MAUNDY THURSDAY/TENEBRAE SERVICE April 17, 2014 7:00 PM The Shadows of the Cross PRELUDE MUSIC WELCOME Angie Bemiss Rev. Dr Tim Rogers-Martin EXPLANATION OF THE TENEBRAE MUSIC OF PREPARATION Sarabande and Two Variations from Suite HWV 437 String Quartet LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES Georg Friedrich Handel Nancy Fowler CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: O come and mourn with me awhile; O come to the Savior s side; People: O come together, let us mourn; Jesus, our Lord, is crucified! Leader: O love of God! O sin of all! In this dread act, your strength is tried; People: Jesus, our Lord, is crucified! Jesus, our Lord, is crucified! HYMN # 92 Beneath the Cross of Jesus ST. CHRISTOPHER CONGREGATION AND CHOIR Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand; the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land, a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day.

CHOIR ONLY Upon the cross of Jesus, mine eye at times can see the very dying form of one who suffered there for me; and from my smitten heart with tears, two wonders I confess: the wonders of His glorious love and my unworthiness. CONGREGATION AND CHOIR I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, my sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 52:13-53:12 Dr. Rogers-Martin RESPONSE Like As The Hart Chancel Choir; Teresa Fleenor, Organ Herbert Howells Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, so longeth my soul after Thee, O God. My soul is a thirst for God, yea, even for the living God. When shall I come to appear before the presence of God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy God? Psalm 42 vss 1 3 INVITATION TO THE TABLE WORDS OF INSTITUTION Rev. Jennifer McGee Rev. McGee & Rev. Rogers-Martin

PRAYER OF APPROACH Rev. Ralph Bronkema Leader: Bring the offerings to the King. Bring the gold, bring the jewels, bring all that you have to Your King. (pause) What? You bring nothing? You have nothing to offer this man, this man who has spent His life preaching the word, healing the sick, loving the unloved, and giving hope to the poor? Surely you have something to repay this King. People: We bring no gold or jewels to this man; we do not stand for Him or recognize Him. Leader: What? How can you say you do not recognize Him, when not a week ago, you were all shouting praises of Hosanna, Hosanna, Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord? Come forth and praise Him now so that the world can see that this is the so-called King of the Jews and that you are a Christian. People: this man. We will not stand as Christians, and we do not understand all that you say. We do not know Leader: Will you not come and stand with this man and therefore be crucified with Christ, the Lamb of God, the Messiah, YOUR Prince of Peace? Will you not live the life He taught... Will you not even acknowledge that you have been with Him, and you deny that you have heard His message? People: We do not know this man. Leader: Then come. Come and bring your nails to the cross. Your nails of lethargy toward Christ, your nails of un-committedness to the call. Bring your nails for sins of wrongdoing and your sins of laziness to do what is right. Also, bring a nail for the desire to sin that you will give into tomorrow. Come and drop your nail at the foot of the cross and find yourself a part of the crucifixion. OFFERING OF THE NAILS and COMMUNION Fugue in G minor from The Well-Tempered Klavier Dido s Lament from Dido and Aeneas String Quartet Dr. Rogers-Martin Johann Sebastian Bach Henry Purcell

THE TENEBRAE Shadow of Desertion and Forsakenness Mark 14:26-42 Rev. McGee Response Reflection: Thy Will Be Done Carl Nygard Jr. Chancel Choir; Teresa Fleenor, Piano; Amy Jevitt, Violin O Lord, I am not worthy that You should come to me; Yet I ask Your holy presence and your love in my time of need. And humbly I ll receive You in the heart which You have won; Unafraid, yet still unworthy to repeat, Thy will be done. O Jesus, You have promised to be with us when we pray; That when two or more are gathered in Your name, You are with us always. And gladly we ll receive You, One-In-Three, yet Three-in-One; You who showed the simple power in the prayer, Thy will be done. May the peace of Christ be with us in our time of want and need; May His guiding Holy Spirit keep us close to the word of our creed. Ever humble to receive You, Father, Spirit, Holy Son, Ever blessed, yet ever unworthy, we repeat, Thy will be done. Silent Prayer: Lord, even as we run away into the night we can look back and behold the Lamb of God, the Lamb for sinners slain, a perfect sacrifice for all being led to suffering and death. Are You betrayed even for me who in so many things betray You? Shadow of Betrayal Matthew 26:47-56 Dr. Rogers-Martin Response Drop, Drop Slow Tears Phillip Stopford Chancel Choir; Teresa Fleenor, Organ; String Quartet Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet Which brought from Heaven the news and Prince of Peace: Cease not, wet eyes, His mercy to entreat; To cry for vengeance sin doth never cease. In Your deep floods drown all my faults and fears; Nor let His eye see sin, but through my tears. Silent Prayer: Lord, we were afraid. We sat with You in the synagogue; we lived with You, learned from You, walked with You, loved You, and yet, in this moment of fear and doubt we ran away leaving You alone...

Shadow of Mockery Mark 14:53-65; 15:16-20a Rev. McGee Response What Wondrous Love Is This Mark Patterson Chancel Choir; Teresa Fleenor, Piano; String Quartet What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul? When I was sinking down, sinking down! When I was sinking down beneath God s righteous frown, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul. To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing! To God and to the Lamb who is the great I AM, While millions join the theme, I will sing. And when from death I m free, I ll sing on! And when from death I m free, I ll sing and joyful be, And through eternity I ll sing on. What wondrous love is this? Silent Prayer: Lord, how easily I fall away. Even now with the rest of the night and Friday so graphically clear as the anthem rings in my ears... what wondrous love... to bear the dreadful curse... for my soul. This is for my soul, and I cannot stay awake... Shadow of Denial Mark 14:66-72 Dr. Rogers-Martin Response Kyrie Antonín Dvorák/Ruth Elaine Schram Chancel Choir; Teresa Fleenor, Piano; Amy Jevitt, Violin Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Silent Prayer: How can we be so close and do nothing? How can we deny we know You, Lord? We are no better, no worse, than poor Peter. We were there, Lord, when You were crucified, nailed, pierced and we only watched.. Shadow of Cruelty Mark 15:2-5, 12-15, 21-25 Rev. McGee

Response Crucifixus Michael Larkin The Shadowed Words of the Cross Chancel Choir; Teresa Fleenor, Organ; String Quartet Crucifixus etiam pro nobis. (He was crucified for us) Surely He hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. All we like sheep have gone astray. And with His stripes we are healed. The First and Second Words Luke 23:32-43 The Third Word John 19:25-27 The Fourth Word Matthew 27:45-46 The Fifth and Sixth Words John 19:28-30 The Seventh Word Luke 23:44-46 Final Shadow Mark 15:37-39 Silent Moments of Reflection We ask that everyone remain seated at the close of the service, contemplating and meditating upon the death of Jesus on the cross. When the lights come on in the narthex, we ask that you leave in silence when you are ready. Return to church on the third day to celebrate Christ s resurrection. The Tenebrae is an old tradition in the Church of watching and waiting as Christ approaches and bears the cross. We begin with the light of the world among us, as symbolized by the Christ Candle on what was, during Advent, the advent wreath. Now, at His passion, a crown of thorns and a black shroud replaces the Advent wreath. The vestments will be stripped away from the pulpit as we mourn Christ s death. This service ends with even the Christ Candle, our reminder of the light of the world, being extinguished. As you leave, please notice the old rugged cross and the communion table shrouded in black, our symbol of suffering and shame. Sincere thanks to Angie Bemiss for sharing her musical talents for our pre-service music this evening. String Quartet Amy Jevitt, Paul Jackson, Susan Bearden and Joan Markstein
