A Letter frm yur Senir Pastr Dear Members and Friends f Trinity Lutheran Church, Guard the gd treasure entrusted t yu, with the help f the Hly Spirit living in us 2 Timthy 1:14 We are living stries that speak f a gracius and lving Gd wh celebrates with us, in the here and nw, ur jys. We are living witnesses wh speak f an adventurus Gd a Gd wh makes us living treasures as partakers in the Christian witness. Human beings have tld stries frm time immemrial and, frm the very beginning, these stries have been crafted and tld arund campfires, at bedtime, in places f wrship and anywhere peple gather. Many stries draw us int feats f wanderings and new adventures. Other stries speak t the human needs f lve and relatinships. Children, especially, seem t lve stries that carry them alng n the quest t discver treasures f untld riches. As Christians we, t, are a part f this strytelling traditin. Frm the early pages f the Old Testament, n int the prclamatin f the New Testament, Christians repeat theses stries acrss the wrld in every language. We bring t ur children and ur children s children the stries f Nah, Abraham and Sarah. We share with them the stries f Jesus miracles and the turning f five laves and tw fish int a feast that ges n t feed a multitude f thers. We create wrd pictures and paintings that depict the life and times f the early apstles. Hwever, as Christians, we als realize that these are nt just wnderful bedtime stries, r stries that are shared nly arund campfires r special ccasins, these stries, thrughut time, have becme ur stry. We are living stries that speak f a gracius and lving Gd wh celebrates with us, in the here in nw, ur jys. We are living stries f a cmpassinate and lving Savir wh mves heaven and earth t partake in ur srrw and ur suffering. We are nt merely strytellers wh are sharing things that have happened, we are living wrds f a stry that ges back t the time f creatin when Gd spke the heavens int rbit and breathed life int the dirt f the grund. We are living witnesses wh speak f an adventurus Gd. A Gd wh can cry and weep ver lve fund and lve lst. A Gd wh makes us living treasures as partakers in the Christian witness. At the beginning f the Apstle Paul s secnd letter t the disciple Timthy, Paul writes wrds t Timthy t make him aware that the witness he shares is a living stry f faith and redemptin. 2 Timthy 1:14 reads, Guard the gd treasure entrusted t yu, with the help f the Hly Spirits living in us. (NRSV) Visin 2020 3 A Rich Histry A Prmising Future

I find these wrds t be wrds f cmfrt and challenge as we, the cngregatin f Trinity English Lutheran cntinue t cast visins and dream dreams alng with the pwer f the Hly Spirit. the same Spirit that was present in guidance with Paul and Timthy is the same Spirit that guides and instructs us as a peple f faith. Wrds f cmfrt in a Rich Histry: I find cmfrt in these wrds because the same Spirit that was present in guidance with Paul and Timthy is the same Spirit that guides and instructs us as a peple f faith. Fr this we shuld give Gd thanks and praise! This is the rich histry f ur shared faith and ne that is part f ur spiritual DNA. Wrds f challenge fr a Prmising Future: These are wrds f challenge, hwever, as we cntinue t prclaim a stry f faith and guidance that has been lst t many in ur ever changing and cmplicated wrld. What des it mean t guard these treasures? What des it mean t fulfill this calling int a prmising future? Thrughut the past year, a cmmitted grup f members has gathered t cnsider this Lng Range Plan. The theme we have gathered and prayed under is the title f this Lng Range Plan, Visin 2020: A Rich Histry A Prmising Future. Each time we have gathered we have prayerfully cnsidered the treasures that have been entrusted t us. This theme has perated as mre than a phrase r a rally cry it has, in many ways, becme the awareness f the treasures f the nging stry that weaves the blessings f the past with ur present and future ministry. S, what are sme f these treasures? The treasures we have in yu, as a peple f faith are bundless. Yur energy and enthusiasm cntagius. The Gspel f Jesus Christ Mst imprtantly are the treasures we receive thrugh the rich histry and prclamatin f the Gspel message. As a peple f faith we dive int these stries and nt merely wade amng the shallws. The prclamatins we discver in ur Biblical studies and Christ-centered cnversatins and wrship are a part f ur daily walks f faith as individuals, as families and as a cmmunity f believers. At the heart f ur wrship and prclamatin is that we are, in the wrds f Martin Luther, simultaneusly saint and sinner. In recgnitin f this prclamatin we discver again and again that in ur failings there is frgiveness; in darkness and grief, there is hpe; in ur jys and celebratins, there is glry. The Peple f Trinity English Lutheran Church Yes! YOU! Visin 2020 A Rich Histry A Prmising Future 4

