Restrooms are also in the Parish House. A Children s Corner is available in the back of the church. Visitor s Card Please fill out a visitor s card (found on the hook in your pew) so we can get to know you better. You may hand it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. Flow of Worship We begin our service with the WORD including a SERMON, continue with PRAYERS, and follow with COMMUNION. Words in italics provide directions about when it is customary to stand, sit or kneel. If any of this is physically difficult for you, please remain seated. Bold type indicates words we will speak together. Music not printed in the bulletin is in the blue hymnal. Communion Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion and ALL are welcome to come forward for a blessing. To receive the bread, hold your hands out together. Amen. SUMMARY OF THE LAW HEAR what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Almighty and everlasting God, who dost govern all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of thy people, and in our time grant us thy peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE WORD OF GODI The people are seated for the First Lesson, Psalm, and Second Lesson. THE FIRST LESSON The prophet speaks with God s authority Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Moses said, The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the LORD your God at 3

Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: "If I hear the voice of the LORD my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die." Then the LORD replied to me: "They are right in what they have said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable. But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak-- that prophet shall die." The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GRADUAL PSALM Sung by the choir Confitebor tibi Psalm 111 Setting: Richard Massey 1 Hallelujah! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, * in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation. 2 Great are the deeds of the LORD! * they are studied by all who delight in them. 3 His work is full of majesty and splendor, * and his righteousness endures forever. 4 He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; * the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. 5 He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant. 6 He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands of the nations. 7 The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure. 8 They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity. 9 He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant forever; * holy and awesome is his Name. 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; * those who act accordingly have a good understanding; his praise endures forever. THE SECOND LESSON Limits to liberty: the case of food offered to idols 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; but anyone who loves God is known by him. Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "no idol in the world really exists," and that "there is no God but one." Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth-- as in fact there are many gods and many lords-- yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are 4

all things and through whom we exist. It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. "Food will not bring us close to God." We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols? So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against members of your family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing the Sequence Hymn and remain standing for the Gospel. SEQUENCE HYMN Where charity and love prevail Cheshire Hymnal 581 THE GOSPEL The healing of one with an unclean spirit Mark 1:21-28 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching-- with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. The people are seated for the Sermon. THE SERMON The people stand for the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People. The Rev. John D. Lane THE NICENE CREED Said by all WE believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being 5

with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE After each intercession: Let us pray to the Lord: Lord, hear our prayer. In the petition for the sick, the people join in naming those with special needs. Patti Burtner, Pat Clark*, Bob and Imogene Colby, Candace Conger, Champe Davis, Jim Dawson, Robert Dunn*, Martha Dudley* and George Fellows*, Sean Flanders*, David Flanary, Tom Hawks, George Huffman, Elizabeth Jacobs*, Richard Jacobs, Jean Kivlighan*, Nathan Long, John MacNeil, Preston Mayson*, Peter Meyers, Joe Mills, Britten Olinger Final intercession Remembering the Blessed Virgin Mary, and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To thee, O Lord. Concluding Collect God our Teacher, speaking with holy authority, liberating us from the forces of evil, hear the prayers we offer this day and give us courage as we proclaim thy truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The people kneel for the Confession. CONFESSION OF SIN AND ABSOLUTION MOST merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, 6

pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PEACE All stand The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. THE HOLY COMMUNIONI THE OFFERTORY The people remain seated while their offerings of bread and wine are brought forward and their monetary gifts are received. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving. OFFERTORY ANTHEM O Saviour of the world John Goss (1800-1880) O Saviour of the world, who by thy cross and precious blood hast redeemed us, save us, and help us, we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord. Amen. The people stand to sing the Presentation Hymn, and remain standing through the Sanctus & Benedictus. PRESENTATION HYMN Sung by all As they offered gifts most rare Dix Hymnal 119, v. 3 THE GREAT THANKSGIVING EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II The Book of Common Prayer, p. 340 The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The presider offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. 7

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Sung by all Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena Healey Willan Hymnal S 114 The people may kneel or remain standing. The presider continues with the Eucharistic Prayer. BCP p. 341 ALL glory be to thee, O Lord our God.... By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. THE LORD S PRAYER OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD & THE FRACTION ANTHEM Sung by all Agnus Dei Healey Willan Hymnal S 158 8

PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS Said by all WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. MINISTRATION OF COMMUNION All are welcome to come to the altar. There is a place set here for you. Gluten-free wafers are available on request. Baptized Christians may receive Communion. Those not yet baptized may receive a blessing. The ushers will guide you forward. COMMUNION MOTET Christ has no body now but yours David Ogden (b. 1966) Christ has no body now but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he sees, yours are the feet with which he walks, yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands. Yours are the eyes. COMMUNION HYMN Sung by all, seated Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness Schmucke dich Hymnal 339 SENDING FORTH OF THE EUCHARISTIC VISITORS At the conclusion of communion, the Eucharistic Visitors go to the altar rail. We send you out to share Communion this day. May you carry the prayers of all of us as you take this sacrament of Christ s presence. May those who receive it from you be strengthened and encouraged in that community we have together in our Lord Jesus Christ. 9

THE POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER Said by all, standing Let us pray ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. THE BLESSING The presider offers a blessing, and the people respond Amen. RECESSIONAL HYMN O for a thousand tongues to sing Azmon Hymnal 493 THE DISMISSAL The deacon or the presider sends the people forth, and the people respond Thanks be to God.
