Dear Friends, This Monday, October 16, Bishop Dunne will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on 30 of our young parishioners. These young men and women have been preparing since first grade for this special time in their lives. Our teachers, for many years, have worked diligently to help our students learn about the life of Jesus Christ, the importance of receiving the Sacraments and how Confirmation is not a graduation but a sending forth. Go out to all nations Paragraph 455 of the ceremony of Bishops states: The ordinary minister of confirmation is the bishop. Normally a bishop confers the sacrament so that there will be a clearer reference to the pouring forth of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost: after the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit, they themselves gave the Spirit to the faithful through the laying on of hands. Thus the reception of the Spirit through the ministry of the bishop shows the close bond that joins the confirmed to the Church and the mandate received from Christ to bear witness to Him before all. During the Mass but before they are confirmed, the student candidates are asked to stand and Renew their Baptism Promises. They are stating as young adults that they reject Satan, believe in God, the Father, Creator of Heaven and Earth. They believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died and was buried, rose from the dead, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. They continue in stating that they believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting This is their faith, which they are proud to profess! Next is the imposition of hands. The Bishop, as in ancient Biblical times, raises his hands and bestows the Holy Spirit upon our sons and daughters. They are now anointed with the Oil of Chrism. They have now received the Holy Spirit in its fullness. They are Confirmed! They are changed! We now pray that they accept this wonderful gift from God and use it, as we are encouraged to use all God s gifts. He now sends them forth. As the Father has sent me, now I send you Fr. Grieco -2

DEACON LACHLAN Pope Francis will celebrate a Mass for All Souls Day this November 2 at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in the town of Nettuno, an hour s drive south of Rome. The Mass will be offered for all those who have died in war, the Holy See announced. This cemetery contains the graves of nearly 8,000 American soldiers killed in Italy during World War II. In July 1943, more than 100,000 Allied soldiers, many of them Americans, disembarked on the shores of Sicily; the city of Rome was taken in June of 1944, but the war in Italy would continue until May of 1945. The cemetery in Nettuno was declared a permanent war memorial at the end of the Second World War. There are a number of American Military Cemeteries throughout the world. I was privileged to visit the cemetery at Colleville sur Mer in Normandy, which overlooks Omaha Beach. The cemeteries are operated by a government agency called the American Battle Monuments Commission, and are considered part of the United States. All the cemeteries are open to the public, and are beautifully maintained. No one who visits these cemeteries is left untouched by the experience. It is very difficult to describe. I know that I felt sadness and a sense of gratitude. I also found the whole experience to be very humbling. More than 9,000 American servicemen are buried at Colleville sur Mer. Some of the graves are pictured here, and the picture below is a view of Omaha Beach from the cemetery. The other picture is of an inscription at the Visitor Center and is a quote from General Mark Clark. The inscription reads: If ever proof were needed that we fought for a cause and not for conquest, it could be found in these cemeteries. Here was our only conquest. All we asked was enough soil..in which to bury our gallant dead. May almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-
