Sacrificial Giving The more frequently we are generous, the more frequently we will find our faith strengthened and our hope rekindled. HUDSON Regular Offertory Last Weekend (Feb. 26)... $5,843.00 GERMANTOWN Regular Offertory Last Weekend (Feb. 26).. $1,476.00 Seminarian Support....... $ 45.00 Utilities.. $ 10.00 cannot get to the nearest market nearly five miles away to buy and sell food. If the waters do not recede quickly, their rice fields fail, and their animals become sick from diseases spread through dirty water. The family faces financial danger. That s why CRS is helping the Singh family prepare for flooding with new farming tools and techniques. Now Raj plants his fields worry-free using a special type of rice that can survive flooding. He can collect and save his seeds for future use. And he now has the resources he needs to vaccinate his cows, ensuring they, too, survive the floods. Megha grows vegetables in a kitchen garden, so her family has healthy meals even when she can t visit the market. During past floods, the family had to survive solely on rice. But now, planting veggies in special sacks, she is able to raise the plants above flood lines, ensuring her family has reliable access to nutritious food. Just as important, Megha has learned new ways of growing food, so that the entire family gets the most nutrition out of every meal. Now, the whole Singh family is healthier, and with these new ways of farming, they can continue to thrive, even during floods. Through your Lenten contributions to Operation Rice Bowl, you will be helping an untold number of struggling people like the Singh family find a better way of life. Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, Mar. 12 th On Saturday, March 11 th, next weekend be sure to set your clocks forward one hour.

Our 2017 Bishop s Appeal How one office serves: Office of Lay Ministry Formation YANKEE CANDLE SALE Fundraising for National Catholic Youth Conference Paying for Bus Fare! Begins March 11 th Twelve high school students in our parish, have committed this entire year to working hard to earn their way to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis in November, an event that our young people in the past have called life changing. Along with our monthly Banana Bread Bakes, we are also offering a Yankee Candle Sale beginning on March 11th and ending March 26th. Thanks to our wonderfully supportive parishioners (YOU!), this sale has always been a great success, and will, with God's good grace, pay our bus fair to Indianapolis. The Office of Lay Ministry Formation provides education and formation for the laity who are called and gifted to serve in various ministries in their parishes such as pastoral care of the sick, outreach to the poor, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, faith formation, youth ministry and more. Through its programs, workshops, and major events, this office provides opportunities for a solid grounding in Sacred Scripture, theology, and ministry skills as well as personal enrichment in faith - on both an initial and ongoing basis. In 2016 54 people from 41 parishes were enrolled in the Kateri Institute for Lay Ministry Formation at regional sites in Albany, Queensbury, and Troy. 15 people from 23 parishes completed the Kateri Institute for Lay Ministry Formation and received the Blessing for Those who Exercise Pastoral Service from Bishop Scharfenberger during the celebration of the Eucharist at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Over 300 people from every county in the diocese participated in the annual Autumn Diocesan Gathering in October. Please continue to help us provide this service by supporting the Bishop s Appeal. We are SO grateful to you all for your overwhelming support of our Banana Bread Bakes and our Gingerbread Sale the teens are truly humbled by the outpouring of love and encouragement that you continue to give them. Please, if you can, consider taking a Yankee Candle packet on March 11th or 12th and sharing it with friends and/or relatives. All orders placed will arrive in time for Mothers Day. WARM, FRESH-FROM-THE-OVEN, BANANA BREAD! Next Sale is the Weekend of March 18th & 19th Bring your $5! Thank you SO much for your support with these monthly sales! Our February bake netted a profit of $1006! We are SO grateful to you for the enthusiastic response to this sale! We will continue to attempt to fill the Church with the aroma of Banana Bread on March 18 th & 19 th to tempt your taste buds! Our teens will be busy baking on Saturday afternoon of that weekend and again, bright and early, at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning! Thank you SO much for being so kind! Need your Rosary repaired? A parishioner has decided for her Lenten observance to repair broken Rosaries. If you have a Rosary that is damaged in any way, we invite you to place it in the collection basket during Lent. Put your Rosary in an envelope with your name, address, and telephone number on it. After the Rosary is repaired, we will contact you and arrange for your repaired Rosary to be returned to you.

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 5, 2017 We re 80% way there! We still need 8 more beds Lebanon Valley College Choir HOST FAMILIES NEEDED! On Saturday, April 1, the Lebanon Valley College Choir of Annville, PA, will be visiting our parish to sing at our 4 pm Vigil Mass and to present a wonderful concert at 7:30 p.m. the same evening in our beautiful Church. I am sure it will be an evening to be remembered for a long time! Our parish is responsible for hosting these 56 college students for the evening of April 1. Host responsibilities are: 1) bring the students to your home after the concert on Saturday night 2) provide a place for them to sleep--a couch, pillow, and a blanket are perfectly acceptable 3) feed them breakfast in the morning 4) return them to the Church on Sunday morning I need, at least, 20 host homes. The Choir Director asks that hosts agree to take at least 2 students, with 3 or more even better, i.e. they discourage a host home taking only one student. My own family has hosted over 30 students in our lives and we have truly wonderful memories of each special time. I need to have my list of host homes finalized by March 1. If we do not have host families for these students, they will find hotel lodging; but this really stretches the budget thin for this wonderful ministry group. Please check your calendars and see if you are available to help with this request on Saturday, April 1 st. Please contact me at: home - 851-3688 e-mail - maura.nedwell@gmail.com Facebook Message - Religious Ed Thank you, A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar In today s Gospel Jesus cautions it is not enough to provide food for our children; one does not live on bread alone. Let Lent 2011 be a time when you are led by the Spirit to explore new ways to be a moral guide to your children Reflections on today s Scriptures The First Sunday of Lent He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. And no surprise! That's an incredibly long time to fast. Undoubtedly Jesus' physical and emotional strength would have been extremely weak after enduring such a marathon of abstinence. And isn't it interesting that the tempter should choose to appear at this particular moment? When bread must have sounded better than ever, the devil comes and tests Jesus, saying, Command that these stones become loaves of bread. How hard it must have been to resist! Surely, Jesus could have caved in. He could have shown the devil his power and had a bite to eat while he was at it but he didn t. Instead, Jesus relied upon the word of God, and battled the devil by holding fast to the truth. One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. What an excellent model this provides for us. We too face temptation of various kinds and degrees. As the first reading from Genesis reminds us, the cunning serpent has been slithering around humanity from the beginning of time. Even when we have all that we need, the devil makes us want more, or want different, than what we have. Today's Gospel calls Satan the tempter for good reason. He tempts us to break God s law as Adam and Eve did when they ate from the tree in the middle of the garden. But Jesus shows us the right response by battling the devil with the truth of God s word. Whatever temptations might beset us, there is power in clinging to the truths that we find in Scripture. In our moments of trial, may we have the strength to claim these truths as our own and, like Jesus, defeat the deceit of the devil.
