Unbelief Teaches Faith to Pray 16th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST September 12 & 13, 2015

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: This Saturday and Sunday we are blessed to have Mr. John Strasen former Lutheran Bible Translator to tell of his experiences of the past few years in Africa. Mr. Strasen will speak to our Bible Class on Sunday Morning and we will have an opportunity to meet after Sunday service with a dinner put on by our Ebenezer Mission Society. Welcome John! PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Lord Jesus Christ, our strength and support in all situations, grant us the power and presence of Your Holy Spirit that we may be certain of Your abiding presence. Give us confidence that because of Your sacrifice on our behalf, our heavenly Father welcomes our prayers and petitions; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and rules with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. HYMN Every Morning Mercies New TLH 537 Ev ry morning mercies new Fall as fresh as morning dew; Ev ry morning let us pay Tribute with the early day; For Thy mercies, Lord, are sure, Thy compassion doth endure. 2

Still the greatness of Thy love Daily doth our sins remove; Daily, far as east from west, Lifts the burden from the breast; Gives unbought to those who pray Strength to stand in evil day. As the morning light returns, As the sun with splendor burns, Teach us still to turn to Thee, Ever-blessed Trinity, With our hands our hearts to raise, In unfailing prayer and praise. Text: Greville Phillimore, 1821 84. Public domain. Tune: VOLLER WUNDER, Johann G. Ebeling, 1637 76. Public domain. INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 25:4 5; 86:11 12; 119:159 160 Make me to know Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all the day long. Teach me Your way, O LORD, that I may walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name. I give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify Your name forever. 3

Consider how I love Your precepts! Give me life according to Your steadfast love. The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous rules endures forever. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION It is good and right that we should make confession of our sins. The Small Catechism informs and directs us about confession with these words: Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven. Humble yourselves before God, confess your sins to Him, and implore His forgiveness. O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and penitent sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your present and eternal punishment. By nature, I am a sinful creature. By thought, word, and deed I have continually transgressed Your Law. For the sake of the sufferings and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a penitent and contrite being. Forgive me all of my sins, and grant me the power of Your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life. 4

God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith. Amen. Let it be done for you as you believe. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. WORD INTROIT Psalm 31:14 16; antiphon: v. 24 All: KYRIE Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD! But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, You are my God. My times are in Your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors! Make Your face shine on Your servant; save me in Your steadfast love! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. In peace let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. 5

For the peace from above, for every daily blessing, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Compassionate Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the healing, housing, feeding, and saving ministry of the Church of God in all the earth, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Strengthening Lord, have mercy. For this holy house and for all who offer here themselves and all that they are and have in worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. All-embracing Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE You Are the Way; through You Alone TLH 355 Thou art the Way; to Thee alone From sin and death we flee; And he who would the Gather seek Must seek Him, Lord, by Thee. Thou art the Truth; Thy Word alone True wisdom can impart; Thou only canst inform the mind And purify the heart. Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life; 6

Grant us that Way to know, That Truth to keep, that life Life to win, Whose joys eternal flow. SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, our support and defense in every need, continue to preserve Your Church in safety, govern her by Your goodness, and bless her with Your peace; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 50:4 10 (God s people are encouraged by the prophet.) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GRADUAL All: Fear the Lord, you saints, For those who fear Him lack nothing! Many are the afflictions of the righteous But the Lord delivers Him out of them all. CHOIR What a Friend We have in Jesus (Sunday) 7

EPISTLE James 3:1 12 (Counsel regarding edifying speech) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA VERSE Mark 9:23b All: Alleluia. All things are possible for one who believes. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Mark 9:14 29 (A child with an unclean spirit is healed.) The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 9th chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. 8

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness HS98 881 SERMON I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief! day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. HYMN Jesus Savior Come to Me TLH 356 Jesus, Savior, come to me; Let me ever be with Thee. Come and nevermore depart, Thou who reignest in my heart. Lord, for Thee I ever sigh, Nothing else can satisfy. Ever do I cry to Thee: Jesus, Jesus, come to me! Earthly joys can give no peace, Cannot bid my longing cease; Still to have my Jesus near, This is all my pleasure here. All that makes the angels glad, In their garb of glory clad, Only fills me with distress If Thy presence does not bless. Thou alone, my God and Lord, Art my glory and reward. Thou hast bled for me and died; In Thy wounds I safely hide. Come, then, Lamb for sinners slain, 10

Come and ease me of my pain. Evermore I cry to Thee: Jesus, Jesus, come to me! Patiently I wait Thy Day; For this gift, O Lord, I pray, That, when death shall come to me, My dear Jesus Thou wilt be. CLOSING COLLECT Heavenly Father, we thank You for having fed us with Your life-giving Word. Strengthen us through the same, help our unbelief, and grant us a portion with the saints in light eternal. This we ask through Jesus Christ, our everlasting High Priest, who with You and the Holy Spirit are one God, world without end. Amen. BENEDICTION Ephesians 6:11, 15 The LORD be with you as the only way to the Father in heaven. The LORD bless your days with the truth that is in Christ alone. The Lutheran Witness September 2015 A lot of charges are leveled against Christianity. And just as many questions are asked of it. After we re dead, do our bodies even matter? 14

Are we allowed to judge others? What about the old heresies that continue to rear their ugly heads still today? Is the Lord s Supper dependent upon how much faith we have? Do we really have to sing hard hymns? Is it enough to have a personal relationship with Jesus or should we go to to church too? Does Baptism really work? What about the verse in the Bible about Christians being hypocrites? Who do we believe? And how do we know where to start? The answers are easy: Jesus and His Word. It s never been easy to be the Church, but in this issue of The Lutheran Witness, you ll learn how easy it can be to debunk common myths leveled against Christianity and against Lutheranism in particular. Let s learn together how to make a good confession while keeping in mind, as cover story author the Rev. Derek Roberts reminds us, The Word of God is the number one aid in the fight against heresy. His true Word shines light on all falsehood. Thanks be to God! SAMPLE COPIES of Lutheran Witness are available at the back of the church. Go to www.cph.org/witness to subscribe to the magazine, and Like the magazine at www.facebook.com/thelutheranwitness to receive daily updates.
