Page Four Dear Padre, While attending Mass at a different church, my husband and I saw a woman clutching a dog. My husband was perturbed when she went to Communion carrying her dog. Are there guidelines about bringing animals to Mass? Animals are part of God s creation. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless and give him glory. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2416). We bless animals in honor of St. Francis, usually outdoors, showing our care for them in God s creation. Seeing dogs inside church is uncommon, though some churches have been noted to be pet friendly by encouraging parishioners to bring pets to Sunday worship. Your or any parishioner s experience requires parish leaders to make choices based on a clear rationale. Perhaps the pastor agreed to a special circumstance, allowing the dog because its presence offered emotional support. Service dogs, including emotional- support dogs, are certified and welcomed because of legitimate need. A parish policy about dogs should consider the safety and well-being of animals and parishioners. A strange environment with lots of people can make dogs anxious. Also, some people are anxious around dogs. In cases of conflict, human needs are typically taken more seriously. Another concern is cleanliness and allergies. Well-trained dogs may be accident free, but animals that trigger allergies pose problems. Reactions are serious matters, so policies need to consider people s health. Dogs in church should not be a distraction. Well trained service dogs have specific functions and should pose minimal distractions; family pets are another matter. Understanding the real need helps us form an appropriate pastoral response that serves the good of all. Fr. John Schmidt, CSsR Special announcement: We received some money in a sweepstakes envelope with no return address and no information on how or where to apply the money. If you sent in this money or dropped it into the collection basket, could you contact the Rectory (315-336-5072) and let us know how to handle this donation. If you wish to remain anonymous we will honor your wishes but we would like to apply this money as you would wish. In our first reading for today, we hear of God s gracious, abundant provision to the Israelites of daily bread and meat. St. Paul in our second reading encourages us to pull away the futility of our old way of life and put on our new self in Christ. Jesus assures the crowd that follows him, seeking a sign, that he himself is the Bread of Life. Only God can satisfy our longings! Today s readings from Sacred Scripture remind us of a fundamental truth about human beings: we are never satisfied. Nothing that the world provides be it food, material things or fulfillment of desires can ever be enough to make us truly content. In the end, only God can satisfy our longings. Hopefully you may have parked behind the church in the past few weeks. If you have done so I am sure you have seen the beautiful St. Joseph Garden in front of the garages. Msgr. Kennedy and Mark LaGasse have created a beautiful flower garden to praise the Lord. In his rooms in the Rectory, Msgr. Kennedy began in November growing the seeds of the red geranium flowers that are planted in the garden. He also did this when he was stationed with the Army in Germany. Mark has planted and cultivated the flowers in the garden. The statue of St. Joseph comes from the back yard of the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent at Rome Catholic High School. Please take a moment to admire the beautiful flower garden on our church property thanks to the work of these two good men. Again I remind you to please consider a gift to this year s HOPE APPEAL. We are a long way from meeting our parish goal for the success of this year s Appeal. A kind gift of any amount would certainly help us as we journey to the end of this year s Appeal. I THANK YOU in advance for your continued kindness as I pray for the success of our parish goal. Remember God Loves YOU and so do I!

Call 315-337-4010 Pope Francis Speaks to Families!! Are You Praying? My question to you is this: Are You Praying? Do you know that you can speak with Jesus with the Father, with the Holy Spirit as you speak to a friend? And not just any friend, but the greatest and most trusted of your friends!... Once again I invite you to encounter the Lord frequently reading sacred Scripture. If you are not already in the habit of doing so, begin with the Gospels. Read a line or two each day. Let God s word speak to your heart and enlighten your path. You will discover that God can be seen also in the faces of your brothers and sisters, especially those who are more forgotten: the poor, the hungry, those who thirst, strangers, the sick, those imprisoned. Have you ever has this experience? Dear young people, in order to enter into the logic of the kingdom of heaven, we must recognize that we are the poor with the poor. A pure heart is necessarily one which has been stripped bare, a heart that knows how to bend down and share its life with those most in need. HONORING OUR LADY OF FATIMA A PROCESSION WILL BE HELD IN HONOR OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA Sunday, August 19th Beginning at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church to Historic St. John s Church in Utica starting at 1:30 pm The Rosary led by Mike Dziura. will be prayed along the way, The Rosary will be said there.
