nd Sunday of Lent 1 The Communion Assistant parts are printed in red along with instructions for movement. Gathering Pastor s Greeting In the Name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit! Amen Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. God of heaven and earth, you come in close and make us yours. Equip us by your Spirit to confess our sin, embrace your forgiveness, and seek the way you set before us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. With honesty of heart, let us confess our sin. The assembly may kneel or stand. An extended silence may be kept. Merciful God, forgive us. Our will is handcuffed to sin, and we cannot break free. We have spoken when we should have kept quiet. Silence. We were silent when we should have said something. Silence. We acted when we knew better. Silence. We were still when we know we should have moved. Silence.

For the wrong we have done, for the good we have failed to do, have mercy on us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. People of God, look to the + Son, given to heal you and set you free because God loved the world so much. Take hold of life eternal life! Gathering Hymn O God of Mercy, God of Light ELW # 714 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

The Prayer of the Day Let us pray! Holy God, heavenly Father, in the waters of the flood you saved the chosen, and in the wilderness of temptation you protected your Son from sino God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful death to be for us the means of life. Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit The First Reading The reading is announced: A reading from the book of 1 Chronicles 28:9-21 9 And you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve him with single mind and willing heart; for the LORD searches every mind, and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will abandon you forever. 10 Take heed now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary; be strong, and act." 11 Then David gave his son Solomon the plan of the vestibule of the temple, and of its houses, its treasuries, its upper rooms, and its inner chambers, and of the room for the mercy seat; 12 and the plan of all that he had in mind: for the courts of the house of the LORD, all the surrounding chambers, the treasuries of the house of God, and the treasuries for dedicated gifts; 13 for the divisions of the priests and of the Levites, and all the work of the service in the house of the LORD; for all the vessels for the service in the house of the LORD, 14 the weight of gold for all golden vessels for each service, the weight of silver vessels for each service, 15 the weight of the golden lampstands and their lamps, the weight of gold for each lampstand and its lamps, the weight of silver for a lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each in the service, 16 the weight of gold for each table for the rows of bread, the silver for the silver tables, 17 and pure gold for the forks, the basins, and the cups; for the golden bowls and the weight of each; for the silver bowls and the weight of each; 18 for the altar of incense made of refined gold, and its weight; also his plan for the golden chariot of the cherubim that spread their wings and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD. 19 All this, in writing at the LORD's direction, he made clear to me the plan of all the works.

20 David said further to his son Solomon, "Be strong and of good courage, and act. Do not be afraid or dismayed; for the Lord GOD, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the LORD is finished. 21 Here are the divisions of the priests and the Levites for all the service of the house of God; and with you in all the work will be every volunteer who has skill for any kind of service; also the officers and all the people will be wholly at your command. The lesson concludes: The Word of God, word of life! Thanks be to God! Choir Anthem Create in Me a Clean Heart based on Psalm 51 The Second Reading The reading is announced: A reading from the book of Psalm 51:10-12, 17 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. 17 The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. The lesson concludes: The Word of God, word of life! Thanks be to God! The Gospel Acclamation Stand and sing Fill Me Now

The Holy Gospel according to John 6:1-14 Glory to you O Lord! 1 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?" 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, "Six months' wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people? 10 Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost." 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, "This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world." The reading concludes: The Gospel of the Lord! Praise to you, O Christ! Sermon Stand The Hymn of the Day Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart ELW #750

The prayers of the people are gathered by the pastor from the Prayer Corner and brought to the altar. Children s Sermon

Nicene Creed With the whole church let us confess our faith: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen The Prayers Renewed in the promises of baptism, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. A brief silence. We pray for the church. Make us bold to proclaim your love. Give us courage to carry the cross that confronts us each day and follow Christ. Strengthen pastors, bishops, deacons, and all who minister in your name. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for the world. For flowing streams and still waters. For urban parks and

wilderness reserves. For pastures and forests. Instill within us a reverence for the earth as your creation and our fragile home. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for the nations. Teach us to honor our common humanity within diversity. Turn enemies into friends. Lead us away from hatred, fear, and misunderstanding. Show our hearts the way to peace and fill us with compassion. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for those in need. For people whose struggles we fail to acknowledge. For those who leave their homes and families in search of safety or employment. For those who grieve, and for all who are ill. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for this assembly. For those who prepare this space for worship. For ministries of fellowship and hospitality. For those preparing for baptism or confirmation, and for all who provide care and support to those who are homebound. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The Exchange of Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always! And also with you! The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace and may say, Peace be with you Offering The Offering is received. As the gifts are presented, the congregation stands and sings As the Deer Offertory As the offering is received the Communion Assistant comes forward to the altar to receive the offering. During the singing of As the Deer the offering is placed by the Communion Assistant on the north side of the altar (facing away from the congregation). The Communion Assistant then takes their position behind the altar next to the presiding minister and the service continues. The Offertory Prayer Merciful God, receive the sacrifice of our praise and thanksgiving and the offering of our lives,

that following in the way of the cross, we may know the joy of the resurrection; through Christ our Lord. Meal The Great Thanksgiving The Institution Words of In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks + broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks + and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. The Lord s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father in heaven, holy be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, Invitation to Communion now and forever. Return to God with all your heart. Receive bread for the journey, drink for the desert. During the singing of Christ the Lamb, the Communion Assistant gives an empty tray for wine glasses to one acolyte, a full silver tray of grape juice to the second acolyte and takes a full gold tray of wine. The Communion Assistant and the acolyte follow the presiding minister to the nave to commune those who cannot come to the altar. Once these people have been served, the communion continues at the altar rail until all have been served. The presiding minister then serves the deacon and the acolyte. The Communion Assistant then communes the pastor and takes their seat in the front pew of the nave on the north side. Distribution of Communion We believe in the true presence of Christ in the bread and wine of Holy Communion. All baptized Christians who share this belief are welcomed to the Lord s Table today. If your child has not yet made their first communion, they may come forward for a blessing. The glasses in the silver trays are filled with juice and the glasses in the gold trays are filled with the wine. GLUTEN FREE wafers are available upon request. Please let your request be known to the pastor. During Communion We ask that you use the time of communion for prayer and silent meditation, respecting the needs of others for this holy silence. Post Communion Blessing after the distribution the congregation stands for the blessing The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen and preserve you in eternal life. Amen Prayer after Communion Compassionate God, you have fed us with the bread of heaven. Sustain us in our Lenten pilgrimage: may our fasting be hunger for justice, our alms, a making of peace, and our prayer, the song of grateful hearts; through Christ our Lord.

Sending The Benediction May God who has called us forth from the dust of the earth, and claimed us as children of the light, strengthen you on your journey into life renewed. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord s face shine upon you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you + peace. The Sending Hymn Now Rest Beneath Night s Shadow ELW #568

Announcements...then the final sending: Marked with the cross of Christ, go forth to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. The acolyte leads the recession to the narthex with the cross.
