Project Synopsis Description Help build a water system to supply the daily needs of 97 families in two poor, rural villages. Purpose To quench thirst, protect families from waterborne illness, and pour out the love of Christ. Location Carrera Verde and a neighboring batey (sugar cane cutter village) just east of the Haitian border in the Dominican Republic, in the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana. Cost $60,500 fully funds the first year of a two-year project to construct a gravity-fed water system benefiting 97 needy families. Highlights The rural village of Carrera Verde and the neighboring batey have no reliable water source for the nearly 500 residents. Without safe water, children are at high risk of gastrointestinal illness and skin disease. FUNDASEP, a rural outreach of the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana, has a two-year plan to install a communitywide water system supplying the needs of 97 families. Similar water systems have been successfully implemented in other rural villages by FUNDASEP through Cross Catholic Outreach funding. Your gift is needed to fund the first year of the project, which includes purchasing materials, constructing a 25,000-gallon holding tank, training workers to dig trenches, and preparing the community to maintain the system. This permanent solution to the community s water needs will send a powerful message of God s love for the poor. 1
The Need: Desperate for Clean Water Every morning, women and children from the remote Dominican village of Carrera Verde gamble with their lives. Plastic jugs in hand, they walk as far as two-and-a-half miles to the El Batey Creek to fetch water contaminated with human and animal waste. The thought of drinking water containing fecal matter and other particulates pulled in from the banks of the creek is nauseating, but it is their only practical alternative. The next nearest water source a makeshift well is farther still and may or may not be functional that day. Even if that well is pumping water, the families fill their jugs knowingly exposing themselves to parasites that could tear up their stomachs and, ironically, cause severe dehydration. Young children are most vulnerable since they have yet to develop any natural resistance to the onslaught of toxins. This isolated corner of the Dominican countryside The Facts 465 people live in Carrera Verde and the neighboring batey. 3 out of every 10 families are Haitian and don t speak Spanish. The typical villager lives in a dirt-floor shanty, has little to no education, and earns barely enough to survive. Water access is limited to a contaminated creek and unreliable wells. sits nearby the Haitian border and is accessible only by a dirt road. Many of its families are Haitian immigrants who don t speak Spanish and earn a pittance working the fields. As a result, the people languish in deplorable living conditions, in makeshift houses with dirt floors, no running water and few earthly possessions. Carrera Verde s water struggles are symptomatic of the poor infrastructure affecting many rural Dominican communities. But now, the people s cries have been heard. The local Catholic diocese has a plan to bring clean, abundant water to the lips of the needy, and it is counting on your help to succeed! 2
Ministry Description After years of hoping and praying, the villagers of Carrera Verde have finally reached the beginning of the end to their water crisis. FUNDASEP, a rural outreach of the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana, has seen their desperate need and responded with a commitment to install a communitywide system supplying fresh, abundant water to multiple access points. The dream of clean water is becoming a reality! But to succeed in this lifesaving effort, FUNDASEP needs your help! Your gift through Cross Catholic Outreach will fund the first year of a two-year effort to install a gravity-fed water system that will pump a daily supply of filtered, drinkable water sufficient for the needs of all 97 families. With your help, FUNDASEP will purchase materials, construct a 25,000-gallon holding tank, train workers to dig trenches for laying pipe, and prepare the community to maintain the system in good working order. Once completed, the water system will have a dramatic impact on these poor families lives. Small children, the sick and the elderly will no longer risk death when quenching their thirst. Gastrointestinal and skin diseases will decline. Women and children will no longer have to walk miles to fetch water. And families who once struggled to fill a jug will have enough water not only for drinking, but also for cooking, cleaning, bathing and even gardening. Instead of spending much of the day carrying heavy water jugs on their backs, mothers will be able to dedicate their time to planting vegetable gardens and irrigating their crops. As a result, their children will have enough to eat and drink. Through the gift of water, the local Catholic diocese is reaching poor Dominican families and forging relationships of compassion. This new water system will be a permanent monument to Christ s love for the weak and vulnerable, and to the generosity of friends like you. Give today, and be the answer to the prayers of the poor! Our Ministry Partner: FUNDASEP, an outreach organization formed by the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana, serves people in the less-developed Southwest area of the Dominican Republic, namely the provinces of Azua, San Juan and Elias Piña. This area of nearly 4,800 square miles is home to almost 600,000 people. FUNDASEP was formed in 1992, and its mission is to encourage development through social, economic, agricultural, educational, cultural, and forestation programs and projects. Cross Catholic Outreach has partnered with FUNDASEP and the Diocese of San Juan on several successful outreach projects for the poor, working closely with the bishop, Most Rev. Jose Grullon Estrella. Give Now! Jesus said, Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, Out of the believer s heart shall flow rivers of living water (John 7:37-38, NIV). Today, you can open the floodgates of God s living water by partnering with Cross Catholic Outreach to construct a clean water system in Carrera Verde. Please let Christ s mercy overflow from your heart to these impoverished Dominican families and Haitian immigrants who are in such desperate need. Your generous gift will fund the first year of this two-year project, bringing the villagers closer to realizing their dream of clean water. With your support, lives will be saved and FUNDASEP will deliver a message of compassion and hope amid the cruel circumstances of rural Dominican poverty. Let s join together right now and shower these suffering families with health, dignity, prosperity, relief from thirst and hope for a better tomorrow! They will be so grateful you gave! Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. Luke 6:38 Our Promise to You! Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures for this project incurred during the current calendar year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry. 5 [tm1509] 2700 N.
