Habitat for Humanity Outreach: you will notice an envelope in your tithing packet for April to contribute to our local Habitat for Humanity in Owensboro. We will also have envelopes available in the pews later to take up a second collection in May. Our goal this fiscal year for our parish of Saint Stephen Cathedral is to contribute $3,000.00. If you would like to be part of our parish "hands-on" work, contact Mark Heinz mrheinz@gmail.com. A marvelous opportunity for us! II. Day of Prayer for Vocations: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is a question we often hear. Perhaps a better question is, "What does God want you to be when you grow up?" Sunday, April 17th, we focus on praying for all vocations, but especially for vocations to priesthood and religious life; that those called will say a resounding YES! III. Medical Mission Trip: Dr. Phil and Mary Beth Hurley spent Spring Break in Haiti. They have asked for prayers for Fr. Rick Frechette, who is the Director of Saint Luc' Foundation in Haiti; returning from a funeral, Fr. Rick was in a serious motorcycle accident on April 5th. Phil Hurley accompanied Fr. Rick to a trauma hospital in Miami to recuperate. Mary Beth was able to be "part of caring for many Haitian people who received orthopedic surgery by a team of doctors and healthcare workers from the USA. The Haitian people are so grateful and I feel blessed to be a small part of helping them." I ask your prayers for those who care for the less fortunate, and for Fr. Rick Frechette. IV. Ministry to Divorced Persons: on Saturday, April 23rd, Bishop Medley will celebrate 9:00 a.m. Mass at Saint Stephen Cathedral for persons struggling with the darkness and pain of a failed marriage. The new Diocese program Rebuilding After Divorce, will host Catholic author, Rose Sweet, who will speak about the Churches teachings and sharing hope and a little humor. Join her at Sts. Joseph & Paul Parish, on Friday evening, April 22nd, at 6:30 p.m. Invite your friends and family! V. Miracles Do Happen! I'm not referring to the miracle of Fr. Suneesh choosing Villanova AND North Carolina in his bracket for the NCAA final game! Is that crazy or what? I'm talking about the fact that the annual priests moves and changes are out; Fr. Suneesh Mathew Kulathanapadikel was not transferred or moved! Miracles do happen! He will have to put up with me a while longer! I'm glad! VOCATIONS BEGIN AT HOME! The family that cultivates a missionary spirit in its lifestyle and in education itself prepares good soil for the seed of the Divine call and, at the same time, strengthens the loving ties and Christian virtues of its members. The Christian family, as the domestic church forms the original and fundamental school for training in the faith. Pope Saint John Paul II WHAT IS A VOCATION? The word vocation means literally a calling, and a divine calling is a call from God. So why does God call us, and to what does He call us? He calls us to Himself, because He has made us for Himself. This call to unite ourselves with God is necessarily a call to holiness, because God Himself is holy, and if we are to see Him face to face one day, we must be like Him (see 1 John 3: 2-3)... Each of these paths, these callings from God, is also a divine vocation. Each vocation has its own special role to play in the Church, because we are called not just to become holy ourselves, but also to help others on their way home to God. www.vianneyvocations.com In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

When announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis focused on Jesus lost sheep parable in Luke. [Who] among you, Jesus asks, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? (Luke 15:4). A reasonable answer? No responsible shepherd who wants to keep the job! Yet Jesus considers one lost person supremely important and suggests blaming the shepherd. The sheep didn t go astray, the shepherd lost it. Thus, when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy (15:5). That tender image of Jesus adorns the simple cross Pope Francis has always worn, the Good Shepherd gently carrying the lost sheep home on his shoulders. