Welcome! Holy Communion Time after Pentecost August 19, 2018 9:30 a.m. Christ Lutheran Family of Faith Cottonwood, Minnesota Balancing Act Prelude Call to Worship GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. Wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome here. Words of Welcome P: This is the day that the Lord has made, C: let us rejoice and be glad in it. Community Announcements and Opportunities to Offer Ourselves Please stand as you are able. Confession and Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. P: Gracious God, C: have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Gathering Hymn Gather Us In - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [532] Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. Prayer of the Day P: Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, C: so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our will, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; and then use us, we pray, as you will, but always to your glory and the welfare of your people, through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Please be seated. WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. New Testament Reading Ephesians 5: 15-20 15 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 So do not be foolish, but understand -2-

what the will of the Lord is. 18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20 giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. L: Word of God, word of life. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand as you are able. Gospel Acclamation Halle, Halle, Hallelujah - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [172] Gospel Reading P: The Holy Gospel according to John, the sixth chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53 So Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated. Sermon Pastor Janel Kuester Hymn of the Day Lord, Be Glorified - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [744] Please stand as you are able. Profession of Faith (The Apostles Creed is found inside the back cover of the hymnal.) Prayers of God s People The congregation will respond to the prayer petitions with, hear our prayer. -3-

Sharing of God s Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. Please be seated. Offering Please stand as you are able. MEAL Offertory Prayer A: Let us pray. God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Great Thanksgiving P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Words of Institution Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Invitation to Communion P: Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Please be seated. God feeds us with the presence of Christ. -4-

Anyone who has communed elsewhere is welcome to commune here. Those who do not yet commune are invited to come forward for a blessing. Grape juice and gluten free bread are available upon request. Please come forward at the invitation of the ushers to receive communion in a continuous manner, then return to your seats via the side aisles.
