Seeing Christ Through Obedience James 1:22-25 It was Charles Finney who said, Revival is a new beginning of obedience to God. I believe if we are going to see Christ in our present day Church, we will do so because of a life of consistent obedience to Will and Word of God. If you study the life of Jesus Christ, you will notice that His life was constantly and always marked by obedience. In fact, this was the very passion of Jesus life. It was His passion, and His goal, to live a life of obedience to His heavenly Father, which He did with absolute perfection. For example, Jesus said in John 4:34, My food is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. He said, It is my desire to do my Father s will. The Apostle Paul described the life of Jesus when he said in Romans 5:19, For as by one man s (Adam) disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one (Christ) shall many be made righteous. Paul went on to say in Philippians 2:8 that Christ made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. It is my deep conviction that the world will never see us living the successful Christian life until it sees us living the life of consistent obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ. And I believe that one of the greatest calls in all the Word of God to obedience is found here in James 1:22 with the clear call to But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. There are three tremendous truths that stand out in this verse of scripture, and I want to share them with you today. First of all, James tells us that hearing is not God s standard. That is very important. Hearing is not God s standard. The command is clear, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only Now we all would agree that hearing is very important. We would never minimize the importance of hearing the Word of God. I think the writer of Romans said it well in Romans 10:14, 17, How, then, shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? It is true that hearing is important! But hearing the Word of God is not enough! James is simply telling us that hearing is not God s standard, and that hearing the Word of God is not enough! I am convinced that there has been created among God s people a mind set concerning this matter of hearing the Word of God. I believe that many Christians have the attitude, Well, I went to Church. I heard the Word of God. That is all that God expects of me. My friend, that is absolutely not true! You know, and I know, that hearing the Word of God is not enough. No sermon accomplishes its purpose until a hearer of the Word becomes a doer of the Word of God. You might hear a man of God preach a message, you Page 1

may say Amen and hallelujah, but the Word that is heard does not release until that Word has been obeyed. Somehow the Spirit of God needs to convey to us as Christians, that if the world is going to see Jesus in the Church, our hearing of the Word of God is not enough, and something must be done about what we hear! There seems to be a fad where people are looking for some new truth. People are saying, Give me some new truth, some new message, or some new words. I would never minimize that which is new. But my friend, I would say to you today that the Church of Jesus Christ does not necessarily need to hear something new, we need to obey what we already know. We have enough truth to win this world to Jesus Christ, if we would simply be doers of the word and not hearers only. It is imperative that you and I understand that hearing is not God s standard. In fact, James tells us that if we hear the Word of God and do not obey it, that it actually deceives us. In recent history we have been plagued with an increase of cult activity that uses just enough Scripture to deceive those people who are looking for the unusual and the spectacular. We do not need to be deceived, and we do not want to be deceived, but you don t have to be involved in some cult movement to be deceived, for we have been told in James, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. I wonder if there are members of this congregation who have been hearing the Word of God over and over again, and somehow they feel, I have done exactly what God wants me to do. I fulfilled the conditions of God s plan for salvation. Therefore, I am doing God s will for my life. But, the Bible says that by hearing the Word of God and not obeying it, they are deceiving their own selves. And the person, who believes to faithfully attend church, and to diligently study the Bible, is all there is to the Christian life has been deceived, for God s standard for the Christian is not hearing alone! Therefore, the second thing is that obedience is God s standard for the Christian. James says, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Have you ever really noticed how much of the Word of God calls us to obedience? The more you look into the Bible; the more and more you see the call to God to obedience. Romans 6:16 says, Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 1 Peter 1:22 says, Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart. And we have been told in Acts 5:29 that We ought to obey God rather than men. Over and over again the Word of God calls us to obedience. Even in the Old Testament, 1 Samuel 15:22 says, Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings Page 2

and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. One does not have to be a Bible scholar, nor a theologian, to realize that over and over again the Word of God calls the Church to a life of consistent obedience to God. I think we would all agree that it is a serious matter to call someone a fool. There is only a few times that God used the term fool. On one occasion God said this as seen in Psalm 14:1, The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. On another occasion God said, Only a fool would make a mock of sin. And on one occasion Jesus, talking about this matter of hearing and obeying, said this in Matthew 7:24-27, Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall. Do you understand what Jesus was saying? He says, if a man hears the Word of God; if a woman hears the Word of God, and does not obey it, the Bible says they are foolish in the sight of a holy and righteous God. Listen to me today, I thank God for your attendance in our Worship Services. I thank God for your Sunday School attendance. I thank God for your Bible Study and Life Group involvement. But I tell you, when you substitute hearing the Word of God for obeying the Word of God, you are deceiving yourselves and robbing yourselves of the power of God upon your life, and upon this Church. Now the question is this If we are going to have success through obedience, then what kind of obedience does God call for? Now listen and get this God has never lowered His holy standards. God still call for 100% obedience from His people. Have you ever noticed the lie that Satan tries to instill in the mind of the Christian? It goes something like this, If you must be saved, then don t go off the deep-end! Don t let the world, and your friends think you are some kind of religious fanatic. In other words Satan is saying to the children of God, Partial obedience is good enough, after all you are already saved. I agree with Dr. Stephen Olford who said, Partial obedience is the greatest sin of the Church. Why? Because God call us to 100% obedience! Having said that, I want you to see two very important elements of obedience. First, I want you to see the command of obedience. I guess the greatest example of partial obedience in the entire Bible is a man by the name of Saul, Page 3

