extra hour of sleep. Advent Giving Tree This weekend we have out our Advent Giving Trees decorated with name tags of residents of our local nursing homes and health care facilities. We invite parishioners to take a name tag and get some kind of token gift for that person. Then bring it in, (and leave it in one of the Church vestibules) attractively wrapped, with the name tag easily visible on the package around the weekend of December 6 th. The Christian Service Committee will then bring the gifts to the various facilities. If you have any questions, please call Arlene in Germantown at 537-6136, or Kathryn McDonald in Hudson at 828-0506. Dining Out For Others Help Catholic Charities fight hunger by Dining Out For Others every Wednesday in November at local partner restaurants. Go to www.catholiccharitiescg.org for a list of participating restaurants and dates. Thanks for supporting the Soup Fest The results from this year s Soup Fest at Father Gerken Hall, Germantown, were the outstanding. Approximately $400 in proceeds were realized. We thank everyone who helped make this event such a success, especially those parishioners who contributed their time and talents to the making of the soups and desserts, those who helped set up and clean up, and those parishioners who supportive by their presence. The word among us The Word Among Us November issue is available in the front vestibule for $1.00 a copy. Keep using this valuable tool to experience the power of God s Holy Word.

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 30, 2016 Operation Pilgrim When the Colonists first settled our land, they were so grateful for the first harvest, they wanted to thank God by sharing and celebrating with their new neighbors. Keep the spirit alive! Join with others in our Parish to sponsor a Thanksgiving Dinner by supplying the fixin s so others may have a good Holiday Dinner. Beginning the weekend of October 29 and 30 we would appreciate donations of non-perishable foods for the Thanksgiving baskets that we put together for the less fortunate in our communities. This food drive will continue right up until Thanksgiving. Last year the Germantown Community Cupboard in conjunction with all the local churches put together 45 baskets for Thanksgiving; and Catholic Charities in Hudson assisted another 100 families. Each week bring to Mass at least one of the items listed below. Late in November all the groceries collected will be presented to our local food pantries. Last year over one hundred families were helped; so please help continue to respond to these needs. stove top stuffing, stuffing mix, instant mashed potatoes, rice can of gravy, jar of gravy cans of: cranberries, yams, green beans, or other vegetables juices muffin mixes, cake mixes, frosting, graham cracker crust or pie crust mix pumpkin or apple pie filling.or frozen pies hams or frozen turkeys CASH: We also accept monetary donations; just specify that it is for either Operation Pilgrim, Hudson, Operation Pilgrim, Germantown, or the Germantown Food Pantry. To arrange to drop off turkeys, hams, or frozen goods in Germantown, call Arlene Liepshutz at 828-1334. To drop off items in Hudson, call Catholic Charities at 828-8660 Thank you for caring God is perfect. Only humans make misteaks. Reflections on today s Scriptures Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over. Zacchaeus was serious about following Jesus. Maybe at the start he was just curious when he ran ahead to scale that sycamore tree. But that curiosity developed into a life-changing experience when Jesus called him by name. At that moment, when the Lord chose Zacchaeus to be his host for the evening, the rich tax collector came down quickly and received him with joy. And shortly thereafter came his promise of conversion and penance. Not only would he change his ways; he would make up for his former ones. And thus Jesus declared, Today salvation has come to this house. Penance isn t a popular concept in our modern era. We like to think about God's great mercy and forgiveness, but it's not so fun to think about the lingering effects of our sin. When Zacchaeus stole money, people suffered, especially the poor. His conversion to the ways of God wouldn't make up for the suffering he had inflicted on people. But his choice to go back and set things aright could make a difference. Sometimes, we are called to do something similar. Of course it is not always possible to go back and directly restore the relationships or situations that we have damaged through our sins. However, it IS always possible to offer a kind of sacrifice often called making reparation for our sin. We can do something virtuous and offer it to God as a kind of deposit in the universal bank of goodness to make up for the unjust withdrawals we have previously made. In this way, we too can show that we are serious about following the Lord. Gina Loehr Don t add up your troubles. Count your blessings.
