Prelude Welcome Hymn Please stand O Worship the King 3 4 O wor ship the King, all glo rious a bove; O grate ful ly sing his power and his love, our Shield and De fen der, the An cient of days, pa vi lioned in splen dour and grid ed with praise. O worship the King, all glorious above; O gratefully sing his power and his love; our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of days, pavilioned in splendour and girded with praise. O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; his chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm. The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, Thy power hath founded of old; hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain. 3

Introduction Call to Worship 4 & b œ j œ œ œ œ œ œ j œ œ œ œ œ œ O God you are my God, my soul thirsts for you; for your &b œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ j œ œ œ œ Œ lo-ving kind-ness is bet-ter than life it-self. My lips shall praise your name. O God you are my God, my soul thirsts for you; for your loving kindness is better than life itself. My lips shall praise your name The Collect for Purity Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Almighty God, to whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Two Great Commandments Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Celebrant: Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these your laws in our hearts. 4

The Collect of the Day Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Merciful God, by whose gift alone your faithful people offer you true and acceptable service, grant that we may serve you faithfully so that we do not finally fail to obtain your heavenly promises, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The First Reading Please be seated 2 Corinthians 15: 12-14, 35-43 12 But tell me this since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead? 13 For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 35 But someone may ask, How will the dead be raised? What kind of bodies will they have? 36 What a foolish question! When you put a seed into the ground, it doesn t grow into a plant unless it dies first. 37 And what you put in the ground is not the plant that will grow, but only a bare seed of wheat or whatever you are planting. 38 Then God gives it the new body he wants it to have. A different plant grows from each kind of seed. 39 Similarly there are different kinds of flesh one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are also bodies in the heavens and bodies on the earth. The glory of the heavenly bodies is different from the glory of the earthly bodies. 41 The sun has one kind of glory, while the moon and stars each have another kind. And even the stars differ from each other in their glory. 42 It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. 43 Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength. Reader: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

Gospel Hymn Please stand The head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now; a royal diadem adorns the mighty Victor s brow. The highest place that heaven affords is his, is his by right, the King of kings, and Lord of lords, and heaven s eternal Light; The Gospel Reading Please remain standing Mark 8: 31-36 Reader: Hear the Gospel of our Saviour Christ, according to Mark chapter eight beginning at verse thirty-one. Glory to you, O Lord. 31 Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead. 32 As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. 33 Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. Get away from me, Satan! he said. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God s. 34 Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 35 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. 36 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Gospel Hymn Please remain standing 6 The joy all of all who dwell above, the joy of all below, to whom he manifests his love and grants his Name to know.

The Nicene Creed Please remain standing Celebrant: Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Celebrant: Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man. Celebrant: Do you believe and trust in the saving work of Jesus Christ? For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Celebrant: Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Hymn Please remain standing Will You Come and Follow Me Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let me name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? 7

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me? Will you love the you you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you ve found to reshape the world around, through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I ll move and love and grow in you and you in me. Sermon The Invitation The Rev. Sandra Seaborn You can also listen to the sermon again online at stpaulsbloor.org. The Offertory The Offertory provides an opportunity to regularly contribute to the work of God, as expressed through St Paul s. You can give by: putting contributions in the offering plate that is passed around, setting up preauthorized giving, or giving online using either our website or app. Thank you for your generosity. 8

Offertory Anthem Please remain seated When the Stars Fall When the sea shakes, then I trust my Saviour. When the sea breaks, still I trust my Saviour. And if the sea crumbles into rust, tumbles into dust, yet I will trust my Saviour. Stephen Hatfield When the stars call, then I trust my Saviour. When the stars fall, still I trust my Saviour. And if the stars crumble into rust, tumble into dust, yet I will trust my Saviour. When my heart sighs, then I trust my Saviour. When my heart cries, still I trust my Saviour. And if my heart crumbles into rust, tumbles into dust, yet I will trust my Saviour. Offertory Prayer of Thanksgiving Please stand as the offering is presented Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. The Prayers of the People Please sit or kneel to pray Each prayer will end with this response: The time of prayer will end with this response: Leader: Leader: Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Merciful Father, Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Exhortation & Invitation Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Celebrant: You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from this day forward in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and take this holy sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to almighty God. 9