and the story is found in 1 Samuel 15. God sent Samuel to Saul with a message, and we are told in verses 1-3, One day Samuel said to Saul, I anointed you king of Israel because the Lord told me to. Now listen to this message from the Lord! This is what the Lord Almighty says: I have decided to settle accounts with the nation of Amalek for opposing Israel when they came from Egypt. Now go and completely destroy the entire Amalekite nation - men, women, children, babies, cattle, sheep, camels, and donkeys. And off Saul went with his great army of men to do battle for God. But we are told in verse 9 of Saul s partial obedience, Saul and his men spared Agag s life and kept the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs everything, in fact, that appealed to them. They destroyed only what was worthless or of poor quality. And then in verses 10-11 we are told that God called His prophet Samuel to Himself and said, Then the Lord said to Samuel, I am sorry that I ever made Saul king, for he has not been loyal to me and has again refused to obey me. Samuel was so deeply moved when he heard this that he cried out to the Lord all night. Do you realize that Saul had done about 80% of everything that God had told him to do? He had fought a great battle. He had destroyed most of the enemy. He had destroyed most of the sheep and oxen. He had truly done some great thing for the cause of God. But he stopped short of full obedience, and he broke God s heart. Listen to me today, God does not accept partial obedience. And as long as the children of God seek to choose our own terms of obedience to God, we will never experience success through obedience. God hates partial obedience. There are a great many people that have the idea that partial obedience is alright for them because they have personal and unusual circumstances in their lives. And yet, when writing to the Church at Corinth, Paul said this in 1 Corinthians 2:4-5, My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit s power, so that you faith might not rest on men s wisdom, but on God s power. It will not be the compelling nature of our theological arguments that compels men and women to seek Christ, but our obedience to His call on our lives. It is when we determine to love as He taught us to love. When we determine to forgive as He taught us to forgive. When we determine to pray as He taught us to pray. You see, divine intervention is received when the world in which we live sees that we are real and not just religious hypocrites. Although it is a fact that our culture is never going to be entirely converted, I am convinced that when people see Christians practicing radical obedience both individually and collectively, the message of the Gospel will make a much greater impact. Therefore, if we are going to make an eternal impact for Christ Christians must be more than just hearers of the Word, but also doers. Page 4

When will the world see Christ through obedience? I tell you today, the world will see Christ through the Church when the Church stands and declares, Hearing God s Word is not God s standard. Hearing is not enough, for God has called us to a life of consistent, and complete, and total obedience to His known Word and Will. Second, I want you to see the character of obedience. What do I mean by the character of obedience? Simply this obedience does not begin in the act, obedience begins in the heart. Look at Romans 6:17, But God be thanked, that whereas you were the servants of sin, you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. This is the very same thing Jesus said in Luke 6:45, A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. It is a biblical fact that obedience begins within the heart of the child of God! It is not a matter of ability; it is a matter of obedience. It is not a matter of weakness; it is a matter of wickedness. It is not a matter of understanding; it is a matter of willingness. And until you and I decide that we want to be obedience to the Word and the will of God, we never will. The truth of obedience is found in Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. God never said we could be obedient in our own power. God never said we could forgive in our own power. God never said we could overcome bitterness in our own power. God never said we could have a sweet spirit in our own power. God never said we could be pure in our own power. But, God promised that if we are willing to be obedient, then He would give us the power to be obedient. And with every demand comes this promise found in Philippians 2:13, For it is God who works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. If the world is ever going to see Christ in the Church, it will be when we, as believers, decide we are going to obey God literally, utterly, joyfully, and always. The time has come for us to make some new adjustments in our commitments and obedience to Christ. We must be willing to obey Christ in the courthouse, in the bank, in the store, in the shops, on the farm, and everywhere. If you will show me a man; if you will show me a woman; if you will show me a Church that says, I have determined to be obedient to Christ, come what may. Show me that person, or show me that Church, and I will show you someone that is being blessed of God. And I will show you a Church that is growing for the glory of Christ. Page 5

Today, God is speaking to some of you concerning your relationship to Christ through obedience. It might be through your obedience for salvation. It might be through your obedience concerning church membership. It might be through your obedience is using your talents and abilities in ministry. It might be through your involvement in Bible Study or Life Groups. It might be through your obedience in living the Christian life with consistency. But whatever the case might be, are you willing to be obedient? If you have never been saved, why not today? Everyone please stand for prayer. Father, Your Word is true. Today, I have a better understanding of the importance of being obedient to Your Word and will for my life. Give me the courage to make right decisions when it comes to being obedient. In Jesus name. Amen. Page 6