[yu are] living testimnies t what it means t be part f this shared stry f redemptin, grace and lve. Since ur beginnings in 1901, the peple f this cngregatin have been cmmitted and challenged t pnder anew what the shared stry f faith can mean t the cmmunity we serve. I wish there was a way t travel back t the time f ur first wrship services. Hw ludly they must have sung in prclamatin! Hw dedicated they must have been t stretch bundaries and find new beginnings! Hw greatly they must have relied n each ther during times f depressin and anxiety! Hw fervently they must have prayed! And s d yu! The treasures we have in yu, as a peple f faith, are bundless. Yur energy and enthusiasm is cntagius. Yur prayers and yur vices are essential t this living stry we are all a part f. Yu are a peple wh are a treasure wh have been richly blessed - and yu use yur gifts in a multitude f ways in this cngregatin, cmmunity, in yur places f wrk and schling, and in yur hmes. Thank yu! Visin 2020: A Rich Histry A Prmising Future As yu read and cnsider the visin captured here in this dcument, it is ur prayer that we will als cnsider the rich treasures that have been entrusted t us. These treasures are nt meant t be hidden away but, rather, these treasures are invited t becme a part f this living stry f resurrectin, faith and hpe first given t us thrugh ur Savir, Jesus Christ. We are a peple f stry. We are a peple with a Rich Histry and a Prmising Future. In clsing, I wish t thank the cmmitted staff, members f the 2020 Visin Task Frce, and all f yu fr yur cntinued cmmitment, supprt and engagement as living testimnies t what it means t be a part f this shared stry f redemptin, grace and lve. Sli De Glria! T Gd alne be the Glry! Lauren J. Wrightsman Senir Pastr Visin 2020 A Rich Histry A Prmising Future 5

Cngregatinal Summary Dale Fredell, Lng Range Planning Task Frce, Chair Trinity Lutheran s Visin Statement: Trinity views the stry f Jesus Christ as life-changing Gd News that simply must be tld t all. Trinity Lutheran s Missin Statement: CALLED by Gd t WITNESS in the name f Jesus Christ; MOVED by the pwer f the Hly Spirit t REACH OUT t a cmmunity in need The Lng Range Planning cmmittee began its wrk in January 2015 and, as chartered by the Church Cuncil, its task was t prvide visin, pririties and guidance fr the next five years. In the wrds f Pastr Lauren Wrightsman, Our histry will carry us thrugh t a new and exciting, yet unknwn, future and that rich histry is what prpels us, the cngregatin f Trinity Lutheran, int the future. A future where Gd is casting the visin f which we are t be and wh we are t becme. Thus, Visin 2020: A Rich Histry - A Prmising Future was begun. Included in this reprt is: v an verview f TLC s histry v the Map fr Actin v ur Three Cre Strengths v the Lng Range Plan gals including detailed actin items, timing and identified leading grups/leader fr each item v an appendix that includes lcal and church demgraphics and ther reprts/data used t discern the directin fr plan. In additin, we identify recmmendatins and gals fr maintaining, enhancing and grwing ur facility s that it meets the size and prgram requirements f tday as well as in the year 2020. While Visin 2020 is a dcument f guiding gals, withut the prayers and supprt f ur members, it will be merely a dcument rather than the radmap t ur future that Gd has set upn us. Ultimately, we believe we must build n ur cre strengths, which have been further expanded and defined, s that ur Visin becmes a reality. By fcusing n these strengths, we will achieve ur visin and missin. Visin 2020 A Rich Histry A Prmising Future 6

