Encouragement: 1 Thessalonians 5:11 GGCF Sermon, March 7th 2010 Leonard O Goenaga

Purpose: CENTRAL IDEA: Encouragement is a key to healthy families and Christian community. PURPOSE: To encourage physical and spiritual family members to encourage one another, and thus strengthen families and the Church. ILLUSTRATIONS: I. III. 6 Stories OBJECTIVES: I. WHAT: Encouragement is an important tool in building healthy, Christ-like friendships. II. WHY: We all go through times when we need encouragement, and we're all able to encourage the people around us. III. HOW: Examine ways for your teenagers to encourage the people in their lives through their words, actions, and presence. SCRIPTURE I. Primary Scripture: 1 Thes 5:11 a. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. II. Secondary Scripture: 2 Corinthians 7:5-7, 13:11, Eph 4:29 a. 5 For when we came into Macedonia, this body of ours had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn conflicts on the outside, fears within. 6 But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, 7 and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever. b. 11 Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. c. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

INTRODUCTION I. OPENING PRAYER II. STORY 1: Winning Chess Championship. Mother s Chicken soup. Father s encouragement. III. STORY 2: Threatening mom with Department of Child Services. Resulting Punishment. Though it discouragement at the time, but now I know better. IV. STORY 3: Question posed by Rina at meeting with parents. Scope of Family. Community. Opportunity to serve. a. TRANSITION: It is my prayer, that by studying 1 THES 5:11 today, you will also be encouraged to see the Church in this way. To see beyond its walls, and to the reality of our spiritual relationship. With this, let s explore what this community looks like. Let us all turn in our Bibles to the book of 1 st Thessalonians Chapter 5 Verse 11. It is located around the middle of the New Testament. BODY EXPOSITION a. AUTHOR/DATE: Paul, around 50-51 AD. (Only 2 decades from Jesus Resurrection) b. AUDIENCE: a. Paul was writing to the new believers in Thessalonica, which was a major military and commercial port. This city was known as the mother of Macedonia, an area located around modern day Greece. b. THESSALONICA: Thessalonica had a population of about 200,000, making it the largest city in Macedonia, and a prime target for Paul and his evangelism team (it was also located along the Egnatian Way, an important Roman road used for trading). Known as Mother of all Macedonia. c. BACKGROUND: a. ACTS 17:1-10, Paul Timothy and Silas planted church. some of [the jews] God fearing Greeks a number of leading women, ACTS 17:4 b. Problems with civil authority. Jealous Jews set up a mob (ACTS 17:5) Little choice but to leave. Later, while in Athens, Paul experienced much discouragement. Fruitless ministry (ACTS 17:16-34) i. Paul worried church would think he abandoned them and thus hurt the Gospel. ii. Paul worried the pressure of persecution would drive them down.

c. Paul sent Timothy to check on the church of Thessalonica. In ACTS 18:5, we read of Timothy s return. He then shares wonderful news. (1 THES 3:6) d. This is the setting of 1 Thessalonians. Paul is so excited to hear how well this young church is doing that he immediately writes 1 st Thessalonians. d. OCCASION: a. Elements of Timothy s report that prompted Paul to write: b. (1) Persecution (3:6-10) c. (2) Pauls reputation and sincerity (2:1-12, 17-20) d. (3) Confusion of the return of the Lord, Resurrection of Dead (4:13-5:11) e. (4) Areas individual and community life needed improvement (4:1-12, 5:12-22) e. PURPOSE: a. (1) Thanks to God for condition of church (1:2-10) b. (2) Case against false accusations against him (2:1 3:13) c. (3) Ethics: Suggest improvements to Church for Godapproved holiness (4:1 5:24) d. (4) Clarifying resurrection of the dead, and 2 nd advent. (4:13 5:3) f. TRANSITION: a. Family Imagery: i. READ 2:7 (Nurturing mother) ii. READ 2:11 (Encouraging father) b. Brothers: i. 1:4, 2:1, 2:9, 2:14, 2:17, 3:2, 3:7, 4:1, 4:6, 4:9, 4:10, 4:13, 4:18, 5:1, 5:4, 5:12, 5:14, 5:25, 5:26, 5:27 (20 TIMES IN JUST 5 CHAPTERS!) c. Encourage: i. 2:12, 3:2, 3:7, 4:1, 4:10, 4:18, 5:11 (7 TIMES) ii. GREEK: παρακαλειτε 1. Means Comfort, give exhortation, pray. 2. Similar to word for Holy Spirit. 3. GREEΚ: παρακλητοσ parakletos(john 14:16) a. Means Advocate, comforter. iii. Picture of this: READ 5:14-15 d. Build each other up: i. GREEK: οικοδοµειτε oikodomeite ii. Means House Builder. To construct, build up, edify, embolden. EXHORTATION a. TRANSITION: a. READ 1 THES 5:11 b. CHOOSE ENCOURAGING WORDS

a. READ EPH 4:29 i. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. b. (1) Encourage one another to live Holy Lives. (Ch 4) c. (2) Encourage one another with the Gospel and second Advent. i. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awaken or asleep, we will live together with him. (5:9-10) d. (3) Example of Verbal Encouragement i. And we exhort you, brothers: warn those who are lazy, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient with everyone. See to it that no one repays evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all. Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. (5:14 18) c. CHOOSE ENCOURAGING ACTIONS a. Think about a time when an encouraging action was more powerful than an encouraging word i. For me it is the scene where Jesus washes the disciples feet b. We find an example in scripture in READ 2:8-9 d. CHOOSE AN ENCOURAGING PRESENCE a. STORY 4: Wife thought I said Presents, not Presence b. READ 2 COR 7:5-7 c. Can you think of a time when the mere presence of a friend or fellow church member encouraged you by their mere presence? APPLICATION a. APPLICATION WITHIN THE FAMILY/HOME a. (1) Children/Teens Encourage Parents i. Poke fun of Newell and his dad? b. (2) Parents must Encourage their Children/Teens c. STORY CONNECTION: Mother s Chicken Soup d. STORY CONNECTION: Father s Words and Presence b. APPLICATION WITHIN THE CHURCH a. (1) Encourage fellow members. i. PICK ONE specific person in the Church to encourage. Find a way to encourage them by the end of next week. b. (2) Encourage Church leadership. i. READ 1 THES 5:12

This is the Best Case Scenario Church! i. READ 2:19-20!!! VI. PRAYER a. READ 3:12-13 b. INVITATION: Jesus is our ultimate encouragement. Ask this Great Encourager into your life. COMMUNION
