Worship Worship Today Excerpt from the Sermon Journal, Monday, January 15, 2018 Written by Pastor Tom Harrison Unite to Grow - Ephesians 14-16 Babies used to terrify me. Though they were utterly helpless, I felt overwhelmed by them. I didn t know what to do. But having become a dad, I learned to respond to them with great affection. They provide such incredible joy. However, there is something wrong when the infant doesn t progress. Children are supposed to grow up, and there comes a point when immaturity isn t attractive. Likewise, baby Christians bring great joy to the family of God. However, we are supposed to move beyond spiritual infancy to mature in our relationship with Christ. While we have individual responses, we also are part of a larger, corporate body the church. I particularly like the passage about speaking the truth in love (verse 15). Something to Think About: How are you maturing in Christ? What are your goals for discipleship in 2018? As part of the church, what work is God calling you to do in 2018? Digging Deeper: Asbury places a high emphasis on ceremony, rituals, liturgy and vestments in worship. This is what s known as High Church and is true for Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, Episcopal, Lutheran and some Presbyterian churches. However, Asbury also allows for freer styles of worship, in keeping with some Protestant practices, which is often called Low Church, as it refers to a lower emphasis on tradition and more emphasis on congregational involvement and evangelism. This is true for Baptist, Quakers, Amish, some Methodist, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches. John Wesley, an Anglican clergyman, was accused of being Low Church because of his open-air preaching and training of church leaders, but he insisted on his commitment to the rituals of the Anglican Church. To this day, Methodism is a robust mixture of High Church traditions and Low Church evangelism. Regardless of where other denominations or congregations fall on this spectrum, we can value their strengths as we all seek to grow in Christlikeness, united under the Lordship of Jesus Christ who is the head of the body, the universal Church (Colossians 1:15-18).

As a way of growing together in spiritual maturity, Pastor Tom is challenging us to memorize this verse this week: 1/22 Philippians 2:4-5 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: For a complete scripture memory list, stop by any Guest Services desk today.