Visin 2020 A Rich Histry A Prmising Future 9

Rad Map f Lng Range Planning Task Frce Visin 2020: Our Map fr Actin The Lng Range Planning Task Frce began wrk in January 2015. As the cmmittee determined the steps needed t cmplete the task, a key pririty fr the grup was cmmunicatin. Frm the beginning a high pririty was placed upn keeping the cngregatin invlved. As a result there were mnthly articles in the Chimes, mnthly temple talks t the cngregatin, mnthly updates at cuncil, and Visin 2020 banners t create awareness. In rder t fulfill the charter assigned by the cuncil, the cmmittee determined there were five key steps we needed t accmplish as utlined belw : Define Visin: In January the cmmittee reviewed: v the 2010 Lng Range Plan v the Staffing Task Frce Plan f 2009 v the Building Needs Task Frce Plan f 2009 v the 2014 Annual Reprt v the 2014 Cngregatinal Summer Feedback sessin ntes. Frm this data and in-depth discussins regarding Trinity s histry and ur dreams fr the future we cncluded that ur Lng Range Plan must be tied t bth Trinity s Visin and Missin and build upn ur strengths. The Lng Range Plan: Visin 2020: A Rich Histry A Prmising Future, must fcus n cre strengths f: v Educatin v Faith Life v Outreach Define Pririties: The cmmittee presented the visin t the cuncil and received their supprt t cntinue. With thse three key areas in mind, the cmmittee reviewed the actin items in the 2010 Lng Range Plan in detail, and identified items that wuld be carried frward. In additin data related t the lcal area including church demgraphics was reviewed. Gather Feedback: During this phase the cmmittee met with lcal cmmunity leaders regarding the needs f ur cmmunity and hw Trinity culd be a supprtive partner in these areas. The cmmittee als met with a cnsultant t determine if additinal utside resurces were necessary, and determined that they were nt. The cmmittee presented the visin f the Lng Range Plan t the cngregatin fllwing Sunday services fr additinal feedback. Visin 2020 A Rich Histry A Prmising Future 10

Re-Priritize Based upn Feedback: Once the cmmittee had identified the specific key pririties fr the next five years, this infrmatin was shared with staff fr feedback and insight. Then, with the assistance f staff, the Lng Range Plan pririties were shared with cuncil and staff t gather additinal input. Cmmunicate: The updated and final reprt was apprved by cuncil in August 2015. The plan will be shared with the cngregatin at Questin and Answer sessins. The plan will be frequently referred t and updated thrughut the next five years., t be shared with the cngregatin. Visin 2020 A Rich Histry A Prmising Future 11

LRP Results and Recmmendatins A Rich Histry: Fr ver 114 years this cngregatin has faithfully served the peple f this area. As the area grew, s t did the cngregatin. Generatins upn generatins adapted t the changes f the wrld arund them while keeping the Gspel message intact. This message f lve and frgiveness, hpe and mercy has cntinued t prpel us frward. A Prmising Future: S, t, will this Gspel prclamatin prpel ur future frward, and ministry t all peple yung, middle-aged, elderly, individuals and families cntinues t be a majr fcus f ur shared ministry. Teaching, preaching and prclaiming the wrd f Jesus Christ must cntinue t be at the center f Trinity and her ministry. What fllws are the cre strengths that we, as a cngregatin, are called t build upn in ur visin fr the year 2020. As Visin 2020 is laid ut in this dcument yu will see the fllwing: v A celebratin f the multitude f treasures we have been gifted with in the cre strength areas v Areas f grwth in all areas that speak t ur needs as a grwing cmmunity f faith v A time line f actin items v A listing f the staff and cmmittees wh are respnsible fr the actin items and any fllw up and evaluatin Visin 2020 A Rich Histry A Prmising Future 13

