The Rev. F. Mark Walters, Pastor I Give You My Hand Do we realize what a gift we are receiving and giving when we "share the peace" in church? When we take the flesh of our neighbor's hand into our own and say "Peace be with you" we are holding a hand that has been somewhere. It may be tiny and smooth, it may be big and calloused, but it is part of a body and a life and it has a story. No matter whom it belongs to, it has seen good days and bad; it has given "high fives" and wiped away tears, just like our own hands. In putting those hands together, and saying the words that Jesus said to his frightened disciples "Peace be with you" we give each other the gift of faith. We remind each other that the risen Christ is with us. We practice resurrection. With those hands we lift each other up, and show by our own scars that we understand. And then we extend those hands at this table and receive Christ in bread and wine. Just as he did for Thomas, Christ places his wounded body into our hands a body which is now risen and gives life to the world. In the prayer of the day for the second Sunday of Easter, we ask God to "enable us to show the power of the resurrection in all that we say and do." None of us can give our neighbor proof of the resurrection. We cannot force people's emotions or use logic to explain the mystery of faith. But we can offer our hands. We can listen. We can walk together on the journey from fear to freedom and know that through each other's hands and feet, Christ walks with us. From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2015 Augsburg Fortress. Today we gather with the disciples on the first Easter, and Jesus breathes the Spirit on us. With Thomas we ask for a sign, and Jesus offers us his wounded self in the broken bread. From frightened individuals we are transformed into a community of open doors, peace, forgiveness, and material sharing such that no one among us is in need. *Indicates standing, if able ANNOUCEMENTS PRELUDE + GATHERING + CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. P Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who calls us beloved children, who gathers us into one flock, who guides us into all truth. C Amen. P Let us confess our sins, trusting that God will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence is kept for reflection. P C St. Andrew s Evangelical Lutheran Church Second Sunday of Easter 425 North DuPont Highway Dover, DE 19901 Faithful and just God, we confess that we are captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We have not loved our sisters and 3

brothers as you have first loved us. Forgive us, God of mercy. Let your Holy Spirit work in us to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the abundant life given in Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. P C In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent the Son to atone for our sins. In the name of + Jesus Christ, I announce to you that your sins are forgiven. Let the perfect love of God cast out fear, fill you with joy, and inspire you to live for others. Amen. *GATHERING SONG Blessed Assurance 1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. Refrain This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior, all the day long: this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. 2 Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Refrain 3 Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. Refrain Text: Fanny J. Crosby, 1820-1915 *GREETING P Arise, shine; for your light has come. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 4

C And also with you. *CANTICLE OF PRAISE Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee 1 Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love! Hearts unfold like flow rs before thee, praising thee, their sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the gloom of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day. 2 All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heav n reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flow ry meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird, and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee. 3 Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, wellspring of the joy of living, ocean- depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our brother, all who live in love are thine; teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine! Text: Henry van Dyke, 1852-1933 *PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. Almighty God, A brief silence is kept before the prayer. C with joy we celebrate the day of our Lord's resurrection. By the grace of Christ among us, enable us to show the power of the resurrection in all that we say and do, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The assembly is seated. 5

CHILDREN S SERMON Pastor Mark + WORD + FIRST READING Acts 4:32 35 The earliest Christians lived as one body, caring for those in need, and holding all things in common. 32 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. 33 With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. 35 They laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 133 How good and pleasant it is to live together in unity. A C A 1 How good and how pleasant it is, when kindred live together in unity! 2 It is like fine oil upon the head, flowing down upon the beard, upon the beard of Aaron, flowing down upon the collar of his robe. 3 It is like the dew of Hermon flowing down upon the hills of Zion. For there the LORD has commanded the blessing: life forevermore. SECOND READING 1 John 1:1 2:2 When we walk in God s light we have fellowship with one another. Chapter 1 We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have 6

heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life 2 this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us 3 we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; 7 but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Chapter 2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION 7

P C The holy gospel according to John the 20th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. *GOSPEL John 20:19 31 Thomas recognized Jesus by his wounds. 19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." 24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." 26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." 28 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" 29 Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. *NICENE CREED C We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Congregation Response C Have mercy, O God. 11

COMMUNION (Please be seated) MAY I TAKE COMMUNION? As Lutheran Christians we believe the words of Jesus, This is my body, this is my blood given for you and for the forgiveness of sin. If you desire this gift, we welcome you to commune with us. All who do not commune may come forward for a blessing. We serve wine and grape juice. If you prefer the latter, it is available on the Ushers tray. The Ushers will direct you when and where to proceed to the altar for communion. Please return to your seat by use of the side aisles. 16

Parents are also encouraged to bring non- communing children forward for a blessing. We encourage all who commune to fill out a Communion Card. Please hand it to an Usher as you come forward. Members of a family may be entered on one card. COMMUNION SONG 17
