DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Christmas Eve Service of Carols and Holy Communion December 24, 2007 Five-thirty in the evening Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Dawn, by Eric Gill, 1929 Christmas is the festival at which Christians celebrate the birth of the Christ child in Bethlehem 2000 years ago. This fragile infant long awaited and yet still a surprise is the incarnation of God on earth. As we share gifts with our friends and family this season, we try to capture the joy and wonder around the original gift of Christmas God, who out of his lavish abundance came to a broken world to dwell among us and draw us to him.

DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Duke Chapel is a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus; and it is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. We welcome you to our life of worship, learning, dialogue, and service. www.chapel.duke.edu Box 90974, Durham, NC 27708 919-684-2572 FOR WORSHIPERS & VISITORS Prayer requests may be placed in the prayer box located by the Memorial Chapel. There will be no tours of Duke Chapel after services today. Hearing assist units and a Braille hymnal are available at the attendant s desk at the entry way of the Chapel. See the Chapel attendant if you would like to use one of our large-print Bibles or hymnals for the worship service this morning. FOR FAMILIES & CHILDREN Children aged 4 and younger are welcome to visit the nursery (capacity limited), located in the Chapel basement, beginning at 10:50 a.m. each Sunday morning. Pagers are available for parents to keep with them during worship. Parents needing a place to feed, quiet or change infants are also welcome. Activity Bags are available at the rear of the Chapel for children five or younger. Please return the bags at the end of the service. Children s bulletins are available from the ushers. We invite you to consider joining the Congregation at Duke Chapel. The Congregation is an interdenominational church with a variety of vibrant ministries, including discipleship and spiritual formation (for children, youth, and adults), mission and outreach, and pastoral care. If you are interested in making Duke Chapel your home church, contact the Rev. Nancy Ferree-Clark at 684-3917. www.congregation.chapel.duke.edu STAFF OF DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL The Rev. As we hear your word this evening, grant that in his light we may see light. Bestow upon us that most excellent Christmas gift of love to all people, so that the likeness of your Son may be formed in us, and that we may have the ever brightening hope of everlasting life. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (The congregation responds to each petition: Hear our prayer. ) OFFERTORY ANTHEMS Huron Indian Carol Traditional French arr. Jill Ann Jones Twas in the moon of wintertime when all the birds had fled; The mighty Gitchimanitoo sent angel choirs instead. Before their light the stars grew dim And wondering hunters heard the hymn: Refrain: Jesus your King is born, in excelsis gloria. Within a lodge of broken bark the tender babe was found. A ragged robe of rabbit skin enwrapped his beauty round. The chiefs from far before him knelt With gifts of fox and beaver pelt. O children of the forest free, O sons of Manitoo, The holy Child of earth and heaven is born this day for you. Come, kneel before the radiant boy Who brings you beauty, peace, and joy. Fr. Jean de Brébeuf Angels! Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o er the plains, And the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains. Refrain: Gloria in excelsis Deo! French Carol arr. Ken Berg Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What glad tidings be which inspire your heav nly song? Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing; Come adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King! See Him in a manger laid, him whose birth the angels praise; Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, while our hearts in love we raise! *DOXOLOGY Gloria in excelsis Deo! (Repeat refrain as needed.) GLORIA THANKSGIVING AND COMMUNION *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (The presiding minister will sing the text in regular type, and the congregation will stand and sing the text in bold type.) Our Lord God is with us, lift your hearts and voices high, let us give thanks to the Lord everywhere and at all times:

God, all glory be to you at this blessed Christmas time, for the gift of your own Son, born a poor child, peasant King. For the love you sent to us, for the life he shared with us, for the sacrifice he made, Lord of lords, and King of kings. On the night he was betrayed the Lord Jesus took the bread, blessed and broke it as he said, Take and eat, this is my flesh. After supper, took the cup, gave you thanks, and giving said, Drink this cup, it is my blood, poured for you and everyone. When we eat this holy bread, when we drink this holy wine, we his presence sense anew, and his victory await. We remember and proclaim what your Son has done for us, in his life and in his death, as he rises and ascends. Now accept our sacrifice as surrender of ourselves. Send your Holy Spirit down on us here and on our gifts. Help us through this bread and wine know the presence of our Christ. Make us one with him today and with humankind, we pray. *THE LORD S PRAYER (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) SHARING OF THE BREAD AND WINE All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. ANNOUNCEMENTS ADVENT WREATH The Advent Wreath is made possible by the Elizabeth Lucina Gotham Memorial Endowment, established by Dr. and Mrs. James H. Semans in loving memory of Elizabeth Gotham. The wreaths on either side of the front entrance of the Chapel and the interior decorations are given to the glory of God in celebration of the Christmas season by Dr. and Mrs. James G. Ferguson, Jr. ABOUT TODAY S GUEST CHOIR The Durham Children s Choir is an auditioned chorus of children ages 8-13, in grades 3-8 in the Durham area. The choir was founded in the spring of 2004 by its conductor and artistic director, Scott Hill. The prelude selection for today, The Lamb, was commissioned for the Durham Children s Choir and the Duke University String School. For more information on the choir, see the website at www.durhamchildrenschoir.org. CHRISTMAS EVE OFFERING In May 2004 an eleven-person group coordinated by the Congregation at Duke Chapel conducted a mission trip to Haiti with Family Health Ministries. The purpose of the trip was to lay the foundation for the first and still the only medical clinic in the city of Blanchard, population 225,000. Many who now live in the community fled the violence of Cité Soleil, which is the poorest slum in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The Blanchard Family Health Clinic continues to exist due to the generous offerings from the Chapel s Christmas Eve services, tonight being the fifth annual collection. The 2003 offering of $10,809 enabled the clinic s foundation to be built, and the $27,000 contributed over 2004 and 2005 was used to help complete the first phase of the building, which opened December 2006. The $19,754 offering last year paid all the salaries of the Haitian-run clinic staff a physician, two public health workers, a nurse, an administrator, a pharmacist, and a janitor. Ongoing funding is crucial to continue to address the unmet need of access to affordable healthcare, health education, and disease prevention. The residents of Blanchard have minimal access to acute care, sanitation, potable water, simple nutrition, family planning, and immunizations. Tonight, in the name of the Holy Infant who was born into poverty 2000 years ago, we hope to raise an additional $20,000 for staff salaries for 2008. HAITI MISSION TRIP The Congregation at Duke Chapel in conjunction with Family Health Ministries is planning a mission trip to Haiti October 11-19, 2008. If you would like to participate, please contact Dave Allen, Missions and Outreach Coordinator, at daveallen5@gmail.com. SERMONS AVAILABLE Copies of tonight s sermon are available in the communication stands at either side of the narthex, just inside the front doors of the Chapel. A downloadable PDF, podcast, and webcast of sermons each week are available on our website, www.chapel.duke.edu.
