St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Sung Evening Prayer Commemorating the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation: Sunday 29 October, 2017 6pm WELCOME Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, the home for worshippers from more than two dozen nations, the seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia and the home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. Whether you belong to the Anglican or Uniting Church or are from another Christian Church or faith tradition, you are most welcome to take part in tonight s service. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. Parts of this evening s service will be sung by the Ntaria Choir from the Northern Territory, directed by David Roennfeldt a very warm welcome to the choir members and their guests. Please join us in saying those parts of the service printed in bold type. Please ensure that mobile phones and other devices are switched off. INTRODUCING THE NTARIA CHOIR Our community is 125 km west of Alice Springs. It has two names: Ntaria, and Hermannsburg. It was settled in 1877 by German missionaries, and they soon established a bilingual school. Singing was a popular subject. Parts were taught to community members by the teacher's wife in the 1920s. Since then there have been a variety of choirs: adult, youth, and children's. In the last 6 years our choir has contributed members to the Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir. In an era when our language is being lost by younger generations, our choir sings in the mother tongue language as much as possible: Western Arrarnta. Please join in singing with us in our language, as indicated in this evening's service.
ORDER OF SERVICE THE WELCOME The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane Please sit as the Ntaria Choir sing Kum ba ya in Western Arrarnta. Please join in with the last verse as indicated. Kum bay ya, my Lord, kum bay ya; kum bay ya, my Lord, kum bay ya; kum bay ya, my Lord, kum bay ya; O Lord, kum bay ya! The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane says: Grace, mercy and peace, from God the Father, and Jesus Christ our Lord. Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit: as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1.2 The day is now past and the night is at hand. Let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen. Please remain seated as the Choir of St Paul s Cathedral sings PSALM 46 Chant: after Martin Luther (1483-1546) 1 God is our hope and strength: a very present help in trouble 2 Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be moved: and though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea. 3 Though the waters thereof rage and swell: and though the mountains shake at the tempest of the same. 4 The rivers of the flood thereof shall make glad the city of God: the holy place of the tabernacle of the most Highest. 5 God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed: God shall help her, and that right early. 6 The heathen make much ado, and the kingdoms are moved: but God hath shewed his voice, and the earth shall melt away. 2
7 The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8 O come hither, and behold the works of the Lord: what destruction he hath brought upon the earth. 9 He maketh wars to cease in all the world: he breaketh the bow, and knappeth the spear in sunder, and burneth the chariots in the fire. 10 Be still then, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be exalted in the earth. 11 The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our refuge. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Please be seated for THE READING Romans 3 : 19-28 Canon Rick Tudor A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans: 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, irrespective of law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Here ends the second lesson. All stand as the Cathedral Choir sings 3
THE MAGNIFICAT Evening Service Collegium Regale Herbert Howells (1892-1983) The Song of Mary, St Luke 1.46-55 My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Remain standing and say together THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. Please be seated for 4
THE PRAYERS Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. THE LORD S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen. THE COLLECT FOR TODAY Almighty and everlasting God, give to us the increase of faith, hope and love; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us to love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Cathedral Choir sings THE ANTHEM Like as the hart - Herbert Howells (1892-1983) Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, so longeth my soul after thee, O God. My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God. When shall I come to appear before the presence of God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they daily say unto me Where is now thy God? Please remain seated or kneel for THE INTERCESSIONS THE GRACE The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, evermore. Amen. The Ntaria Choir sings 5
HYMN IN WESTERN ARRARNTA Translation: 1 Jesus you befriended me. Out of your great love you died for me. I then give you my heart, totally. 2 Jesus, my friend, I'm close to you. Held by your hands, Jesus, I will abide with you. Jesu, Nyuntunkunitjun 3 Because of my wrong, I am not strong. Give me strength to listen to you. Open my eyes to hear. 4 Jesus, you are truly my friend and healer. I in return call on you, to listen. I'm always glad of heart as I walk with you. THE NOTICES Please stand to sing COLLECTION HYMN 2 No strength of ours can match his might. We should be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who may this be? The Lord of Hosts is he, Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God s only Son adored. He holds the field victorious. 3 God s word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they to cause distress, take all that we possess, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The Kingdom s ours for ever!
