The Eyes of the Lord Are On the Righteous - but! Mark 11:12-14 - Nothing But Leaves Introduction: A. The Context Mark 10:46-11:21 (NKJV) ---- 46 Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you. 50 And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. 51 So Jesus answered and said to him, What do you want Me to do for you? The blind man said to Him, Rabboni, that I may receive my sight. 52 Then Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you well. And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road. a. 1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; 2 and He said to them, Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? say, The Lord has need of it, and immediately he will send it here. 4 So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. 5 But some of those who stood there said to them, What are you doing, loosing the colt? 6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David That comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! 11 And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve. 12 Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 In response Jesus said to it, Let no one eat fruit from you ever again. And His disciples heard it. 15 So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 16 And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple. 17 Then He taught, saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a den of thieves. 18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His teaching. 19 When evening had come, He went out of the city. 20 Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter, remembering, said to Him, Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away. 2. Came & Left Jericho 10:46 3. Sent disciples into Jerusalem to find colt 11:1-7 4. Triumphal Entry Into Jerusalem 11:8-10 5. B. Mark 11:12-14 (NKJV) - 12 Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 In response Jesus said to it, "Let no one eat fruit from you ever again." And His disciples heard it. C. Three Ever Present Truths 1. What Jesus Sought & Seeks - 2. What Jesus Found & Finds 3. What Jesus Did & Will Do - II. What Jesus Sought then & Seeks today - A. Fruit from the fig tree (He had the right to expect some for it displayed leaves) B. Fruit from Israel 1. Israel was God s chosen people Deut 7:6 (NKJV) ---- 6 For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. 2. God wanted to save them Mat 23:37 (NKJV) ---- 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! C. Fruit from us! Jesus Has The Right To Expect Fruit In Us 1. We are God s holy & special people Titus 2:14 a. Titus 2:14 (NKJV) ---- 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. 2. We have heard & accepted the gospel Col. 1:5,10 a. Colossians 1:5 (NKJV) ---- 5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, b. Colossians 1:10 (NKJV) ---- 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 3. We are in Christ Jn 15:1-10 a. John 15:1-10 (NKJV) ---- 1 I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. 9 As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father s commandments and abide in His love. 4. We should bear the fruit of the Spirit Gal 5:22,23 a. Galatians 5:22 (NKJV) ---- 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (1) Galatians 5:23 (NKJV) ---- 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 5. We should be growing spiritually 2 Pet 1:5-10 a. 2 Peter 1:5-10 (NKJV) ---- 5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, Page 2 of 7

to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; b. Jesus Seeks To Find Us Useful In His Service Philippians 1:11; Matt 25:14-30. (1) Philippians 1:11 (NKJV) ---- 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (2) Matthew 25:14-30 (NKJV) ---- 14 For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord s money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them. 21 His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord. 22 He also who had received two talents came and said, Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them. 23 His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord. 24 Then he who had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours. 26 But his lord answered and said to him, You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. III. What Jesus Found then & Finds today? A. On the fig tree Nothing But Leaves It professed to have fruit but it had none. (Mark 11:13,14) 1. Mark 11:13 (NKJV) ---- 13 And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 2. Mark 11:14 (NKJV) ---- 14 In response Jesus said to it, Let no one eat fruit from you ever again. And His disciples heard it. 1 B. In Israel Blind guides, (Mat 23:24); Hypocrites, (Mat 23:27,28); Those who caused others to 1 The New King James Version. Nashville : Thomas Nelson, 1982 Page 3 of 7

blaspheme, (Rom 2:17-24) 1. Matthew 23:24 (NKJV) ---- 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! 2. Matthew 23:27 (NKJV) ---- 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men s bones and all uncleanness. a. Matthew 23:28 (NKJV) ---- 28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 3. Romans 2:17-24 (NKJV) ---- 17 Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God, 18 and know His will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law. 21 You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say, Do not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? 24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you, as it is written. C. In The Church? What Does Jesus Find In His People Today? 1. People who worship in Spirit & Truth? John 4:24 a. John 4:24 (NKJV) ---- 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. 2. People who speak where the Bible speaks? 1 Pet 4:11 a. 1 Peter 4:11 (NKJV) 11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 3. People who diligently seeks for truth? Acts 17:11,12; 2 Tim 2:15; 2 Cor 13:5 a. Acts 17:11 (NKJV) ---- 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (1) Acts 17:12 (NKJV) ---- 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. b. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NKJV) ---- 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. c. 2 Corinthians 13:5 (NKJV) ---- 5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? unless indeed you are disqualified. 4. People who are bearing fruit for the Lord? Mat 13:23 a. Matthew 13:23 (NKJV) ---- 23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. b. If Jesus Returned TODAY Would You Be Found To Be Fruitful? Matt. 25:14-30 (1) Matthew 25:14-30 (NKJV) ---- 14 For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 19 After a long time the lord of those Page 4 of 7

IV. servants came and settled accounts with them. D. What Does Jesus Find In His People Today? 1. Are there those HERE who have NOTHING BUT LEAVES? 2. Unauthorized practices? - 3. Just going through the motions? Insincere? 4. Hypocritical? 5. Apathetic? - 6. Not growing, i.e. NOT bearing fruit? a. If Jesus Returned TODAY Would You Be Found To Be Fruitful? Matt. 25:14-30 What Jesus Did then & Will Do today and in Judgement: A. With the fig tree Cursing Let no one eat fruit from you ever again. (11:14) 1. With Israel Warned them, (1 Kings 9:6-9; Mat 3:10), a. 1 Kings 9:6-9 (NKJV) ---- 6 But if you or your sons at all turn from following Me, and do not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land which I have given them; and this house which I have consecrated for My name I will cast out of My sight. Israel will be a proverb and a byword among all peoples. 8 And as for this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and will hiss, and say, Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house? 9 Then they will answer, Because they forsook the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore the Lord has brought all this calamity on them. b. Matthew 3:10 (NKJV) ---- 10 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 2. Cursed them (Mat 23:29-36); a. Matthew 23:29-36 (NKJV) ---- 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are Page 5 of 7

sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers guilt. 33 Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? 34 Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. 3. Destroyed them, (Mat 24; Luke 19:43,44); (Josephus, 70 AD) a. Matthew 24 (NKJV) b. Luke 19:43 (NKJV) ---- 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, c. Luke 19:44 (NKJV) 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation. B. With The Church? 1. Those who bear thorns & briars will be burned (Heb 6:8; 2 Thes 1:7-9) a. Hebrews 6:8 (NKJV) ---- 8 but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned. b. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 (NKJV) 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 2. Those with no fruit will be cut off (John 15:1-6) a. John 15:1-6 (NKJV) ---- 1 I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 3. Those who are unprofitable will be cast away - into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Mat 25:30) a. Revelation 3:15-16 (NKJV) - 15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. C. The Faithful 1. Those who are rich in good works - (Rom 2:7 NKJV) ---- 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 2. Good and faithful servants...
