how to receive christ 1. RECOGNIZE GOD S PLAN PEACE AND LIFE The message you have just heard stressed that God loves you and wants you to experience His peace and life. The BIBLE says... For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 2. REALIZE OUR PROBLEM SEPARATION FROM GOD People choose to disobey God and go their own way. This results in separation from God. The BIBLE says... For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 3. RESPOND TO GOD S REMEDY THE CROSS God sent His Son to bridge the gap. Christ did this by paying the penalty for our sins when He died on the cross and rose from the grave. The BIBLE says... But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 4. RECEIVE CHRIST AS LORD AND SAVIOR You cross the bridge into God s family when you prayerfully ask Christ to come into your life. The BIBLE says... But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12 HOW TO RECEIVE CHRIST 1. Admit your spiritual need. (I am a sinner.) 2. Be willing to turn from your sins (repent). 3. Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave. 4. Pray and invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit. (Receive Him as your Lord and Savior.) PRAYER OF COMMITMENT Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. In Your Name, amen. 2

salvation When you prayed, committing your life to Christ, what happened? Jesus said, Behold, I stand at the door and knock. I believe it... in my heart you have eternal life? that settles it... in my mind 3

lesson one: salvation Salvation means deliverance from sin and its consequences. Review and meditate on these truths until you can say with confidence, I know I am a Christian... I have been born into God s family as His child... I now have eternal life. 1. Circle key words and phrases in the following Scriptures. Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. PHILIPPIANS 2:5 8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ROMANS 5:8 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. 1 CORINTHIANS 15:3 4 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. EPHESIANS 2:8 9 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not 22

of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. JOHN 1:12 13 * For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. JOHN 3:16 2. In the above Scriptures, what do we learn about (answer briefly on the following page): JESUS CHRIST (Philippians 2:5 8) SALVATION (Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3 4; Ephesians 2:8 9) BECOMING GOD S CHILD (John 1:12 13) ETERNAL LIFE (John 3:16) 3. Memorize John 3:16. NOTES: 23

how to be sure you have eternal life If you have committed your life to Christ, what does this guarantee? The BIBLE says... For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. john 3:16 1. If you believe in Christ, what can you know with certainty? I have. Jesus says... My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father s hand. john 10:27 29 2. What are you promised? I give them. And they will. No one will them out of my. No one is able to them out of my Father s. How do you know... I know because... that you have eternal life? God said it... in His Word, the Bible you will never perish? I believe it... in my heart you are safe in God s hand? that settles it... in my mind 4

how to come back to christ If you have failed in following Christ and you are sorry and ready to come back to Him, what must you do? 1. Confess your sins. The BIBLE says... If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 john 1:9 What must we do to be forgiven? What does God say He will do if we confess? Confess means to agree with God. (i.e., I lied, I cheated, I was unkind, I lost my temper.) Right now be specific with God silently confess your sins to Him. 2. Surrender your life to God s control. The BIBLE says... The BIBLE says... I can do all things through [Christ] who strengthens me. philippians 4:13 What can you do with God s help? What is it that God gives to us? He. How do you know... I know because... you are forgiven? God said it... in His Word, the Bible you are cleansed? I believe it... in my heart you are restored? that settles it... in my mind 5

for further help Jesus said, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. john 14:6 The BIBLE says... Ask others who are already Christians to help you. 4. Go to other groups and meetings arranged to help explain the Gospel, especially in the local church. REMEMBER... You can receive Christ at any time by praying a prayer similar to the one on the bottom of page 2. Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. matthew 7:7 8 God said it... in His Word I believe it... in my heart that settles it... in my mind 6
