PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND Order of the Holy Sepulchre - Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy Spiritual Leader: Msgr. Jerry Sherba, KCHS Pilgrimage Coordinator: Jeannie Presley, KCHS... "The Gospel lllessage takes on a new immediacy and stronger color when one walks in the places where Jesus spoke and sees the landscapes that Jesus saw. In fact, the geography and local customs so influence some pages of the Bible that it is difficult to understand them without having seen this land"...

PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy of the United States Spiritual Leader: Msgr. Jerry Sherba, KCHS Pilgrimage Coordinator: Jeannie Presley, LCHS SUNDAY MARCH 2 - Depart from our home cities for our evening connecting flight overnight to Tel Aviv. Dinner and breakfast served aboard. D (dinner) & B (breakfast) MONDAY, MARCH 3 - Arrival at Ben Gurion Airport late afternoon. We clear customs and transfer by motor coach to the Notre Dame Center hotel in Jerusalem for check in. Our arrival Mass before dinner is in Notre Dame Chapel. D JERUSALEM TUESDAY, MARCH 4 - A short distance south of Jerusalem we enter Bethlehem. First we visit the Franciscan Church of St. Catherine, scene of Bethlehem's Midnight Mass. There we enter the Grotto of St. Jerome. We go into the adjacent Church of the Nativity to venerate the place of Our Savior's Birth, the Holy Grotto of the Nativity. Our next stop nearby will be in the Milk Grotto, a place of special devotion honoring Our Lady's Motherhood. A special experience will be a visit to Bethlehem University, which is staffed by Christian Brothers and where we will meet students and faculty. This University enriches the lives of the young people of Palestine by providing higher education to both Christians and Moslems. Our lunch will be provided by their hotel management department. In the countryside close by we will celebrate HOLY MASS in a GROTTO OF SHEPHERDS FIELDS. There we remember the angels' glad tidings to the shepherds. We also will stop at a Bethlehem store that offers olive wood religious carvings and many other items. Late afternoon in Jerusalem we enter the Old City to reach the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to make our SOLEMN ENTRY INTO THE TOMB OF JESUS. B, L (lunch) & D JERUSALEM WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5 - This morning we drive to the Summit of Mt. Olives to visist the Chapel of the Ascension and the Church of Pater Noster. Walking the Palm Sunday Road, we visit and celebrate MASS IN DOMINUS FLEVIT CHURCH. We have a wonderful panoramic view of the City of Jerusalem. We descend Mt. Olives and enter the Garden of Gethsemane. This afternoon we enter the Old City of Jerusalem at St. Stephen's Gate. Our first stop is the Church of St. Anne and the Poolsof Bethesda. Next we visit the Chapel of Flagellation in preparation for making the Way of the Cross. Carrying a wooden cross and praying the Way of the Cross along the streets and among the markets and shops asjesus did on Hisjourney to Calvary, we follow the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Within the church we visit Golgotha and complete our devotions at the sacred Tomb of Jesus. B & D JERUSALEM THURSDAY, MARCH 6 - Early this morning we celebrate MASS AT THE TOMB OF JESUS in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre with the Franciscans chanting the common hymns. After breakfast we go within the Old City to the Latin Rite Patriarchate, the Cathedral and Residence of the Catholic Bishop whose title is Patriarch of Jerusalem. We are received in audience. Those pilgrims in our group who are members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre will received their Pilgrim Shells. The latter part of the morning is free for our own activities. This afternoon we drive to a town just outside Jerusalem called Ein Karem. The Blessed Mother went in haste here to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Our devotions will be within the Church of the Visitation and the Church of St. John the Baptist, and we will praise God with the Magnificat. After dinner we return to the Garden of Gethsemane and enter the Rock of Agony Church for a Holy Hour from 8:30 to 9:30 PM with the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. B & D JERUSALEM FRIDAY, MARCH 7 - Our day begins at the Western Wall or Wailing Wall, where devout Jews offer up prayers at these remaining holy stones of the glorious second temple. We are aware that now the only structures standing on the Temple Mount

