We are kicking off another exciting year. This time of year always brings back memories of my own school days. The sacrifices my parents made to send their kids to Catholic schools were sometimes great, but they knew it was worthwhile. There is still a great value in Catholic schools in our area, and I am happy to say our school will have over 260 students attending. We are gearing up for another school year, preparing children for their sacraments and helping them learn and grow in their faith. We have new teachers brimming with excitement about their new classrooms and schoolchildren. Please pray for our schoolchildren, teachers, and families as we embark on another year at St. Cecilia School. For those families whose children do not attend Catholic school, please look at the parish website for more information on our PREP program for religious education and sacramental preparations. Contact Cody Egner with any questions at cegner@eastsideregion.org. I hope to be more involved in our PREP and EDGE programs this coming school year. Amen? Amen! Thank you, Lord, for the gift of time for growing and learning, and for the gift of Catholic education. Inspired by St. John Bosco, we thank you for our faith and for those who offer themselves at the service of our Catholic faith with their very lives and in their vocations. Amen. pa s t o r s r a m b l i n g s 4 2 Thank You for the Prayers and Support: Dear parishioners of the pastoral region, thank you for your cards (photo 1), well wishes and flowers you sent me after the unexpected heart procedure I had to have. I was overwhelmed by the support and wishes, and very grateful for the prayers and all the help that they could offer. I had a second precedure done a week after my hospital stay and have just taken a week off to recover from that. I would love your continued prayers as I make my way back to full strength. 1 Young Adult Brunch: We had a very beautiful day for our Young Adult Group s brunch and iced coffee on Aug. 5. Although I couldn t join them, it was very uplifting seeing and hearing the crowd from my window. Everyone said the food was delicious and the iced coffee was perfect for a warm summer day in the St. Joseph garden (photo 2). 1 Thank You, Keith: Over the past couple of months, I have been working with Keith (photo 3) to restructure our Music Ministry at St. Margaret-St. John Parish. After much prayer and discussion, Keith and I decided that he will no longer serve our parish as the Director of Music. His final Mass in this role will be August 26. There will be more information in next week s bulletin about the future changes to our music ministry. While Keith will no longer be our music director, he plans on still being very active in the parish as a substitute musician and participating in all of our social gatherings. I want to thank Keith for the many, many years of dedicated service to the parish. He is truly a great musician and we will miss him! I wish him great peace and success in his service at Wayne Local Schools. 1 Farewell, Daniel! Last weekend Msgr. Lane prayed over Daniel Sanchez-Guerrero (photo 4) at his last Mass at St. Anthony and in our region. Daniel is a college seminarian who is now returning to school. I have really enjoyed getting to know Daniel and was so impressed with his dedication and hard work. I feel like all of the parishes were given the gift of his presence, his infectious smile and fun spirit. I ll never forget when he jumped out of the Bid-n-Buy room in a polar bear outfit and scared the devil out of me! (... which is good) 1 Congratulations! Jefrey and Stephanie Obert (photo 5) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage at their convalidation on Aug. 4. Stephanie is an alumnus of St. Cecilia. She and her family have been longtime parishioners. Samantha Bramlage and Miguel Alfaro (photo 6) also celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on Aug. 4. 1 Welcome, Children of God: Welcome to Josie Rosemary, daughter of Eric and Jaime Fry, and to Avery Grace, daughter of Eric and Rebecca Ebersole. Josie and Avery were baptized Aug. 5 (photo 7). 4 5 6 7

A Letter from Keith Minnery Dear St. Margaret-St. John parishioners, Although it s been decided by our leadership to move into a new direction regarding the music ministry, I respect this decision. This parish has served as my second home and its parishioners as my second family since 2002. Even though I will no longer serve as your music director, I will plan on attending parish social events and looking forward to keeping up to date with everyone and will still be around. As much as I loved my job here, this change will also help me focus on my full-time position as the choir and drama teacher at Wayne Local Schools. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I will do the same for you. Eastside Faith 6 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 A Summer with the Saints Saint Gregory the Great ~ Patron of Choristers and Singers Gregory was born in the year 540. He was the son of a wealthy Roman senator; his mother was St. Silvia. Gregory s father sent him to the best teachers. He was always humble. Gregory was prefect of Rome for one year. Then he sold all his property and used the money to build six monasteries in Sicily and one in Rome, where he went to live as a monk. He continued his kind deeds to help the needy. One day he saw some slave children being offered for sale near the Roman Forum. One person said they were Angles from England, Gregory replied, Not Angles, but Angels shall they be. The true Faith must be brought to them. Obtaining permission from the Pope, he began his journey as a missionary to England. The people of Rome later asked the Pope to recall him. After Gregory was elected Pope, he sent St. Augustine and a company of monks to England in 597. He also sent missionaries to France, Spain, and Africa. Pope Gregory is called a Doctor of the Church because of the many books he wrote, especially on the liturgy of the Mass and the Office. He made wise laws to govern the Church. He died in the year 604. O God, You look upon Your people with compassion and rule them with love. Through the intercession of Pope St. Gregory, give wisdom to the leaders of Your Church that the growth of Your people in holiness may be the everlasting joy of our pastors. PREP Catechists Needed! focus on J ustice 7 Before the challenges of contemporary movements of migration, the only reasonable response is one of solidarity and mercy. A response less concerned with calculations, than with the need for an equitable distribution of responsibilities, an honest and sincere assessment of the alternatives and a prudent management. A just policy is one at the service of the person, of every person involved; a policy that provides for solutions that can ensure security, respect for the rights and dignity of all; a policy concerned for the good of one s own country, while taking into account that of others in an ever more interconnected world. It is to this world that the young look. Homily of His Holiness, Pope Francis, at the Holy Mass for Migrants, July 6, 2018 Together in Christ: Saying Yes to Missionary Discipleship On Saturday, September 8, from 9 AM to noon, members of our Eastside Region parishes, Church of the Nativity, Christ the King and St. Vincent Ferrer are invited to gather in the cafeteria at Nativity (5935 Pandora Ave, 45213) for a morning of prayer, celebration and encounter, rooted in Pope Francis message in The Joy of the Gospel. You can register to attend this event at www.eventbrite.com. Email csa@catholiccincinnati.org, and ask to be put on the action alert email list. NOTE: Beginning on Sunday, September 2, the Mass schedule at St. Anthony will change back to the school season schedule of 8:30 and 11:30. Be sure to mark your calendar! Habitat House, Madisonville The 2018 Habitat for Humanity build site in Madisonville is right around the corner from St. Anthony Church at 6003 Sierra Street (two lots from the corner of Sierra and Ward). The Madisonville Coalition is a group of about 10 churches who staff the Saturday volunteer rosters on a rotating basis. These churches rotate working on Saturdays. There is also a Wednesday Crew, an eclectic group of (mostly) retirees with varying levels of construction skills. Anyone who is free on Wednesdays and interested in participating is welcome to join them. St Anthony parishioners Mark McCarthy and Joe Scheid have been volunteering and would be happy to tell you more about the project.
