Mission We are a Spirit-led Community That Exalts Christ, By Equipping Disciples To Engage the World 11 Jan 2015

Making Sense of Heaven and Earth

Different Values? And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

Different Citizenship? Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. (NASB) Friends, this world is not your home, so don t make yourselves cozy in it. Don t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. (The Message) 1 Peter 2:11

Different Acceptance? If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. John 15:19

Different Purpose? I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. John 17:15-16,18

Different Focus? Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on earth. Colossians 3:1-2

Different Investment? Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21

3 Modern Paradigms 1. To engage the world, we must be people who exalt Christ (worshippers) 2. To engage the world, we must leave the confines of church 3. To engage the world, we must change our perspectives 22 Feb 2015

Finding An Anchor The Lord s Prayer Our relationship His concerns Our concerns His majesty

Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Heaven & Earth I Heaven & Earth II Work & Wages Relationships & Reconciliation Ethics & Evil M & Majesty

Our Father who is in heaven Matthew 6:9a

Our Father in Heaven Double Relationship Sonship & Brotherhood (With Him, With One Another) Double Reality Transcendance & Immanence (He is Above, He is Near)

Double Relationship Sonship Brotherhood

Relationship - Sonship Jewish Understanding of God as Father Deliverer of Israel (Hosea 11:1) out of Egypt I called my son Ruler / Creator (Isaiah 64:8) Potter, clay, work of Your hand

Relationship - Sonship Jesus Elaboration of God as Father Prodigal Son and Radical Father (Luke 15:11-32) Father sees, knows, cares (Sermon on the Mount)

Relationship - Sonship Business versus Family What I have for you versus What I am to you Performance versus Commitment

Application How is my Father-son / Father-daughter relationship with God? Do I have a right perspective of God as Father?

Relationship - Brotherhood The vital OUR Common perspective OUR Father Common petitions OUR daily bread, OUR sins...

Application Not a prayer in isolation, but in community Not a living in isolation, but in community Do I struggle alone in my daily living? Will I include the household of Father God in my struggles?

Double Reality Transcendance Immanence

Reality - Transcendance Our Father In Heaven (greek: in the heavens) He is above, other than, distinct from all He has made

Reality - Transcendance Our Father In Heaven (greek: in the heavens) For You are the Lord Most High over all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods. Psalm 97:9

Reality - Immanence Our Father In Heaven The ongoing presence and activity of God in His creation

Reality - Immanence Our Father In Heaven Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? Matthew 6:26

Application Father God is above all, yet He is near. Nothing affects Him, yet He is affected by us. How does this awareness affect the way we live?

Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
