, this life we live as those marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit in baptism. We live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us. The whole purpose of life is giving yourself for the other. CALL TO CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Come, Holy Spirit, C: The wind of God, the breath of Life. P: Come, Holy Spirit, C: Our Advocate, our Counselor. P: Come, Holy Spirit, C: Teacher of Wisdom, Reminder of Christ. P: Come, Holy Spirit, C: Granter of forgiveness, giver of peace. P: Come, Holy Spirit. C: May we feel God breathing through our worship. May we receive the Holy Spirit in this place. Amen. P: Let us confess together: C: We confess to you, Renewing Spirit, that we confuse unity with uniformity, and diversity with divisiveness. We speak and behave as if being a part of your family means assimilating others to our way of living. We deny and destroy the beauty you created in each person. We long to change these patterns, O Creator, but we do not know how. Teach us to value challenge. Help us to see strength in difference. And empower us to build your kingdom in creativity and love. Amen. P: Hear the good news! God s Spirit has been poured out upon all flesh, and we have been made one by the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. We are no longer scattered or divided, but gathered together to build up God's Kingdom on this earth. C: Thanks be to God! 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY A: Let us pray... C: Gracious God, your blessed Son came down from heaven to be the true bread that gives life to the world. Give us this bread always, that he may live in us and we in him, and that, strengthened by this food, we may live as his body in the world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Be Seated FIRST READING: 1 Kings 19:4-8 NIV 4 while he himself went a day s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. I have had enough, LORD, he said. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors. 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, Get up and eat. 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you. 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. R: This is the word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. SECOND READING: Ephesians 4:25-5:2 NIV WORD 25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 In your anger do not sin : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. 5:1 Follow God s example, therefore, as 4

dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. R: This is the word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please Stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Open Our Eyes, Lord 5

GOSPEL: John 6:35, 41-51 NIV P: The Holy Gospel according to John, the 6th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 1 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. 42 They said, Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, I came down from heaven? 43 Stop grumbling among yourselves, Jesus answered. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: They will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. APOSTLE S CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE PRAYERS After each petition, the congregation responds with: C: Your mercy is great. LORD S PRAYER C: Our father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. SHARING OF THE PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you all. C: And also with you. The ministers and congregation greet one another in the name of the Lord. Be seated THANK OFFERING AND CHILDREN S MISSION COLLECTION The August children's coin collection will go to will be used to purchase specific needs for the teachers at Wenonah and Hale. 8

SENDING BLESSING P: May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created, breathe into you new life. C: God, create in us. P: May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin when the eternal Son came among us, make you joyful in the service of the Lord. C: Messiah, live in us. P: May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ. C: Holy Spirit, renew us. P: And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. C: Amen. 9
