Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Guidelines Page 3 of 7 The Most Holy Eucharist is the sacrament by which Jesus Christ shares Himself as God and as Man with everyone who receives Him: He offers himself to His heavenly Father as the most appropriate offering and invites every human being present to do the same. The faithful around the table are animated by the graces of the sacrament to growth in belief and understanding of God and so live a life ever so close to the intent of the Father. QUALIFICATIONS FOR BECOMING AN EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION Any confirmed Catholic adult of good moral standing (this includes a valid sacramental marriage in the Catholic Church) wishing to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion are welcome to sign up for this ministry. Training is required prior to serving at Mass. Meetings are scheduled by the ministry coordinators on a regular basis. All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are required to attend these seminars/workshops to acquaint them with their roles as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. In order to be properly disposed to receive communion, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, like all other Catholics, should not be conscious of grave sin and should have fasted for one hour. It is encouraged that all Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should in every way demonstrate by their reverence for the Holy Eucharist that they truly believe that this is not just bread and wine, but the very Body and Blood of the risen Lord. One should not accept this obligation of responsibility unless he or she is willing to carry it out with deep faith, and an awe inspired sense of God's presence. Your respectful silence, grace-filled movement, and care with the Sacred Species are observed by all the people. CLOTHING: The way a minister dresses conveys a message to the congregation and speaks about the importance of his/her ministry. Extraordinary ministers are asked to dress with modest clothing, no low cut, no mini skirt and no shorts. The schedule will be available in the church narthex and on the parish website www.stjamesparishrc.com. Also ministers who have email will receive a copy and those who do not will receive a copy by mail. All Ministers are responsible for being present at their scheduled time. If you are unable to attend, you are responsible to obtain a replacement. Upon arrival all Ministers will find the ministry schedule and check off their names indicating that they are present. All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should arrive 15 minutes before Mass begins.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Guidelines Page 4 of 7 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are asked to dress respectfully for this ministry. Men are to dress in a shirt with a collar and women should wear modest clothing. The receiver of Holy Communion should be taken in by Jesus he/she receives and not be distracted by the person who offers him/her Communion. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should sit near the front of the congregation and participate fully in the celebration of Mass. The Second Minister The Second Minister on the schedule will be responsible to ensure that all positions for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are filled, and if need be, recruit from the congregation if pre-assigned Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are missing. The Second Minister will also ensure that the family designated to bring the gifts to the altar is present and understands their responsibility. The Second Minister should be the first to arrive for Mass. MASS RESPONSIBILITIES The Extraordinary Minister at the Altar will be responsible to assist the priest in the preparation of the altar. Preparation of Ministers After the sign of peace all ministers shall proceed to the back of the church and meet at the Baptismal font, disinfect your hands, line up (when facing the altar) with Ministers of the Cup on the left side and Ministers of the Host on the right and process down the aisle to the front of the altar. Wait for everyone to line up in a row before the Altar, bow, then proceed to the sanctuary 6 to the left and 5 to the right and stand in a row behind the line. If the person who has Celiac or is gluten intolerant is scheduled to serve, they will be the last person in either line, making sure they line up in the middle behind the priest. After the priest and Extraordinary Minister at the Altar receive Holy Communion they will distribute the Body of Christ and Blood of Christ to the Extraordinary Ministers. If the Deacon is present, the Extraordinary Minister at the Altar does not need to serve. The minister distributing low gluten shall receive the Body of Christ from the priest on the tongue only. Ministers are to step forward to receive the Ciborium from the priest and Chalice from the Extraordinary Minister at the Altar. The last minister to receive the cup will offer it to the next minister on his left until all ministers have received. Once this is completed they will go down to their assigned places and offer the Sacred Species to the people. The person serving low gluten stands in the middle, a little further back, between the priest and the Extraordinary Minister at the Altar. See diagram on page 5 for position of Extraordinary Ministers.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Guidelines Page 5 of 7 Holy Communion for the 11:00 a.m. Mass Holy Communion for the 7:00 p.m. Mass For the distribution of the Precious Body, the Minister holds up the host and says to the communicant, "The Body of Christ." Wait for the communicant to respond with an "Amen. If the communicant fails to respond, silently say "Amen" for them. Do not alter the words. Place the host reverently in the person's hands or on the tongue of the communicant. If you observe someone, particularly children, not consuming the host immediately, please say "please consume the Host" or some similar statement. For the distribution of the Precious Blood, each minister shall offer the cup saying, "The Blood of Christ." Wait for the communicant to respond with an "Amen". If the communicant fails to respond, silently say "Amen" for them. Do not alter the words. Pass the chalice to the communicant. When the person has received from the chalice, carefully take the chalice back. Wipe the rim of the cup with the purificator and give the chalice a quarter turn for the next communicant. If you are unsure about whether a child has received First Holy Communion, ask the parent if they have. NON-COMMUNICANTS APPROACHING FOR A BLESSING You may extend your hand over the adult s head only and say The Blessing of Christ. When a child approaches to receive the blessing, you may make a sign of the cross on their forehead and say your own blessing or that mentioned above.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Guidelines Page 6 of 7 If you serve the cup and a person comes to you without having received the Body of Christ, do not hesitate to offer the cup. If some people are unable to come to the front for Holy Communion because of illness or are wheelchair bound, please make sure that they are looked after. After all have received communion, the Ciborium will be returned to the altar and placed on the corporal. All Ministers of the Precious Body line up behind the altar and wait for all ministers to return. Ministers of the Cup (Chalice) will come to the altar and facing the parishioners, consume the remaining Precious Blood or offer it to another minister, and place the chalice with purificator on the altar. Once everyone has completed, go down the left and right side and come together in front of the altar, bow, process down the middle aisle and return to your seats. The Sacristan or the priest will clean the vessels after Mass. The Extraordinary Minister at the Altar will take the Precious Body to the tabernacle, and genuflect before locking and closing the door. Leave the key in the tabernacle to be taken care of by the priest or sacristan unless the Deacon is present. In case a visiting priest celebrates Mass, he shall be informed of the procedures of communion by the parish priest. SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES Should a host fall to the ground, you may let the communicant retrieve the host and consume it. If they do not, you should retrieve it and place it in the hand that you are using to hold the ciborium or communion plate. When finished serving, return the ciborium to the altar and offer the dropped host to other Ministers of Communion or inform the priest about the situation and he will consume the host. If the Precious Blood is spilled, spread the purificator and place over the top of the spill to be wiped up after Mass. Ask the communicant to wait while you obtain a clean purificator and continue serving. These are delicate situations; if it is handled in an efficient manner, it will likely go unnoticed by others. If a person comes to you with a pyx and asks for a host, you will not comply, but in a friendly manner, invite him or her to speak to the priest after Mass. Intincture (dipping of precious body in the precious blood) if a person comes to you and intends to dip the host into the precious blood, you will advise them that this is forbidden to do according to instructions from the Bishop.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Guidelines Page 7 of 7 CONCLUSION The preceding pages of this handbook may be overly detailed to those who are active in the ministry for many years, but it serves both new and established Ministers to help create a more standard process. By striving for procedural consistency among Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, the assembly will feel more at ease, enabling them to be free from distractions and enter more deeply into the celebration. At times you will make mistakes in these procedures. What is most important is to maintain an attitude of reverence and worship towards the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and be warm and hospitable to members of the congregation.
