St. Clare Our dear Sister Joan Kimball went home to God Thursday, January 25. Her funeral was celebrated on January 31 with burial in the monastery cemetery. Father Steven Pavignano, OFM, a long time friend, presided. Sister had become a home hospice patient in early January due to congestive heart failure. She was one of our twelve sisters that came to South Carolina on March 1, 1955 and was the last living sister from this pioneer group. Many of you will remember how she was often the first person you met when you visited our monastery on N. Pleasantburg or perhaps you met her shopping as she did many of the community errands. Her compassion, warmth and hospitality helped us to make many friends. She always enjoyed God s goodness in the beauty of all creation. She maintained the twinkle in her eye and her wonderful sense of humor till the end. We ask you to pray for our Sister Joan and her family, her many friends and all of her Poor Clare Sisters.

Page 2 A Message From Our Abbess Sr. Carolyn Forgette, osc What If Jesus Meant What He Said? Dear Friends, I am reading a book written by a friend, Nate Bramsen, with this title. It has intrigued me and caused me to ponder deeply on certain passages of Scripture. You may have favorite passages that come to your mind and heart when you are rejoicing or suffering; when you are in a quandary and need guidance; when you re lonely or overwhelmed. Right now as we remember with fondness our beloved Sr. Joan who went home to God on January 25th, I resonate with the passage from John s Gospel. I am going to prepare a place for you. Sr. Joan spent much of her life preparing heart-places that would please others. I believe she is doing it again. Included in this newsletter is our year end financial summary from our development department. With Sr. Nancy and all our other sisters I am amazed at the truth of Jesus words, Ask and you shall receive. You have been so generous to us, so quick to respond when we send an appeal for a specific need, so faithful in your care for us. It is with a very grateful and humbled heart that I thank you for considering the needs expressed in our past appeals and in particular for noticing the Spring Appeal in this publication regarding our need for a new car. Our cars get a lot of use. Even though we try to be faithful stewards and take good care of them, keeping up with scheduled maintenance, etc, unlike GOD s LOVE they do not last forever. Thank you for your help. As this letter comes to you we are into our Lenten journey. I for one am going to believe Jesus meant what he said when he invited, Come to me all you who labor and are heavily burdened and I will give you rest. I plan to spend my Lent turning to Jesus with whatever each day hands me and offering it to him as a gift of love and trust. I plan to spend this Lent letting God enfold me in love and goodness, so that love and goodness can radiate out to all around me. What about you? Are there words of Jesus touching your heart, words you could spend your whole Lent pondering, words that by the end of Lent you will KNOW that Yes! Jesus meant what he said. At the conclusion of Lent as we move into the 50 days of Easter Alleluias we will be celebrating that treasured tradition of Holy Week. Once again this year we will have Fr. Mick Joyce, OFM Cap with us. I m sure those of you who are close geographically and have joined us for these services in the past will remember Fr. Mick and the richness he brings us in his person, his celebration of Eucharist and his expounding on the words of Jesus. Fr. Mick will be here for Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil. Our Palm Sunday celebration will be at 4:30 on Saturday, March 24th with our own Fr. Jim Nero, OFM celebrating. If you are able to be with us, see the schedule of services for Holy Week on the back of this publication. If distance prevents you from celebrating with us, don t worry, we ll be carrying you along in our hearts. With affection for each of you,

Page 3 Our Spring Appeal March, 2018 Dear Friends, our Partners in Grace, Our Spring Appeal this year is a little different from previous ones. For once we don t have a once-in-alifetime project to ask you to assist us with, like a solar array, renovations at LaForesta, a walkway between LaForesta and the monastery, upgrading of our HVAC system or the like! No, we have a very simple, ordinary request that you can hopefully resonate with we are in need of replacing one of our two cars this year. The eleven of us use the two cars for all shopping, doctors appointments, errands and other necessary monastery business so they are well used! Each year we try to put aside some money towards the purchase of our next new car. It looks like 2018 is a year when we need to replace our van. We need a minivan for our weekly trips to the recycling center and our monthly Costco grocery shopping. We would appreciate your help with this extraordinary expense for an ordinary need. Because of who you are, we know you will do what you can to assist us with this. Remember, every little bit helps; no gift is too small; together the individual gifts all add up to what we need. We appreciate more than you can know your faithful support of our life of prayer. You are witnesses to God s love by your provident care. Please know you are being held in prayer by your Poor Clare Sisters every day. Gratefully, Sr. Carolyn and all Your Poor Clare Sisters P.S. By the way, DID YOU KNOW... You can support us every time you shop online at Amazon.com?! Yes, we receive 1/2 of 1% of all purchases you make. You can go to this link https://smile.amazon.com/ch/57-0688060 and designate us as your charity. It s that simple! So far we have 74 people who participate; Amazon sends us a quarterly report (no names, just numbers of people and purchases and amounts) and a check.

Page 4 Development Ministry Report 2017 Year End Financial Summary Once again we come to you humbled and grateful; that is our stance before God and before you as we review the incredible financial support we have received this past year from you, our friends and benefactors. As a means of being accountable, we present this year end financial summary to you. The second graph shows that our development expenses are less than 4% of our income. Your generosity ensures we can meet our other expenses like health insurance, building insurance and operating expenses. In addition we were able to complete the necessary renovation of our HVAC system and get the much needed walkway between the monastery and LaForesta completed. You continue to amaze us with your As you can see from the 1 st graph which shows the sources of our income, over 90% of our income is donations. Francis and Clare were mendicants so that is our heritage and tradition of over 800 years. As one of our wise elder sisters said to me in my early days as a Poor Clare, God has taken care of Poor Clares for over 800 years; God s not going to stop now! Of course YOU are the way God cares for us! generosity! You are teaching us a whole new meaning to the Gospel message Ask and you shall receive. We earnestly pray that you will be blessed throughout 2018 in all ways and may your deepest needs and hearts desires be met. Gratefully, Sr. Nancy and all your Poor Clare Sisters
