TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CALL UPON THE LORD The very first line of today's first reading summons us to seek the Lord and to call upon God. This sentiment is echoed in the refrain for today's responsorial psalm: "The Lord is near to all who call upon him" (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of someone who constantly sought the Lord. In the excerpt we read today from his letter to the Philippians, we find Saint Paul toward the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant with Christ. He writes, "For to me, life is Christ" (Philippians 1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord with Christ, we need look no further than today's Gospel. There, we find that God's love and mercy are immeasurable for all those who seek and call upon the Lord. TODAY'S READINGS First Reading Turn to the Lord, who is generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:6-9). Psalm The Lord is near to all who call upon Him (Psalm 145). Second Reading Live your lives in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ (Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a). Gospel The last will be first, and the first will be last (Matthew 20:1-16a). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. ST. CATHARINE S PARISH 8 DAY PILGRIMAGE LED BY MSGR. McAREE TO ROME, VATICAN CITY & ASSISI APRIL 16-23, 2018 ENROLLMENT DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 10 th You, your relatives and friends are invited to join us on our Pilgrimage to Italy s greatest cities and special places dear to everyone s heart. Monsignor McAree has worked with Peter s Way Tours to come up with a wonderful trip. While in Rome, this Pilgrimage will take us to the sacred sites of our Catholic faith, including the Sistine Chapel, the Basilicas of Christian Rome and the Catacombs. We will also take in the historic venues of ancient Rome, including the Roman Forum and the area around the Coliseum. We will celebrate daily Mass and also have the exciting opportunity to attend the Holy Father s general audience! You will see, walk, and pray at the same locations where St. Francis, St. Clare and many others before us came closer to God. Visiting Assisi rounds out what promises to be an enriching and unforgettable experience. Best of all, we will be celebrating our faith, forming deeper bonds of friendship, and enjoying the food and customs of other cultures! There is nothing like sharing such experiences with friends and family in faith. This will be a truly memorial journey for all in the year 2018, as we celebrate 150 years of sharing in our fruitful parish life. Peter s Way has over 30 years as the Leader of Worldwide Pilgrimages. The Peter s Way family is a network of travel professionals, artistic directors, spiritual leaders and educational experts who transform ordinary tours into extraordinary life changing sacred experiences. The All-Inclusive Package Price, per person, sharing a twin room is $3,390 (includes round-trip airfare from New York, estimated departure taxes and fuel surcharge). The enrollment deadline with $350 deposit, is October 10, 2017. Please stop by the Rectory for a Brochure. TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Today s Second Collection will help offset our Archdiocesan assessment for the support of the Catholic School System in New York. Thank you for your support. NEXT SUNDAY S SECOND COLLECTION ST. JOSEPH S SEMINARY St. Joseph s Seminary and College in Dunwoodie, New York, was founded in 1896, and is the major seminary of the Archdiocese of New York. Its primary mission is to serve the Church by educating men for the Catholic priesthood as living images of Jesus Christ.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL THE FATHER OF THE POOR FEAST DAY SEPTEMBER 27 When you put a donation into the Poor Box in the lobby of our Church, you are contributing to our St. Vincent de Paul, Good Samaritan Society. But, do you know who St. Vincent de Paul is? Here, follows, a brief biography. St. Vincent de Paul was born to a poor peasant family in the French village of Pouy on April 24, 1581. His first formal education was provided by the Franciscans. After studying theology at the University of Toulous, he was ordained in 1600. St. Vincent went to Avignon and later to Rome to continue his studies. While there, he became a chaplain to the Count of Goigny and was placed in charge of distributing money to the deserving poor. From that point forward, he spent his life preaching missions to and providing relief to the poor. St. Vincent even established hospitals for them. This work became his passion. He later extended his concern and ministry to convicts. The need to evangelize and assist these souls was so great and the demands beyond his own ability to meet that he founded the Ladies of Charity, a lay institute of women to help, as well as, a religious institute of priests the Congregation of Priests of the Mission, commonly referred to now as the Vincentians. The Vincentians remain with us today with nearly 4,000 members in 86 countries. In addition to his order of Vincentian priests, St. Vincent cofounded the Daughters of Charity, along with St. Louise de Marillac. There are more than 18,000 Daughters today serving the needs of the poor in 94 countries. St. Vincent was eighty years old when he died in Paris on September 27, 1660. He has been referred to as, The Apostle of Charity and The Father of the Poor. The goal of our St. Vincent de Paul, Good Samaritan Society is to provide support for members of our community in the form of short term financial assistance, distribution of food and gift cards at the holidays, and assistance in locating help from other agencies such as Catholic Community Services and local food pantries. If you are in need of assistance, please contact Monsignor McAree. If God is the center of your life, no words are necessary. Your mere presence will touch hearts. Put your trust in Him and, following His example, always act humbly, graciously, and in good faith. St. Vincent de Paul VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION MASS & RECEPTION NEXT SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, 12:30 PM If you are a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Usher, Altar Server, member of the Altar Society, the Prayer Shawl Ministry, the Choir, the Parish Council, a PREP Catechist, CYO Coach, or any of our other wonderful volunteers, you are invited to a Special Mass next Sunday, October 1 at 12:30 PM. A reception will follow in the school s gym. ROCKLAND COUNTY BLUE MASS NEXT SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, 12:00 NOON HOSTED BY ST. AEDAN CHURCH A Blue Mass is a special celebration which the Catholic Church offers for those employed in the public safety field (Police Officers, Firefighters, Correctional Officers, 911 Operators, EMS Personnel).
