JOHN 1:29-34 The very next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and yelled out, Here he is, God s Passover Lamb! He forgives the sins of the world! This is the man I ve been talking about, the One who comes after me but is really ahead of me. I knew nothing about who he was only this: that my task has been to get Israel ready to recognize him as the God-Revealer. That is why I came here baptizing with water, giving you a good bath and scrubbing sins from your life so you can get a fresh start with God. John clinched his witness with this: I watched the Spirit, like a dove flying down out of the sky, making himself at home in him. I repeat, I know nothing about him except this: The One who authorized me to baptize with water told me, The One on whom you see the Spirit come down and stay, this One will baptize with the Holy Spirit. That s exactly what I saw happen, and I m telling you, there's no question about it: This is the Son of God. MATTHEW 21:1-11 When they neared Jerusalem, having arrived at Bethphage on Mount Olives, Jesus sent two disciples with these instructions: Go over to the village across from you. You ll find a donkey tethered there, her colt with her. Untie her and bring them to me. If anyone asks what you're doing, say, The Master needs them! He will send them with you. This is the full story of what was sketched earlier by the prophet: Tell Zion s daughter, Look, your king s on his way, poised and ready, mounted On a donkey, on a colt, foal of a pack animal. The disciples went and did exactly what Jesus told them to do. They led the donkey and colt out, laid some of their clothes on them, and Jesus mounted. Nearly all the people in the crowd threw their garments down on the road, giving him a royal welcome. Others cut branches from the trees and threw them down as a welcome mat. Crowds went ahead and crowds followed, all of them calling out, Hosanna to David s son! Blessed is he who comes in God s name! Hosanna in highest heaven! As he made his entrance into Jerusalem, the whole city was shaken. Unnerved, people were asking, What s going on here? Who is this? The parade crowd answered, This is the prophet Jesus, the one from Nazareth in Galilee. 1

JOHN 13:3-17 Jesus knew that the Father had put him in complete charge of everything, that he came from God and was on his way back to God. So he got up from the supper table, set aside his robe, and put on an apron. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, drying them with his apron. When he got to Simon Peter, Peter said, Master, you wash my feet? Jesus answered, You don t understand now what I m doing, but it will be clear enough to you later. Peter persisted, You re not going to wash my feet ever! Jesus said, If I don't wash you, you can t be part of what I'm doing. Master! said Peter. Not only my feet, then. Wash my hands! Wash my head! Jesus said, If you ve had a bath in the morning, you only need your feet washed now and you re clean from head to toe. My concern, you understand, is holiness, not hygiene. So now you re clean. But not every one of you. (He knew who was betraying him. That s why he said, Not every one of you. ) After he had finished washing their feet, he took his robe, put it back on, and went back to his place at the table. Then he said, Do you understand what I have done to you? You address me as Teacher and Master, and rightly so. That is what I am. So if I, the Master and Teacher, washed your feet, you must now wash each other s feet. I ve laid down a pattern for you. What I ve done, you do. I m only pointing out the obvious. A servant is not ranked above his master; an employee doesn t give orders to the employer. If you understand what I m telling you, act like it and live a blessed life. MATTHEW 26:31-46 Then Jesus told them, Before the night s over, you're going to fall to pieces because of what happens to me. There is a Scripture that says, I ll strike the shepherd; helter-skelter the sheep will be scattered. But after I am raised up, I, your Shepherd, will go ahead of you, leading the way to Galilee. Peter broke in, Even if everyone else falls to pieces on account of you, I won t. Don t be so sure, Jesus said. This very night, before the rooster crows up the dawn, you will deny me three times. Peter protested, Even if I had to die with you, I would never deny you. All the others said the same thing. Then Jesus went with them to a garden called Gethsemane and told his disciples, Stay here while I go over there and pray. Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he plunged into an agonizing sorrow. Then he said, This sorrow is crushing my life out. Stay here and keep vigil with me. Going a little ahead, he fell on his face, praying, My Father, if there is any way, get me out of this. But please, not what I want. You, what do you want? 2

When he came back to his disciples, he found them sound asleep. He said to Peter, Can t you stick it out with me a single hour? Stay alert; be in prayer so you don't wander into temptation without even knowing you're in danger. There is a part of you that is eager, ready for anything in God. But there s another part that s as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire. He then left them a second time. Again he prayed, My Father, if there is no other way than this, drinking this cup to the dregs, I m ready. Do it your way. When he came back, he again found them sound asleep. They simply couldn t keep their eyes open. This time he let them sleep on, and went back a third time to pray, going over the same ground one last time. When he came back the next time, he said, Are you going to sleep on and make a night of it? My time is up, the Son of Man is about to be handed over to the hands of sinners. Get up! Let s get going! My betrayer is here. LUKE 22:54-62 Arresting Jesus, they marched him off and took him into the house of the Chief Priest. Peter followed, but at a safe distance. In the middle of the courtyard some people had started a fire and were sitting around it, trying to keep warm. One of the serving maids sitting at the fire noticed him, then took a second look and said, This man was with him! He denied it, Woman, I don't even know him. A short time later, someone else noticed him and said, You re one of them. But Peter denied it: Man, I am not. About an hour later, someone else spoke up, really adamant: He s got to have been with him! He s got Galilean written all over him. Peter said, Man, I don t know what you re talking about. At that very moment, the last word hardly off his lips, a rooster crowed. Just then, the Master turned and looked at Peter. Peter remembered what the Master had said to him: Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times. He went out and cried and cried and cried. 3

LUKE 23:23-35 But they kept at it, a shouting mob, demanding that he be crucified. And finally they shouted him down. Pilate caved in and gave them what they wanted. He released the man thrown in prison for rioting and murder, and gave them Jesus to do whatever they wanted. 33-35 When they got to the place called Skull Hill, they crucified him, along with the criminals, one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them; they don t know what they re doing. LUKE 23:48 All who had come around as spectators to watch the show, when they saw what actually happened, were overcome with grief and headed home. JOHN 19:24-27 While the soldiers were looking after themselves, Jesus mother, his aunt, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene stood at the foot of the cross. Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her. He said to his mother, Woman, here is your son. Then to the disciple, Here is your mother. From that moment the disciple accepted her as his own mother. 4

JOHN 19:38-40 After all this, Joseph of Arimathea (he was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, because he was intimidated by the Jews) petitioned Pilate to take the body of Jesus. Pilate gave permission. So Joseph came and took the body. Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus at night, came now in broad daylight carrying a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. They took Jesus body and, following the Jewish burial custom, wrapped it in linen with the spices. 5

Communion under Special Circumstances Book of Alternative Services Rite ALLEGORIES OF HEAVEN Brothers and sisters in Christ, God calls us to faithful service by the proclamation of the word, and sustains us with the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ. [Hear now God s word, and] receive this holy food from the Lord s table. A passage of Scripture may be read All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. A priest says, Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People Amen. The peace of the Lord be always with you. People All And also with you. As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The gifts of God for the People of God. People Thanks be to God. Following the Communion, this doxology may be said People All People All your works praise you, O Lord. And your faithful servants bless you. Gracious God we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring life to others; we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