are the Moslem Shrines of the Dome of the Rock and Mosque el Aqsa. Next near Zion Gate we go to the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu, built over the spot where Our Lord was held in the dungeon of Caiphas' house. We celebrate MASS IN ST. PETER IN GALLICANTU. After Mass we visit the nearby traditional site of the Upper Room, recalling the Last Supper, Easter Sunday appearance of Our Lord and Pentecost Sunday. We can see the traditional Tomb of King David, as well as Dormition Abbey Church that honors the passage of Our Lady from this life to Heaven. We have several hours for our own pursuits this afternoon. This evening we go out for a special Farewell to Jerusalem dinner. B & D JERUSALEM SATURDAY, MARCH 8 - Driving east from Jerusalem we go down along the Dead Sea, lowest spot on the earth. The Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea, and at its banks a little to the north of the Dead Sea we stop at a site that commemorates the scene of St. John's Baptism of the Lord. Here we renew our own Baptismal Promises. Nearby we drive into Jericho, the most ancient city in the Holy Land. We can recall its prominence for events in both the Old and New Testaments. At the parish church there served by the Franciscans we celebrate HOLY MASS. Then we ascend by cable car to the top of Mt. Temptation for a Middle Eastern lunch, which is included. Next we go to the shore of the Dead Sea, where some may take the opportunity to swim in its mineral rich waters. We then drive north through the fertile Jordan River Valley, reaching the Sea of Galilee, where we check in at our hotel in Tiberias. B, L & D TIBERIAS SUNDAY, MARCH 9 - Just a short drive north we go up a hill called Mount Beatitudes, overlooking the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus preached His Sermon on the Mount. In this beautiful setting we celebrate HOLY MASS ON MT. BEATITUDES. Our drive to the east shore takes us to Kursi, where Jesus drove the demons out of the afflicted man and into a herd of swine. Late morning we reach Nazareth, where Jesus spent most of His Life. First we stop at Holy Family Restaurant, where lunch will be provided. Then we go to the magnificent Basilica of the Annunciation, built over the house where the Angel Gabriel came to the Virgin Mary. In its Grotto of the Annunciation we will venerate the very place where the Word Was Made Flesh. Then we visit the nearby church of St. Joseph's Workshop. B, L & D TIBERIAS MONDAY, MARCH 10 - This morning we drive north to reach CaesareaPhilippi, where Peter proclaimed his faith in Jesus as "Christ, Son of the Living God." Our Lord in response promised Peter the Keys to the Kingdom in his leadership role as Vicar of Christ on earth. Later along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, we stop at the Church of the Primacy of Peter, the place where Our Lord bestowed upon Peter the role of leadership of the Church. Here we will pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. Nearby also at the lake shore we visit the site of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes. Our lunch included today will feature St. Peter fish, a local specialty. We go to Capernaum, known as the Second City of Jesus, where we will see the ruins of the second century Synagogue (John: 6), and the ancient structure of the House of Peter. Here late afternoon we celebrate HOLY MASS IN CAPERNAUM. B, L & D TIBERIAS TUESDAY, MARCH 11 - This morning we ascend the heights of Mt. Tabor, where Jesus took Peter, James and John and was gloriously Transfigured in their sight. We celebrate HOLY MASS IN THE BASILICA OF THE TRANSFIGURATION. Coming back to the Sea of Galilee we embark on a boat ride, remembering the scripture passagesof Jesus and His apostles on this lake. At the place where we disembark there is a museum that houses a fishing boat that was discovered buried at the bottom of the lake. It is 2000 years old and very typical of the boats used by the Apostles who had been fishermen. A short distance from the north shore of the lake we reach Bethsaida. Several of the apostles were called from this town to follow Our Lord. B & D TIBERIAS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12 - We depart from Tiberias, driving west to Cana. Here we recall the scene of Our Lord's first miracle, remembering His Blessed Mother's words, "Do whatever He tells you." Here couples will have the opportunity to renew their marriage vows. Next we drive to Haifa, reaching the summit above at Mt. Carmel, which overlooks the Mediterranean. There we enter Stella Maris, the largest monastery of the Carmelite Order and its headquarters, and we see the Cave of

Elijah. We will celebrate HOLY MASS at the altar of OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL. There is time for lunch in Haifa. Driving south, our next stop is Caesarea, capitol of the Roman Province of Judea. We recall that St. Paul was imprisoned in Caesareabefore being sent to Rome. Also in this city St. Peter baptized the first Gentile converts. We will see the Crusaders' Moat and fortifications built by St. louis the King. We will also see the well-preserved Roman Amphitheater. Early this evening we are in the historic city of Jaffa. This port of ancient Israel was the point of embarkation for St. Paul on his missionary journeys. We dine together in Jaffa, and then head to the airport for our flight home. B & D BEN GURION AIRPORT THURSDAY, MARCH 13 - Shortly before midnight our flight departs for the U.S., where we go through Customs and connect to our flight to our home city, arriving home this same day.
