Handling Aright The Word of God - 2 Tim. 2:15 Intro: A. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NKJV) ---- 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. B. What does it mean to handle aright the Word of God? II. What Are Some Things that Hinder One from Rightly Dividing the Word of God? A. Character Issues: 1. A love for the world 1 John 2:15-17; Prov. 23:23 a. 1 John 2:15-17 ---- 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.16 For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world.17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. b. Proverbs 23:23 ---- 23 Buy the truth, and do not sell it, Also wisdom and instruction and understanding. 2. A love for unrighteousness 2 Thes 2:9-12; Ps 119:97-104 a. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 ---- 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. b. Psalm 119:97-104 ---- 97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. 101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. 102 I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. 3. Pride and a lack of respect for God s word Isa. 66:2; Prov. 1:7 a. Isaiah 66:2 ---- 2 For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist, Says the LORD. But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word. b. Proverbs 1:7 ---- 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. B. Approach Issues: 1. Thinking that we can t (For clergy only; mysticism; have to have Holy Spirit to help) - Eph. 3:3-5; 5:17 b. Ephesians 5:17 ---- 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 2. Preconceived ideas (To defend what we already believe) - Mat 15:7-9; Rom 10:1-3 a. Matthew 15:7-9 ---- 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. b. Romans 10:1-3 ---- Brethren, my heart s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.3 Page 1 of 5

For they being ignorant of God s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 3. Ignoring Context (many false doctrines) John 3:16; 6:44,45; 1 Cor. 1:17; Rev. 20:4 a. John 3:16 ---- 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. b. John 6:44-45 ---- 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. c. 1 Corinthians 1:17 ---- 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. d. Revelation 20:4 ---- 4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 4. Ignoring the type of language used (Literal or figurative? Apocalyptic literature) Gen. 1,2; Rev 1:1 a. Revelation 1:1 ---- The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, 5. Ignoring the different ways terms are used (spirit; soul; one; baptism) Gen. 1:20,30; Num. 31:28; Mark 12:29-31; 1 Cor. 12:13; Rom. 8:16 a. Genesis 1:20,30 ---- 20 Then God said, Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens. 30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food ; and it was so. b. Numbers 31:28 ---- 28 And levy a tribute for the LORD on the men of war who went out to battle: one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep; c. Mark 12:29-31 ---- 29 Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is: Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.30 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment.31 And the second, like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. d. 1 Corinthians 12:13 ---- 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. e. Romans 8:16 ---- 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, III. What Are Some Things that Help One in Rightly Dividing the Word of God? A. Character Issues: 1. Right attitude (Isa. 66:2; Prov. 1:7) a. 2. Love for truth (2 Thes 2:10-12) a. 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 ---- 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,12 that they all may be Page 2 of 5

condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 3. Honesty (Luke 8:15; Acts 17:11,12) a. Luke 8:15 ---- 15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience. b. Acts 17:11-12 ---- 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. 4. Common sense (Eph 5:17) a. Ephesians 5:17 ---- 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. B. Approach Issues: 1. Trust (2 Tim. 3:16,17; John 17:17) a. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ---- 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. b. John 17:17 ---- 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 2. Hunger (Matt. 5:6; 1 Pet 2:2) a. Matthew 5:6 ---- 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. b. 1 Peter 2:2 ---- 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3. Expectation (Eph 3:3-5) 4. A desire to obey it (John 7:17) - 17 If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. a. Psalm 119:97-104 - 97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. 101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word.102 I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. b. Proverbs 2:1-7 ---- My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, 2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; 5. Open minded (Acts 8:34; 17:11,12; James 1:21) a. Acts 8:34 ---- 34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man? Page 3 of 5

c. James 1:21 ---- 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 6. Examine context (Psalm 119:160; Prov. 30:5; 2 Tim. 3:16) a. Psalm 119:160 ---- 160 The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever. b. Proverbs 30:5 ---- 5 Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. c. 2 Timothy 3:16 ---- 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 7. Understanding the terms as they are used in the context (Eph 3:3-5) 8. Recognizing the difference between figurative and literal language (Rev. 1:1; Gen. 1,2) a. Revelation 1:1 ---- The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, 9. Recognizing that the Bible doesn t deal with everything specifically 10. However, the scriptures provide the principles where every important question can be answered (2 Tim. 3:16,17; Heb. 5:12-14; 2 Pet 3:16) a. Hebrews 5:12-14 ---- 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. b. 2 Peter 3:16 ---- 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 11. Knowledge of historical circumstances and customs (John 13:14; 1 Thess. 5:26) a. John 13:14 ---- 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. b. 1 Thessalonians 5:26 ---- 26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. (1) Using accurate translations (2) Using commentaries (3) Using Lexicons and dictionaries (4) Using concordances (5) Using cross references - 12. It is not always easy to come to the correct understanding of a passage or passages (parables, revelation, some writings of Paul, etc.) a.
