CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX OCTOBER 27, 2013 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The New Testament tells a story of how Jesus performed a miracle to feed five thousand hungry people in the desert. He performed this miracle only after reminding His disciples, and of course each of us as well, of our obligation to feed the poor. Jesus had just heard the sad news of His cousin, John the Baptist s murder. His heart was full of sorrow and He went out into the desert to be alone for a while. But the people would not leave Him alone. Suddenly there is a large crowd gathered around Him. As usual He begins to teach, to heal and to console them. The day wore on and the night was approaching. The disciples wanted the crowd to disperse presumably to have their own meal on time and take their rest. But the Lord would have none of it. His message as always is clear: there is no need for them to leave; give them something to eat yourselves. The Disciples solution to the problem if it was a solution at all was to pass the buck and deny responsibility or pass it on to someone else. I suppose the disciples were the forerunners of some among us today who see the hungry faces of men and women and children flashing on TV screens and change stations. Or see them on our streets or near our homes or near our church and just walk right by. We often do not want to know that some reasons for their poverty are beyond their control like prolonged drought and soil-erosion, or homelessness or illness or financial loss. The question for us today should be to try to understand the Lords attitude, the Christian attitude, toward poverty and hunger. In the desert that day Jesus didn t ask them questions about their income or their work or their lack of it. He just fed them. Because He was compassionate; because Jesus heart was moved with concern for them. Indeed Jesus gave them more than they expected. He not only fed them with bread, but healed their infirmities not only feeding the hunger of their bodies but the hunger of their minds and hearts. Jesus is making a powerful statement of what love is all about. Alter all is there not in our day and in our family and in our community a huge famine of faith and hope and a very big drought of real love and caring for one another? What we can do or should do is to look at the faces of our unfortunate brothers and sisters those who are hungry, the jobless and the homeless. What we ought to do more is to examine our conscience in the light of Christ s example of selflessness and begin to share more of our time, our talent and our wealth with those who are in need. As pastor I am personally very proud of so many of our people here at St. Theresa. Your many kindnesses to those who are in need have continued to bring the Lord s love out to others. You have learned well from Jesus that people are more important than gold or silver. Thank You! And never allow others to change this priority. November 1, 2013 is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will have a vigil Mass on Thursday, October 31 at 7:30PM and on Friday, November 1 the Mass schedule will be 8:00, 9:00 and 10:30AM. ALL SOULS DAY NOVEMBER 2, 2013 Please be sure to submit your All Souls Day envelope with your intentions so we may pray for your deceased loved ones. If you are in need of an envelope they will be in back of the church. HOLY NAME SOCIETY The Holy Name Society is having a Harvest-Moon Basket Raffle. The raffle will run until Sunday, November 24 th. The drawing will be held after the 12:15 Mass on the 24 th. Tickets will be $1.00 for one and 6 for $5.00. The Basket is from Borgatti s Ravioli on 187 th Street. Tickets can be purchased before and after all the Masses and at the Rectory. Thank you for your generosity. Our Eucharistic Adoration is on Wednesdays at 1:15 2:15PM and then again at 7:00-8:00PM. The new times will allow more parishioners to participate in the Holy Hour. We will be praying for our own intentions and for our children and grandchildren. FIRST FRIDAY This Friday November 1 st is First Friday we will have our Holy Hour from 7:30-8:30PM and the church will remain open until 10:00PM for private adoration. A PRAYER FOR ALL SAINTS DAY God of all, on this day we recall those who have gone before us, leaving this world and joining you forever. Help us to remember that we are never alone. For even when we feel lost in our walk with you, we have a cloud of believers surrounding us, cheering us on. May your saints guide us with their words, inspire us with their example, and bring us to holiness with their prayers. Most of all, give us the desire to be saints ourselves, to know, love and serve you in this life, and enjoy you forever in the next, fulfilling the purpose for which you created us. Amen.

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME DONATIONS FOR SANCTUARY LAMP The holidays are fast approaching and it is the perfect time to give thanks for our many blessings. Some of the items needed are canned vegetables and yams, soups, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, pasta, tomato sauce, cake mixes, frostings, tea, coffee, and non-dairy creamer, boxed juices and any other nonperishable items. Of course we have the Tree of Life which is a permanent memorial, but then there are those of us who want to do something on a weekly basis. Over the past few years we began taking donations for Altar Bread in memory of our loved ones, and each week their name and the name of the donor is posted in the bulletin.
