July 30, 2017 XVII Sunday in Ordinary Time MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR P eople ask in confession about what kind of work is permitted on Sunday. Here is some background to help answer that question. You ll remember that the third commandment says: Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day. (Exodus 20:8-9) We keep that commandment by worshiping God at Mass and refraining from unnecessary work on Sunday. One way of explaining the Sabbath to children is to say that we should keep special things special. On Sunday we remember with sincere thanks the special things Jesus did for us. With His Resurrection He showed us that God s love is stronger that sin, fear and death. Participating at Mass and enjoying a restful day on Sunday keep Jesus special for us!! Fr. Galvon Work for the common good is permitted on Sundays. First responders, drugstore and medical workers etc provide important services to our society. If you are required to work on Sunday in retail or service industries, do your best to switch hours so you can have some or all of Sunday as a quiet time. The aim is to have our home and activities reflect, above all on Sunday, the peace, joy, contentment and love that should be ours because of what Jesus has done for us. Fr John Dietzen in Catholic Q & A writes: whatever obligations the church has asked us to observe on Sunday are meant as an aid to keep the spirit of reverent reflection, worship and rest. Vatican Council II calls Sunday the original feast day and urges that its observance should always be proposed and taught so that it may become in fact a day of joy and freedom from work. (Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy, 106) He also writes: the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Code of Canon Law (2185-2187) say the same the faithful should avoid any work or business which might stand in the way of the worship which should be given to God, the joy proper to the Lord s day or the needed relaxation of mind and body. (CCL 1247) Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for our needs. We pray for them in their needs Let them see You face to face in the breaking of the Eucharistic Bread. Amen. St. John Vianney, Patron of Priests... Pray for us! Feast Day, August 4 3