Facilities Evaluatin Jesus said, "Therefre everyne wh hears these wrds f mine and acts n them, may be cmpared t a wise man wh built his huse n the rck. And the rain fell, and the flds came, and the winds blew and slammed against that huse; and yet it did nt fall, fr it had been funded n the rck. Everyne wh hears these wrds f mine and des nt act n them, will be like a flish man wh built his huse n the sand. Matthew 7:24-27 Facility Overview Trinity Lutheran Church was riginally built in 1902. In 1958 a large ffice and educatin area was added t the nrthwest side f the sanctuary. In 1978 the additin f a new Fellwship Hall and Sunday Schl facility was extended t the west and suth f the ffices. In 1992 a remdel and expansin t facility was cmpleted alng with the additin f the Kirvida Lunge n the suth side. In 2003 the expansin f the Main Entrance, Narthex and ther minr updates were cmpleted. Over the last 113 years the facility has been well maintained. The challenge we face tday is that sme f the majr systems within ur facility, such as HVAC, electrical and the flat rf have exceeded their useful life and significant repair r replacement expenses culd ccur. In additin, ur facility des nt meet the American Disability Act (ADA) requirements pertaining t accessibility (restrms and dr hardware) fr persns f limited mbility. Finally, as a grwing cngregatin cmmitted t educatinal and utreach prgrams and the recmmendatins f the Lng Range Planning Task Frce, we are stretching the limits f ur current facility. Our initial methdlgy establishing ur recmmendatin began with individual prjects based upn the understanding that any investment in ur facility will be a nticeable imprvement. But as the Lng Range Planning Task Frce deliberated and wrestled thrugh ur recmmendatins, a pattern began t frm. Fr example, ne recmmendatin t address a specific issue has a majr effect n ther facility issues and needs and will require crdinatin t achieve efficiency. This led us dwn a path f bundling all ur recmmendatins int ne verarching recmmendatin, that being a majr facility renvatin. That said, this cmmittee strngly recmmends establishing a Buildings Needs Task Frce (BNTF) cmmittee t determine and evaluate the mst sensible apprach t address ur facility needs nw and int the near future. Als, Appendix G is a physical needs survey and facility assessment f the building. finishes, mechanical and electrical systems, and life safety items. The assessment als includes replacement budgets, expected useful life and recmmended curse f actin fr the near future. Data gathered is viewed against current industry standard and general building practices. While the infrmatin is bth subjective and nn-subjective, the recmmendatins, csts, and timelines given are estimates. The end f this dcument summarizes the estimated csts. These budget amunts d nt include escalatin, design fees, r prject sft csts, hwever they are prfessinally estimated and as accurate as nted. Appendix A: Histrical Backgrund At the beginning f the 20 th century, there was n Lutheran church in Lindstrm, MN. The Swedish pineers traveled by hrseback, buggy r sleigh t Chisag Lake Lutheran Church in Center City t wrship and hear Gd's wrd preached in their native tngue. Their children learned the Swedish Catechism. Sme Lutherans were cncerned that yung peple were leaving the church fr English speaking cngregatins. On "Trinity Sunday," June 2, 1901, a grup f Lindstrm residents gathered in the Opera Hall (lcated n the present site f the Chisag Cunty Press) t hear the Rev. S.W. Kuhns preach in English. Five weeks later n July 11, 1901, Trinity Lutheran Church f Lindstrm was incrprated as part f the English Synd f the Nrthwest. It became the area's first English-speaking Lutheran cngregatin, cmprised f "fifteen grwn persns and eleven families." One year later, in August 1902, Trinity's crnerstne was laid under the guidance f the first full pastr, Rev. Frank E. Jensen. The new church, built withut a basement, cst $10,000 and was paid fr in seven years. The basement was dug and an eight-rm parsnage purchased seventeen years later. Ten pastrs served Trinity in her first 65 years. A new parsnage was built in 1955, and a parish educatin wing was added in 1958. Trinity, Zin, and Chisag Lake Lutheran churches shared their first yuth directr in 1974. By 1976, with Rev. Gerge Cruys as its 11 th pastr, Trinity had grwn t 756 active members. T deal with the vercrwding, Trinity cnsidered several ptins, including building a new church n the edge f twn. The cngregatin vted t stay in the heart f Lindstrm, and n Nvember 2, 1978, Trinity brke grund fr a fellwship hall additin and dubled the church's size. On Octber 14, 1990, the cngregatin apprved a renvatin plan t expand the sanctuary, adding 3,000 square feet and 170 seats t the wrship area, including rgan renvatin. The remdeled and expanded church was dedicated in 1993. The Kirvida Memrial Lunge was dnated by Jean Kirvida and family in memry f Mitchell Kirvida in 1992. In 2002, lightning struck Trinity's steeple. Luckily, the fire didn't damage the stained glass, the seven styles f riginal tin wall-sheeting, r the sanctuary. In planning t rebuild the fire-damaged narthex, it was determined that the area shuld be expanded fr greater ease f wrshipers n Sunday mrnings and special events. At the same time, a restratin f the Newell Avenue entrance was created t resemble the riginal facade f the 1902 church. An elevatr was added at that time.
