You can also receive our newsletter and email announcements by emailing colleen@knollwood.org, or just call the church office, 725-1343. Sunday School at Knollwood begins at 9:45 a.m. KBC WELCOMING STATEMENT Knollwood Baptist Church is an inviting, inclusive family of faith open to all persons, whatever their race, gender, socioeconomic status, special needs, or sexual orientation, who want to walk in the way of Jesus. ABOUT OUR WORSHIP Appreciation is expressed to Ben Heinsohn, Joy Vermillion Heinsohn, Lincoln Heinsohn, Emma Gibson Heinsohn, and Rachel Wiggins for sharing their musical gifts this morning. Today s Call to Worship and Prayer of Confession were written by Knollwood member Chip Mims. The acolytes are Austin Fowler and Jilly Fowler and the crucifer is Xander Tooze. Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net #A-724940. FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Curtis E. Long, and in recognition of their wedding anniversary today, August 19, by his wife, Sara S. Long. ABOUT OUR BANNERS In the Bible and in church tradition, the dove and fire symbolize the Holy Spirit. According to the four Gospels, the Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove at his baptism (Mark 1:10 and parallels). John the Baptist promised the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11; Luke 3:16). From Moses encounter with God by the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6) to the tongues of fire at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), fire is a sign of God s riveting, transforming presence. The Pentecost banner depicts the fire of God s challenge and the dove of God s gentle loving care. The artist who designed and painted the Pentecost banner is our own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Building B. Children s Worship resumes this month for 1st through 3rd graders. It meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month. During the Hymn of Devotion, children meet their leaders in the narthex to walk together to Children s Worship (B244). After the worship service, parents pick up their children from B244. Volunteers are needed to help chaperone the children during that time. If you are interested in volunteering one Sunday, please contact Chrissy Hardy, chrissy@knollwood.org. For the 2nd and 4th Sundays children are invited to enjoy the worship service with their families. Children's worship bags, activity bulletins and sermon notes are available in the narthex. AUGUST 26, WELCOME BACK SUNDAY The Sunday before school begins is Welcome Back Sunday at Knollwood. All Knollwood friends and members are encouraged to pour into our Sunday school classes and to gather for worship after a summer filled with travel and other breaks from regular patterns. If you haven t been in a Sunday school class for a 6

while or ever! this is a great time to explore options for weekly Bible study, conversation, and faithenhancing community. Sunday school begins at 9:45 but don t miss the conversational buzz of Knollchat with coffee, breakfast treats, and fellowship in the Dining Room from 9:15 9:45. Worship on Welcome Back Sunday (beginning at 10:55) will be a time of celebration and dedication, challenge and reunion. AUGUST 26, THE I DON T HAVE A CLASS CLASS On Welcome Back Sunday, Knollwood friends and members who don't now have a regular adult Sunday School class are warmly invited to an "I don't have a class" class. Diane Lipsett will lead the group in: (1) sharing a high-interest Bible lesson; (2) surveying what participants might be seeking in a Sunday School class; (3) suggesting existing groups and imagining new ones, hoping to identify or perhaps create a welcoming Sunday School experience for all who are interested.
