THE DAY OF PENTECOST Perfect Communication June 7 & 8, 2014 AS WE GATHER In John 14, Jesus says, But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. The primary role of the Holy Spirit, then, is to teach us and remind us of all that Jesus said perfect communication. When Peter had confessed Jesus to be the Messiah, Jesus said immediately to Peter: the Son of Man must suffer many things... be killed, and on the third day be raised (Luke 9:22). Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. This is the word that the Holy Spirit reminds us of week after week in Scripture, hymns, preaching, and Holy Communion. It is this word of Jesus that brings us down a notch when we are arrogant and lifts us up when we are brought low by our sin. Christ, crucified for sinners and risen, is perfect communication. This is precisely what the Holy Spirit breathes into our ears. WELCOME "Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." Colossians 3:17 HANDSHAKES & HUGS + PREPARATION + PROCESSIONAL HYMN #503 "O Day Full of Grace" O day full of grace that now we see Appearing on earth s horizon, Bring light from our god that we may be Replete in His joy this season. God sine for us now in this dark place; Your name on our hearts emblazon. O day full of grace, O blessed time, Our Lord on the earth arriving; Then came to the world that light sublime, Great joy for us all retrieving; For Jesus all mortals did embrace, All darkness and shame removing. For Christ bore our sins, and not His own, When He on the cross was hanging; And then He arose and moved the stone That we, unto Him belonging, Might join with angelic hosts to raise Our voices in endless singing. God came to us then at Pentecost, His Spirit new life revealing, That we might no more from Him be lost, All darkness for us dispelling. His flame will the mark of sin efface And bring to us all His healing. When we on that final journey go That Christ is for us preparing, We ll gather in song, our hearts aglow, All joy of the heavens sharing, And walk in the light of God s own place, With angels His name adoring. 1 INVOCATION/OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: Alleluia! If anyone thirsts, People: let him come to Jesus and drink of the water of life. Alleluia! Pastor: Alleluia! Whoever believes in Jesus, People: out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. Alleluia! Pastor: Trusting the Holy Spirit to guide us, inspire us, comfort us, and enliven us, let us begin in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Lord God, we come into your presence today rejoicing in the gift of your Holy Spirit. Yet we also remember on this day the words of Jesus about the Holy Spirit: And when He [the Spirit] comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment. We stand before you as ones convicted by our sin. So even as we rejoice, we confess our sin to you, trusting in your promise to forgive us and to guide us by your Spirit to change our sinful ways. Our suspicion and caution towards the outpouring of the Spirit among us, Pastor: Our failure to live in ways consistent with the gifts of the Spirit, Pastor: Our timid refusal to speak of Christ to our friends and neighbors, Pastor: Our stingy neglect of those who are poor and downtrodden, Pastor: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Whoever believes in Jesus, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water! HYMN OF PRAISE Holy Spirit, Gift of God (Tune: LSB 900 Jesus! Name of Wondrous Love [Sts. 1, 5, 6, 4: HS98 835) Holy Spirit, Gift of God, Spread Your grace and peace abroad; Plant the seed of life in all Doomed to death in Adam s fall. Long before I knew Your name, In my heart You lit Your flame; By the Water and the Word My adoption was conferred. 2

CCLI license #1443048 SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Almighty Father, in the generous outpouring of your Spirit, you have communicated Christ, crucified and risen, into our ears and our hearts. By the same Spirit, enlighten us and guide us that the things we say and do may draw the whole world to Jesus. Let your promise be fulfilled that every knee may bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. To you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all glory now and forever. + WORD + OLD TESTAMENT READING Numbers 11:24 30 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again. However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and told Moses, Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp. Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses aide since youth, spoke up and said, Moses, my lord, stop them! But Moses replied, Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them! Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. EPISTLE Acts 2:1 21 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked; Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from 3 Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues! Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean? Some, however, made fun of them and said, They have had too much wine. Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd; Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. HOLY GOSPEL John 7:37 39 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #496 "Holy Spirit, Light Divine" Holy Spirit, light divine, Shine upon this heart of mine; Chase the shades of night away, Turn the darkness into day. Let me see my Savior s face, Let me all His beauties trace; Show those glorious truths to me Which are only known to Thee. Holy Spirit, pow r divine, Cleanse this guilty heart of mine; In Thy mercy pity me, From sin s bondage set me free. Holy Spirit, joy divine, Cheer this saddened heart of mine; Yield a sacred, settled peace, Let it grow and still increase. Holy Spirit, all divine, Dwell within this heart of mine; Cast down every idol throne, Reign supreme, and reign alone. SERMON "The Spirit Released and the Church Born" Acts 2:1-21 4

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Lord of life, on that first Pentecost day you poured out your Spirit upon all flesh. We rejoice that in Baptism, you have also poured your Holy Spirit upon us, forgiving our sins and saving us. People: Renew us with the Holy Spirit so that our tongues may continually sing your glory. Make us bold to open our mouths to proclaim your mercy and trust that you can use us to further Christ s kingdom. Pastor: Lord of the church, continue to pour out your Holy Spirit upon Matthew, our Synod president; John, our district president; Bud, our circuit counselor; and all pastors of the Church. People: Empower their words, that they may speak your Word. By the Holy Spirit, use them to call all people to repentance and faith in Jesus. Pastor: Light of this dark world, you have sent the Holy Spirit to your Church as the comforter. Soothe the wounds of your people, bring restoration to broken families, uplift the depressed, and uphold the forgotten. People: Lead us all by your Spirit day by day. Pastor: Almighty God, bring healing and wholeness to those who are sick and afflicted, especially those who have requested prayer: Mark, Richard, Roy, Carol, Susan, Virginia, Rosalie, Dorothy, Ruth, Warren, Dorothy, Sara and Joe. People: Heal them according to your will and grant them patience under trial and hope in the Lord. Pastor: Hope of every nation, in these last days, send your Spirit of wisdom upon our earthly leaders: our president, governor, and all elected and appointed officials who bear authority over us. People: Grant us to live in peace. Guard also those who protect us by serving in the armed forces. Preserve our freedoms of worship and speech, that your Word might go forth in our nation. Pastor: Father in heaven, every child is precious to you. Grant us to speak up for life. Grant your blessing upon a Place of Refuge ministry. People: Bless the upcoming LifeWalk, that all who participate would rejoice in life and support mothers who face difficult circumstances in life. Pastor: God of grace, we praise you that you continually draw people into Christ s eternal kingdom. We rejoice with the Dembowiak family as Ava Lee was baptized into Christ this weekend. People: Grant us all the joy of your salvation, the peace that comes from grace, and the desire to grow to know Jesus better throughout our earthly pilgrimage. Pastor: Father in heaven, you are the source of every good, precious, and perfect gift. We give you thanks for all your blessings, especially for Roger and Nancy celebrating 48 years of life together and Jerry and LuEva, who are thankful for the love and support of their family. People: Grant us all to count our blessings each and every day. Pastor: God of wisdom and knowledge, we give you thanks for all those who have graduated from St. Paul s Lutheran School as well as our high school and college graduates. People: We give you thanks for bringing them to this milestone and pray that they would continue to grow both mentally and spiritually all their days. Pastor: Advocate and Defender whose light never wanes, we bless you that on the great and magnificent day, you will raise all of the dead and give unto those who believe in Jesus eternal life. We remember with thanksgiving, Dennis Seifert, and all those who have gone before us and are at rest. People: Comfort those who mourn, and bring us all with them into the light that knows no darkness. Pastor: Spirit of unity and peace, as we approach the table of grace, make us of one heart, mind and confession. People: Fill our mouths with the forgiveness won by Jesus on the cross. Strengthen us with this holy meal, that we may continue to serve you faithfully. 5 6
