The Teachings of Jesus Christ

The Teachings of Jesus Christ Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world might be saved through him. He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their works were evil. For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, unless his works should be rebuked. But he that does truth comes to the light, that his works may be made known, that they are produced in God. 3

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those that grieve: for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they will be called the children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for being righteous: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when men insult you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of malicious lies about you, because of me. Rejoice, and be very glad: for your reward is great in heaven: for that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you. But woe to you that are rich, for you have received your comfort! Woe to you that are full, for you will hunger! Woe to you that laugh now, for you will mourn and weep! Woe to you, when all men speak well of you, for so did their fathers about the false prophets! You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt has lost its flavor, what will it be salted with? It is then good for nothing, but to be thrown out, and to be walked under people s feet. You are the light of the world. A city that is located on a hill cannot be 4

hidden. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a basket, but on a stand; and it gives light to all that are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine in front of men that they may see your good works, and give praise to your Father who is in heaven. Don t think that I came to do away with the law, or the prophets: I did not come to do away with them, but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke will in any way pass away from the law, until all things be fulfilled. So whoever will break one of these least commandments, and will teach men to do the same, he will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whoever will do and teach them, the same will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, that except your righteousness exceeds the righteousnessof the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter into the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said by them long ago, you must not kill; and whoever kills will be in danger of the judgment: but I tell you, that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment: and whoever says to his brother worthless will be subject to the court: but whoever will say, you fool, will be liable of the fire 5

of hell. So then if you bring your offering to the altar, and while there remember that your brother has a problem with you; leave your offering there at the altar, and go back; first make peace with your brother, and then come and offer your offering. Agree with your opponent quickly, while you are on the way with him; unless your accuser delivers you to the judge, and the judge delivers you to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never come out from there, until you have paid the last cent. You have heard that it was said by them long ago, you must not commit adultery: but I tell you, that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out, and throw it from you: for it is better for you to lose one of your body parts, than your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off, and throw it from you: for it is better for you to lose one of your body parts, than your whole body be thrown into hell. It has been said, whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a bill of divorcement: but I tell you, that whoever divorces his wife, except for the reason of fornication, makes her commit adultery: and whoever marries her that is divorced, commits adultery. 6

You have also heard that it has been said by them long ago, do not make a false promise, but keep your oaths to the Lord: But I tell you, do not promise at all; not by heaven; for it is God s throne: or by the earth; for it is his footstool: not by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. You should not promise by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your words be, yes, yes; no, no: for whatever is more than this comes from the evil one. You have heard that it has been said, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I tell you, do not resist an evil person: but whoever hits you on your right cheek, turn the other also to him. And if any man will sue you in court, and take away your shirt, let him have your coat also. And whoever demands you to go a mile, go with him two. Give to him that asks you, and do not turn away from him that would borrow from you. You have heard that it has been said; you must love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who do wrong to you, and persecute you; that you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love them which love you, 7

what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you are friendly only to your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do that? So then, you will be perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Beware not to do your charitable deeds before men, to be noticed by them: or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. So, when you do your charitable deeds, do not blow a trumpet in front of you, as the hypocrites do in the religious houses and in the streets, that they can have praise of men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward. But when you do your charitable deeds, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does: that your charitable deeds can be in secret: and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, you should not do as the hypocrites: for they love to pray standing in the religious houses and on the corners of the streets, that they may be noticed by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. But when you pray, don t use empty repetitious words, as people 8

who do not know God: because they think that they will be heard by their many words. So then, don t be like them: for your Father knows what your needs are, before you ask him. Let everybody pray like this: Our Father who is in heaven, Holy is your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our wrongs, as we forgive those who wrong us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. For if you forgive men their failings, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if you do not forgive men their failings, neither will your Father forgive your failings. Also when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance: for they look gloomy, so they may appear to others like they are not eating. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But when you go without food, anoint your head, and wash your face; so you will not look to others like you are not eating, but to your Father who is in secret: and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you openly. Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and rust destroys, and where thieves break in and steal: But store up treasures for 9

yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. What illuminates the body is the eye: so then if your eye is pure, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. So then if the light that is in you is darkness, how much is that darkness! No one can serve two masters: for he will either hate the one, and love the other; or else he will be devoted to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. So then I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or what you will drink; not even for your body, what you will wear. Isn t life more than food, and the body than clothes? Look at the birds of the air: how they do not plant, and they do not harvest, and store in barns; and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more valuable than them? How many of you can add one moment to your life by worrying? And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow; they don t work, and do not make clothes: but I tell you, that even Solomon in all his dignity was not clothed like one of these. So, if God clothes the grass of the field, that is here today, and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not even more clothe you, 10

O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, what will we eat or, what will we drink or, what will we wear? (for all these things do the godless people seek after:) for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But you seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you. So then don t worry about tomorrow: for tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Do not judge, so that you will not be judged. For with the judgment you judge, you will be judged: and with what measure you measure, it will be measured to you in return. And why do you notice the speck that is in your brother s eye, but do not consider the beam that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, let me pull the speck out of your eye; and, look, a beam is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the beam out of your own eye; and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother s eye. Do not give that which is holy to the dogs, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, because they might trample them under their feet, and turn back and attack you. Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you: For every one that asks receives; and he that searches finds; and to him that knocks it will be opened. Or 11

which of you, who if his son asks bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks a fish, will he give him a snake? So then if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? So then however you would like men to treat you, do the same to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Go in at the narrow gate: because wide is the gate, and broad is the road, that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in at that place: Because narrow is the gate, and difficult is the road, that leads to life, and there are few that find it. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep s clothing, but inside they are devouring wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit; but a rotten tree produces bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a corrupt tree cannot produce good fruit. Every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire. So then by their fruits you will know them. Not every one that says to me, Master!, Master!, will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Master!, Master!, didn t 12

we prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and have done many mighty miracles in your name? And then I will say to them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that practice wickedness. So then whoever hears these words of mine, and does them, he is like a wise man, who built his house on a rock: And the rain fell, and the floods rose, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn t fall: because it was founded on a rock. And every one that hears these words of mine, and does not do them, is like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand: And the rain fell, and the floods rose, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it collapsed: and great was its fall. I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes: and every branch that produces fruit, he prunes it, so it may produce more fruit. Now you are clean through the word that I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot produce fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine; no more can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches: He that remains in me, and I in him, the same produces abundant fruit: for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, 13

and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask what you desire, and it will be done to you. By this my Father is glorified, that you produce abundant fruit; so will you be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you: you remain in my love. If you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have obeyed my Father s commandments, and remain in his love. I have spoken these things to you, that my joy might remain in you, and that you might be full of joy. This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you. No man has greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you. From now on I will not call you servants; because the servant does not know what his master does: but I have called you friends; because all things that I have heard of my Father I have declared to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and produce fruit, and your fruit should remain: that whatever you will ask from the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, that you love one another. He that believes on me, believes not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that sees me sees him that sent me. I came into the world as a light, that 14

whoever believes on me should not remain in darkness. And if any man listens to my teachings, and does not believe, I do not judge him: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejects me, and does not accept my teachings, has one that judges him: the teachings that I have spoken, they will judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of my own authority; but the Father who sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is everlasting life: so then whatever I speak, even as the Father said to me, so I speak. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whoever will save his life will lose it: but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same will save it. For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul, or be thrown out? For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my teachings, the Son of man will be ashamed of him, when he will come in his own glory, and in his Father s, and of the holy angels, and then he will reward every man according to his works. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish Truly, truly, I say unto you, if a man obeys my teachings, he will never see death... You 15

must be born again The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins This is my blood of the new covenant, that is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work will be.