The Confession Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all, we acknowledge and confess our many sins, which we have committed by thought, word, and deed, against your divine majesty. We earnestly repent, and are truly sorry for all our misdoings. Have mercy on us, most merciful Father. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake forgive us all that is past, and grant that from now on we may always serve and please you in lives wholly renewed by your Spirit, to the honour and glory of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. God s forgiveness is declared: Celebrant: Almighty God our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all who turn to him with heartfelt repentance and true faith: have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Celebrant: Listen to our Lord Jesus Christ's words of assurance to all who truly turn to him: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11: 28 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 The apostle Paul says: Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1: 15 The apostle John also says: If anyone does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defence- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 2: 1-2 10

Celebrant: The Lord be with you and also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is indeed right, our duty and joy, that we should always and everywhere give thanks to you, O Lord, holy Father, mighty Creator, and eternal God. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with the whole company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you, and singing: Choir: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to you, O Lord most high. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Prayer of Consecration Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Celebrant: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there, by his once and for all offering of himself, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted and in his holy gospel commands us to continue a perpetual memorial of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we who receive this bread and wine according to your Son Jesus Christ s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood. 11

On the night that Jesus was betrayed he took bread and, when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Accept through Jesus Christ, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of your life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Prayer of Humble Access Please remain sitting or kneeling to pray Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not even worthy to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord who delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat this bread and to drink this wine, that our bodies and souls may be cleansed by Christ s body and blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. 12

The Lamb of God Choir: O Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. O Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. O Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. The Communion Communion Hymn All who are baptized in any Christian Church and seek to follow Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour are invited to receive the bread and the wine. Please come forward and kneel or stand at the rail. To receive the bread, hold out your hands, crossed with palms up To receive the wine, hold the bottom of the cup and guide it to your mouth For health reasons, dipping the bread in the wine is not permitted. Jesus, Stand Among Us Jesus, stand among us in thy risen power; let this time of worship be a hallowed hour. Breathe the Holy Spirit into ev ry heart; bid the fears and sorrows from each soul depart. Thus with quickened footsteps we ll pursue our way, watching for the dawning of eternal day. Music During Communion All for Jesus All for Jesus - all for Jesus, This our song shall ever be; For we have no hope, nor Savior, If we have not hope in thee. Thomas Bell All for Jesus - thou wilt give us Strength to serve thee, hour by hour, None can move us from thy presence, While we trust thy love and power. 13

All for Jesus - at thine altar Thou wilt give us sweet content; There, dear Lord, we shall receive thee In the solemn sacrament. All for Jesus - thou hast loved us; All for Jesus-thou hast died; All for Jesus - thou art with us; All for Jesus crucified. All for Jesus - all for Jesus - This the Church s song must be; Till, at last, we all are gathered One in love and one in thee. The Lord s Prayer Please sit or kneel to pray Prayers After Communion Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty and everliving God, we thank you with all our hearts for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. We acknowledge your love and care for us in making us members of his mystical body, the blessed company of all faithful people, and heirs of eternal life. And here we offer and present ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a holy and living sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen. Celebrant: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen Announcements Please be seated 14

Hymn Please stand Fill Thou My Life, O Lord My God 3 4 6 Fill thou my life, O Lord my God, in ev ery 10 part with praise, that my whole be ing may pro claim thy be ing and thy ways. Fill thou my life, O Lord my God, in every part with praise, that my whole being may proclaim thy being and thy ways. Praise in the common things of life, its goings out and in; praise in each duty and each deed, however small and mean. Fill every part of me with praise: let all my being speak of thee and of thy love, O Lord, poor though I be and weak. So shall each fear, each fret, each care, be turned into song; and every winding of the way the echo shall prolong. So shall no part of day or night unblest or common be, but all my life, in every step, be fellowship with thee. Dismissal Please remain standing Postlude Choir: Go forth in the name of Christ.
