CAN A SAVED PERSON EVER BE LOST? Can those who have been truly born again ceased to be saved? Can a person who has truly been saved revert to their former lost condition? Is it possible that a saved person can be eternally secure? Contrary to what many religious groups claim IT IS POSSIBLE for Believers to be certain of salvation IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for Believers to lapse into their former condition. 1 st John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. NASB It should be noted that there is a difference between Security & Assurance Security: Implies that even though a Believer may sometimes backslide and be disobedient, nonetheless, if they have been truly converted, they are secure even if lapses occur along the way. Assurance: Implies that a Believer is confident that Christ is their Savior, God is their heavenly Father, and the Holy Spirit has sealed them until the day when their final redemption is realized. Just as a responsible father assures his children that they are loved, and will always be provided for and protected, so too does our heavenly Father inspire confidence in His children through the promises of security in His Word. God the Father does not want His children to feel unloved, fearful or neglected. The Apostle Paul knew that God is faithful and will keep Believers secure! 2 nd Timothy 1:12 for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. Page! 1 of! 9

Jesus said that if a person believes in Him for their salvation They will NEVER PERISH They will NEVER FACE THE FINAL JUDGEMENT They will NEVER DIE No one can REMOVE THEM FROM GOD S FAMILY John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life John 11:25-26 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this? John 10:27-30 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father s hand. 30 I and the Father are one. We are not saved by ANYTHING we did. GOD DID EVERYTHING for us to be saved It makes sense then that we CANNOT DO ANYTHING to become unsaved. Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. The Believers is united with Christ in His death, burial & resurrection. Because death could not hold Jesus, it cannot hold the Believer either. Jesus will NEVER have to die again Because when He died FOR sin He died TO sin This means that His relationship to sin changed and sin now sin has NO POWER over Him. Thus, BECAUSE we are in Christ Sin also has NO POWER over us Sin CANNOT condemn us Page! 2 of! 9

Romans 6:8-11 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 1 st John 5:11-12 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit Is our seal of salvation Is our guarantee of redemption Is our downpayment of our inheritance Ephesians 1:13-14 13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God s own possession, to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 2 nd Corinthians 5:5 Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge. 2 nd Corinthians 1:21-22 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, 22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. The Source Of Assurance & Security It is a sad fact that not every Believer enjoys assurance of their salvation. The reason for this is that ASSURANCE IS RELATED TO FAITH! Not every Believer has strong faith BUT THEY CAN & SHOULD! Page! 3 of! 9

Hebrews 10:22-23 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; Assurance comes from faith Faith = Taking God at His Word. A faith that ALL Believers can & should possess! If we are willing to simply believe what God has said Then we will have the assurance that accompanies salvation which is the rightful inheritance of every Believer, not merely and elite few. The Basis Of Assurance & Security Far too many make the mistake of determining the status of their salvation on the basis of how they feel. Human emotions fluctuate to such a degree that one would be unwise to make feelings be the basis of assurance. Consider the following fundamental reasons for Assurance & Security: The unconditional promises of God! God s ability to keep us! See all above verses! Jude 24+25 24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Page! 4 of! 9

1 st Peter 1:3-5 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Romans 8:31-39 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered. 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus Christ s intercession for us! Hebrews 7:25 Therefore He is able also to save [a]forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. The New Birth! 2 nd Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 2 nd Peter 1:3-4 3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Page! 5 of! 9

Regeneration: Him who called us by His own glory and [b]excellence. 4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. A radical & supernatural change in the inner nature By which a person is made spiritually alive, The new life of God that is implanted in the believer is immortal. A born again person can no more forfeit his/her relationship with their heavenly Father than an earthly son or daughter can forfeit their relationship with an earthly father. Nothing can change the fact that the father s genes and DNA are an integral part of that child s makeup. A father will never cease to be the father. Nothing can alter that reality. Though earthly parents may, for some reason, forsake their children Our heavenly Father plainly tells us that He will never leave us or forsake us! Hebrews 13:5 for He Himself has said, I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you How IMPLAUSIBLE would it be for a person, who was a child of God, to end up in hell, bearing in his/ her body the heavenly Father s DNA! Well what about Hebrews 6:4-6? 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. So far have cited only some of the passages of Scripture that make it abundantly clear that Believers cannot be lost after they have been born again into the family of God. We become children of God through faith in Christ. Once a person has become a child of God through faith in Christ he has eternal life. I cannot accept the interpretation that the people in Hebrews 6:4-9 were once saved and had lost their salvation. Page! 6 of! 9

Interpretation #1 There is a one interpretation of this passage that has some merit in it. There are those who contend that this is a hypothetical case. "If they shall fall away." There is only a possibility that this might happen. The writer does not say that it happens, only that it might be possible. Those who contend that this is the correct interpretation say that it is the biggest IF " in the Bible, and I would agree with them. But only the King James Version translates Hebrews 6:6 with IF ". In the Greek there really is no IF ". Instead its a participle and should be translated "having fallen away. Interpretation #2 The writer is not discussing the question of salvation at all in this passage. He is describing saved people. They have been enlightened. They have tasted of the heavenly gift. They have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit. They have tasted the good Word of God. They have tasted the powers of the world to come. The whole tenor of the text reveals that he is speaking of rewards which are the result of salvation. In verse 6 he says, "If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance. Not to salvation. But to repentance. Repentance is something that God has asked believers to do. For example, read the seven letters to the seven churches in Asia, as recorded in Revelation 2 + 3. He says to every one of the churches to repent. That is His message for believers. So the writer of Hebrews is talking about The fruit of salvation, Not about the root of salvation. And then fell away is an interesting word in the Greek. It is parapito and means simply "to stumble, to fall down." It would be impossible to give it the meaning of "apostatize." It is the same word used of our Lord when He went into the Garden of Gethsemane, fell on His face, and prayed. Page! 7 of! 9

Notice in verses 7-8 that he is illustrating the fruit of the Christian's life: For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: but that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned". If the believer's life brings forth fruit, it receives blessing from God. If it brings forth thorns & briers, it is rejected. Notice in verse 9 "But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation [he hasn't been discussing salvation but the things that accompany salvation], though we thus speak." He is speaking of the fruit of the Christian's life and the reward that comes to him as the result. The whole tenor of this passage is that He is warning them of the possibility of losing their reward. There is danger of our works being burned up so that we will have nothing for which we could be rewarded. 1 st Corinthians 3:11-15 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. NKJV The work of every Believer, is going to be tested by fire, and fire burns! The work you are doing today for Christ is going to be tested by fire. Someday every Believer is going to stand before the judgment seat of Christ. He is going to test you and see if you really had any fruit in your life. Have you grown in grace & knowledge of Him? Have you been a witness for Him? Has your life counted for Him? Have you been a blessing to others? Believers Will not be judged for salvation. But because Believers are saved He is going to find out whether or not the Believer is to receive a reward. Page! 8 of! 9

When the apostle Paul wrote to Titus, a young preacher, he dealt with the matter of works: "Not by works done in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy he saved us " (Titus 3:5). From this, one might be inclined to think that Paul is not going to have much regard for good works, but move down in that same chapter to Titus 3:8 I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works." Good works do not enter into the matter of salvation, but when one becomes a child of God through faith in Christ, works assume supreme importance. Page! 9 of! 9
