A LETTER FROM YOUR L E A D P A S T O R Dear Friends, The Methodist movement has always had an emphasis on a warm-hearted faith coupled with service to others. Our vision at Dayton UM Church, Know Christ, Grow Faith, Go Witness, emphasizes the warm-hearted faith of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, growing deep in that faith and expressing that faith in witness and service to the broken world around us. On May 24, 1738, John Wesley had a revolutionary experience in his faith. Wesley attended a group meeting on Aldersgate Street, in London, that evening. Someone read from Martin Luther s preface to the Book of Romans. In his journal for that day, Wesley wrote: "While he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death." Followers of Jesus Christ in the Wesleyan movement, including we United Methodists, have sometimes celebrated Aldersgate Sunday on the Sunday closest to May 24 to remember this historic date and the experience of assurance that changed the trajectory of Wesley s life and ministry. Out of this very personal assurance of faith, Wesley organized a movement that cared for the physical needs of the poor in England (and later in America) and offered them Christ. During May here at Dayton UM Church, we will focus on the life implications of faith in Jesus in our worship series, Living Faith, which is based on the Biblical Book of James. We will offer an opportunity for public profession of faith in Christ through Baptism on Sunday, May 13. Then on May 20 we will receive new members into the church. Anyone who is interested in being baptized is invited to call the church office (765-296-3155) or email me (mike.dominick@daytonumc.org). Please indicate your desire to be baptized by April 2, so we have time to have a conversation about the meaning of baptism and to record your video testimony for the Baptism Service. I thank God for my own heart-warming experience of faith when I asked Jesus into my life at 15 years of age. I thank God for many more heart-warming experiences of deeper commitments over the years. And I thank God for those who will be baptized and received into membership this month! To God be the Glory! Pastor Mike 2 DaytonUMC

A LETTER FROM YOUR CHILDREN S PASTOR Hello! I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for all the love and support while I served in the Children s Pastor role for the past 2 years and 3 months. God has done amazing things in our Children s ministry. We have seen over 100 commitments to Jesus through all the kid s ministries, had many children publicly profess their faith through baptism, and have seen several lives changed as kids follow Jesus. I m so thankful to have someone like Theresa be stepping in to lead our Children s ministry. Rest assured your children are in Great hands!! Her passion and love for kids and Jesus will be a great fit to keep the ministry going strong, and to help it move into even more! Many of you have reached out and shared kindness, and I want to say thank you. Your words have been a blessing to me. I have also been asked what our plans are as a family. DUMC is our church home. We will continue to serve and worship here every week as we have done for the last several years. I will still serve as a volunteer in Children s ministry, and will rejoin the worship team. My wife and sons will continue to serve in the capacities they are in now, and we are excited about the future here at DUMC. God is on the move, on the move hallelujah! Thank you for giving me the chance to teach, mentor, and share Jesus with your children. They blessed me far more than I could ever hope to bless them. Keep your eyes on Jesus, roll your sleeves up and serve Him where He is working, and praise His name every day. Be blessed and be a blessing, Pastor Eric Bailey W E E K LY Orange Children s Ministry Sunday mornings during the 9:30 and 11:00 services in The Shop K I D S C H O I R Contact Beth Plybon or the church office if your child would like to join kids choir! BLESS THE PRISONERS THROUGH KAIROS Kairos is the prison ministry arm of the Great Banquet/Walk to Emmaus. A team goes into the Westville prison and presents a Great Banquet style weekend to the prisoners. Many have found new life in Jesus Christ through Kairos! Kairos also operates support ministries for the families of those who are incarcerated, and mentoring for incarcerated offenders under age 25. There are several ways you can help with this ministry. One way, of course, is to pray! You can also serve on a team. Another way is to bake cookies for a weekend. Kairos has an approved recipe to follow for donating home baked cookies. Since the cookies will be taken into a prison, there are some very rigid requirements that must be followed. EVERY cookie is inspected before it is allowed in the facility, and any that are oversized, broken from shipment, or stuck together must be removed. The no-no s for Kairos cookie preparation: Do not add icing, powered sugar or any topping or coating on the outside of the cookie. Do not use pre-made, dry, refrigerated or frozen cookie dough. Do not use butter or margarine (use shortening). The ones made with butter and margarine break easily. Do not bring bought or no-bake cookies. Do not use raisins or nuts. The impact of agape love felt from homemade cookies is overwhelming when the inmates realize the sacrifice of time in mixing and baking cookies from scratch. Please bake only chocolate chip cookies. Indiana Department of Corrections request cool-pack-freeze. Freeze cookies flat and pack 6 per quart sized zip lock bag (with no plastic zipper) in a sturdy cardboard box for transporting. Mark the number of bags in the box. Basic Cookie Dough (makes 5 dozen) 1 cup shortening (not butter) 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla 2 1/2 cups flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder 2 1/2 cups chocolate chips Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Sift dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Beat in vanilla. Add chocolate chips. Drop onto cookie sheet by spoonful's. Bake at 350 degrees until medium to dark brown (from 13-20 minutes). Cookies should be 2 inches in diameter (size of Pringles lid). The cookie recipe can be downloaded from the Kairos of Indiana web site. The key indredient is PRAYER. Pray individually or as a family over the ingredients before and during mixing. Pray over the cookies as you drop them onto the cookie sheets and bake them. Ask God to use your cookies as a source of His love to shine on the prisoners and staff on the Kairos weekend. Pray that each cookie brings the inmate, officer or warden who eats it closer to God. We want every person to become a part of the family of God. Label your cookies on the outside KAIROS and bring them to the church.