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, may we, who once were lost ourselves but now are found, join Jesus in seeking, finding, and gently carrying home at least one precious lamb. FAITH FORMATION NEWS! Christian Initiation We continue our prayers for our newly initiated members, the neophytes, as they grow in their understanding of the Mysteries of Faith. Please keep them in prayer. Perhaps you know someone who has expressed interest in you as a Catholic. Invite them to come and learn more about Catholicism. There is an open-door to all who are casually curious, seriously seeking or firmly committed to becoming Catholic. Now is an excellent time to inquire. Our RCIA process is a year-round experience. It does not have a beginning or ending date, like a school year calendar. RCIA meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the parish Media Center. On April 20 th we continue the period of Mystagogy as the neophytes spend time reflecting on the many blessings of the Easter event in their lives and talk about The Two Great Commandments. Come share your faith and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270/852-8424, or donna.murphy@pastoral.org. Prayer Shawl Ministry We have revived the St. Stephen Cathedral Prayer Shawl Ministry. This compassionate outreach in our community is open to anyone who can or is willing to learn to crochet, knit, weave or sew and would be willing to share your talents and resources with those in need of comfort during an illness or loss. We will meet on the Third Wednesday of each month (this Wednesday, April 20 th ) at 3:00 pm and the First Tuesday of each month (May 3 rd ) at 10:00 am, in the Media Center. You can also contribute to this ministry by providing yarn. Contact Donna Murphy, 270/852-8424, or donna.murphy@pastoral.org for specifics regarding yarn or for more information about this ministry. Celebration of First Eucharist Ten younger members of our faith community are in the final stages of preparation for receiving their First Holy Communion on Sunday, April 24 th at the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Please remember them in your prayers! May Procession and Coronation of Mary Our May procession will follow the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 1 st. Those who are not attending the 9:00 a.m. Mass can join us near the grotto at 10:00 a.m. For more information, contact Donna Murphy, donna.murphy@pastoral.org or 270/852-8424. 2016 Vacation Bible School A successful Vacation Bible School program depends on good volunteers. Volunteers are needed within the coming weeks to plan for this year s Vacation Bible School. We will have a planning meeting on Tuesday, April 26 th at 6:30 pm in the Media Center. If you are interested in this fun, faith-filled week, please contact Donna Murphy, 270/852-8424.

Mark 12:44 THE SHEPHERD S FLOCK In Christian art, the earliest depictions of Jesus Christ were not of his crucifixion or of his resurrection. The first known renderings of Jesus show him as the Good Shepherd, the image put before us in today s readings. In the Gospel passage Jesus reveals that he is the shepherd and his followers are his flock. In the first and second readings, we are told more about the flock. The passage from Acts assures us that both Jews and Gentiles are called to follow Jesus. It is faith, not birthright, that makes us part of the company of believers. In the passage from the book of Revelation we learn that the flock that follows this Lamb of God will also be washed in his blood. They will endure a time of trial before they enjoy eternal life. Be assured of the promise, we are told, but know there is a price to be paid. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Forming Good Stewards Good stewards are formed by other good stewards! The Father and I are one. After comparing his disciples to sheep who know the voice of their shepherd and saying that they know his voice and he knows them, Jesus assures those who follow Him that they will have eternal life. He then adds that The Father and I are one. Today s passage can only be understood when read in the context of the whole of Chapter 10 of John s Gospel. Jesus uses many images of the care and concern of the shepherd for the sheep, and the total dependence of the sheep on their shepherd. They were images the disciples were very familiar with because herds of sheep with their shepherds were everywhere. In fact, they are still very common in the Holy Land today. But the message of Jesus in Chapter 10 of St. John s Gospel is: If you believe in me, if you do as I do and imitate my care and concern and love for you, by loving one another, then my Spirit is in you. If my Spirit is in you, then you and I are one, just as the Father and I are one. Is not union with God, Father, Son and Spirit, what we are all seeking? I am very proud of all our wonderful youth who came last Sunday for the service project with the local Habitat for Humanity. They painted, planted, and did other yard work. Even though it was raining, they were glad to serve. Thanks to Mark Heinz for giving us this opportunity to work with Habitat. Thanks to Dcn. Dirck Curry and Brenda Clark for driving the kids and for their supervision. Thanks to Chrissy and John Kurtz for providing pizza and vegetables for the youth group. All the youth will gather this Sunday, the 17th, at 6:00 p.m. at Youth House. Bring a friend with you! God bless you all. Fr. Suneesh Serve the Lord with gladness! YOUTH GROUP NEWS!
