EXTENSION ACTIVITIES FOR OLDER STUDENTS: Create a chral reading f the hymn. Create a special arrangement f the hymn, utilizing vcal r instrumental sls r ensembles, etc. Create a skit telling the stry f the hymn writer r the circumstances under which the hymn was written. Children f the Heavenly Father Carlina Wilhelmina Sandell Berg (1832-1903) Carlina Wilhelmina Sandell was a big name fr a little girl, s she was given the nickname Lina. Lina was brn in Sweden where her father was a minister in the Lutheran church. As a yung girl, she culdn t get ut f bed fr a lng, lng time. She was partially paralyzed but dctrs didn t knw why. The dctrs did nt think she wuld ever get better. The stry is tld f hw she began reading her Bible and praying ne Sunday mrning while her parents were at church. She read the Bible stry abut Jesus raising Jairus s daughter frm the dead and thught, Gd culd d that fr me! S she prayed that Gd wuld heal her and was suddenly made well! She gt up and dressed and was walking arund the huse when her parents came hme. They were astnished! (One versin f the stry says that after her healing she walked t her parents church. Either way, it s an amazing stry!) She published her first bk f pems when she was nly 16. These expressed her feelings abut Gd. When she was a yung wman, Lina s father drwned when they were n a bat trip tgether. That was a terrible experience fr her. Only tw years later, her mther died. S she went t live with family in anther city. There she met the king s sister, Princess Eugenia, and ther prminent peple. Sn she fund happiness with Oscar Berg, whm she married. He was a wealthy businessman. They had a baby by but he died during childbirth. Lina Sandell wrte ver 600 hymns. Oscar Ahnfelt is the reasn many f them are s well-knwn. He wrte music fr many f her pems and sang them, accmpanying them n his ten-string guitar, fr peple all thrugh Scandinavia. Lina said, Ahnfelt has sung my sngs int the hearts f the peple. Jenny Lind, a famus pera singer f the time, als sang Lina s sngs in her cncerts and paid t have them published. Lina was s famus and her music s influential that she was called the Fanny Crsby f Sweden. She was 70 years ld when she died in 1903. Fifty years later, mre than 10,000 peple in her hmetwn hnred her by attending the dedicatin f a brnze statue erected as a memrial t her. Lina Sandell Berg s hme is nw a museum.
